Open Gameday Thread, 7/2
Chicago @ San Francisco
My hopes for the game:
- The Giants score ten runs.
- Kevin Correia goes seven strong innings.
- Sergio Romo pitches the eighth.
- Osiris Matos pitches the ninth.
I'm no logimagician, but I think this scenario breaks down right around point #1. A fella can dream, though.

How is Romo?
I heard on the Sabean show that he was a bit…excited…in his first appearance.

Dempster gave up 8 runs in his last start. Therefore, he will pitch a complete game shutout tonight. It’s just science.

We squeezed one out last night...
And Timmy’s starting tomorrow…
Sometime’s one just knows when the Giants are going to lose before the game even starts.
I’d bet a steak dinner on the Cubbies in this one…

This seems like a good year for relievers to become starters. Ryan Dempster, Justin Duchschererererreeer, and of course, our very own Jonathan Sanchez. I don’t really have anything insightful to say, just an interesting observation.

This seems like a good year
For people to have truly breakout seasons. I mean, I can’t remember a Baseball Season in which so many players came out of seemingly nowhere to become some of the best players in the game: Timmy, Volquez, Uggla, Fukudome, Duschererererere, etc. There’s a shitload of ‘em.

I wouldn’t say Fukudome is one of the best in the game. He’s pretty good not not spectacular. And we know he came from Japan. ;) But otherwise, I agree with you.

You're probably right...
Problem is, I know there are a shitload of other players that I could be using as examples, but can’t think of any of their names right now for some stupid reason…

Probably the last time so many players rose from obscurity to put up massive power numbers was, um – when did the steroid era begin?

Timmy came from nowhere!? He was a top 10 pick and a candidate at one point to go #1. Going into last season, he was almost universally seen as one of the top pitching prospects in the game. He’s the opposite of a player coming from nowhere.

Really, he won the Golden Spikes Award and he became the first player ever to be named both the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year.
Obscurity, yeah.

And he’s having a true breakout year this season. Lots of people are having breakout seasons, whether they were prospected to, or not.

i think i heard Kruk say this
a lot of them prefer to be starters anyway, rarely is any pitcher a reliever for his entire career. Perhaps this is just them knowing they gotta be good to keep on starting.

Looking at the Fresno box score
I noticed that Ehire Adrianza was starting at SS. Can anyone explain this promotion?
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Adrianza%20%20SS&pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=501303
Also, why hasn’t schierholtz started the past couple games?
by superk1ng on Jul 2, 2008 7:01 PM PDT 0 recs
Whoa Adrianza all the way up from the rookie team? I did see Casey Bond listed in a box score in a Fresno game this year. C Bond is with the Salem-Keizer short season rookie team.
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Yea, I’m listening to the game right now. Apparently he’s VERY advanced defensively but they didn’t mention his offense. He got a base hit in his first AB though(line drive), which is pretty cool.

Hmm.
Looking at Bleed Cubbie Blue, there’s discussion about how the Cubs should light Correia up, because he’s “a nomadic character,” which apparently means he’s a journeyman (which is amusing, since he’s been with the Giants organization his whole career thus far) and “he fucking sucks.”
Thus, Correia must return to his late 2007 form tonight. MUST.
Also, they have like 5+ times more comments then us, which is weird – usually, whenever I check he other team blog, we’re the chatty ones. What’s become of us, McCoven!?

Ryan Dempster has an annoying delivery – the part were he moves his glove around just before he throws a pitch. I just wanted to say that. I hope the Giants keep him in the stretch position all night, if not to score runs, then at least to keep him from doing his windup. Am I right, guys?!
