Timmy SI Cover: Here it is!

The Freak. The Manchild. Tiny Tim. Tom Verducci is a bad nick-namer. Thank God the folks here have taken it upon themselves to disregard these mindless monikers. I guess I'm okay with The Enchanter. Anyway...
Timmy is the first Giant to grace the cover since you-know-who, who was featured seven times during his 22 year career.
How about a poll to round out this post? Who will be the next Giant to take on the SI Cover Jinx:

Anyone find it?
Has anyone found this week’s SI? I have been trying to get it at the local Barnes and Noble since Monday. Someone there is even e-mailing both the magazine and the distributor on my behalf, and thus far no results.
Since Chris Lincecum got 5% of the votes (I voted for the collage.), maybe I’ll become his agent after all! :)

Isn't there some sort of curse associated with SI covers?
Or is that just a football thing?

SI writing a cover story about the jinx (with a black cat!) shows that they’re a little full of themselves. Having said that, plenty of players or teams have experienced a bad run immediately after appearing on the cover. The fact that the examples are too numerous to mention should give us all pause.
Let’s just say I’m plenty nervous for Timmy’s next few starts.

Well, typically, when you’re on the cover of SI it’s because you’re doing something amazing. The people they choose are often times at their peaks and, naturally, the only direction for them to go is down.
Will Timmy have a higher 2nd half ERA? Probably, but it won’t be because of SI.

good point. Except Timmy could definitely have a similar 2nd half, I think.

I expect
I expect Matt Cain to have an ERA that is perhaps a full run lower in the second half than the first, but I would gladly accept the same ERA from Tim as he put up in the first half.
I got to thinking about the so-called “jinx.” Players and teams run hot and cold. In order to get on the cover of SI, a player or team has to be pretty hot for a while. That could leave the player or team ripe for a cold cycle.
Tim knew he would be on the cover of SI when he pitched on Saturday (or at least the announcers did). It would seem to me that if there truly were a jinx, it would have struck that very day.

Timmy will now join the NFL
and grace the cover of EA Madden football. He will then break both arms, both legs, his back and neck, and also contract herpes.

The Freak
Tim had two nicknames at the University of Washington. One was Seabiscuit for being so good with a small body. The other was The Freak of Nature for kipping to his feet from his back, for his doing back flips and for his walking on his hands to relieve stress.

Jinx
Bonds was on the cover seven times…did he defeat the jinx and establish the greatest record in sports?
Or did the jinx get him by having him retire in shame?

If you think about it...
... he would have completely shattered that HR record – and probably eclipsed the 800 mark – if it weren’t for his one and a half (is that right?) missing years of at bats.

the jinx implies some kind of supernatural/metaphysical power which we don't have control of...
SI was only too happy to help contribute to any shame cast upon Bonds with their covers.![]()

i believe
that Pedro Gomez, Tom Verducci, Jeff Pearlman and Dan Wetzel have an uncanny knack at spreading their infectious douchebaggery, which leads to all sorts of symptoms of underachievement or poor performance,
but I don’t think the jinx of being on the cover caused barry to “retire” in shame. i think it was the content of those covers.

This Week's Jinx...
Notice the upper right corner, something about Aaron Rodgers filling Brett Favre’s shoes…
Well, today, ESPN reports that the Packers are talking about bringing Favre back (again).
Kinda sucks for Rodgers. I bet he’s buying the jinx about now.

Enchanter is funny, but no one gets it, including Tim. (They asked him about it last season on KNBR.)
