Jose Castillo is more valuable than Matt Cain

So after last night's game it is very clear to me that Matt Cain reads this blog.  How else can you explain last night's dominating performance?  He was so upset about all the negative posts about him that it fueled his competitive spirit and he took the mound with the sole intention of proving us naysayers wrong.  What other possible explanation is there?  Well with that all summed up, let me get to the main part of my post:

Why Jose Castillo is more valuable than Matt Cain

  1. Jose Castillo has hit 3x as many homers as Cain.  3x!
  2. Castillo means Castle in English and that's awesome.  It reminds me of Johnny Castle from Dirty Dancing.  Fess up guys!  You know deep down that movie is a guilty pleasure for you too.  Cain doesn't mean anything!
  3. Jose Castillo is bilingual.

So that about sums it up.

Matt Cain invented Esperanto.

In English, “Matt Cain” means “Carlos Zambrano sucks.”

The only reason Matt Cain has hit fewer dingers than Jose Castillo is that he doesn’t want to hurt Jose’s feelings.

+1

in fact, i think every fact should be a direct result of hitting into a double play.

that being said, jaw-dropping play last night from Jose, and Bowker gets props for the pick.
I have to be honest, that may be the best defensive play I’ve seen from a Giants’ third baseman in my lifetime. Pete Happy was great over there, and made tough plays look easy…but that was something else.

Good news

Matt Cain and Jose Castillo (along with the hitting and base running of Fast Freddie Lewis) were the stars of last night’s game.

And I have good news on each of them.

Let me start with Jose, whose news is less impressive and more an indication of a weakness on the part of his teammates. Incredibly, at 1.74 bases per hit, Jose leads all Giants in that measure of power. 1.74 bases per hit isn’t bad, mind you, and is likely a LOT higher than most would expect from Jose or even think off the top of their heads that he had delivered. But to be leading one’s team with 1.74 bases per hit speaks rather horribly to the rest of the team.

As for Matt, as mentioned here before, he actually has been good since giving up a career-high nine runs on April 18th. Since then his ERA has been 3.58, his K/BB ratio 2.75 and his WHIP 1.20.

Throw in that he has been primarily a second-half pitcher (Last night was his first start of the second half, assuming the second half starts on July 1st.), and I think things are looking pretty good for Matt. I was a bit worried after he struck out only three while walking four in his June 4th start, but he bounced back with six strikeouts and only one walk in his very next outing, alleviating my fears.

So the question is, if Matt does have a good second half (say an ERA of 3.25 the rest of the way), would you take him off the no-trade list and listen to offers? Or would he be showing that he is an ace or near-ace who is too valuable to trade?

by sharksrog on Jul 2, 2008 11:03 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No one

Is too valuable to trade.

Matt however, if he can maintain the pace you suggest, has many intangible values to us as giants fans that increases his trade value above and beyond what his on the field performance suggests.

He is in my mind (and many others it seems) a Franchise type player. Trading him, even if we got great players in return, would make me sad.

Brian Wilson should not be on anyone’s untouchable list.

Will you then settle for Wilson & Sanchez being on the " We would not get back the value it would take for what their potentional can deliver list"?

Because at this point no one is very likely to offer use the talent they could very likely be in 18 months. Yes both could burn out but both could also be conerstone type players for then next 5+ years after the learning period. Encase you have not noticed those kind of players are not hiting the Free Agent market very often these days.

I will say this

I will say this: Swing-through K’s are far more important than swing-through strikes—although clearly the two are somewhat related.

by sharksrog on Jul 2, 2008 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Matt doesn't

Matt has above-average swing-through stuff, but he doesn’t have elite swing-through stuff, as relatively modest career K rate would indicate. I mentioned a couple of starts ago he had 14 swing-throughs, which I thought was pretty good.

What I liked about Matt last night was that he had good control and was using his curve a lot. I think Matt’s best avenue to better pitching is to eschew the slider to an extent and to load up with his curve and his best swing-through pitch (which Kruk agreed to last night), his change up.

by sharksrog on Jul 2, 2008 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The biggest problem with Cain and Lincecum is they sometimes get fastball happy. I can see why, I mean if I could throw 95 MPH gas as easily as they do, I’d probably try to blow everyone away. But they also have some potentially devastating secondary pitches, and I wish they would use them a bit more. Idk if that’s Molina’s call or the pitcher or what, but it’s no secret that when they throw more off-speed stuff (and the pitch is working for them that day) they usually dominate.

by Hobbes2d on Jul 2, 2008 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

trading Cain

doesn’t really make sense, unless it’s complete theft (Cain for Uggla + Ramierez or something).
Ironically, the Giants have gone from a “win now” situation with Bonds to a “win very soon” situation with Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez pre-free agency. The three of in the rotation at way below market is a situation that MUST be turned into soft, flakey, golden wins, with a post-season sauce.

Trading one of them for AA-level guys who are a few years away just punts the next couple years. If you are going to punt, you should punt ALL of them, and really rebuild (I don’t suggest this). Trading one of them for a ML-readly player – even a great one – doesn’t really make the Giants much better, becuase of the drop off in the rotation.

It's not that hard to figure out

This site’s debut? 2005.
Main Cain’s debut? 2005.
My heartbreakingly eloquent description of his first dominant start (which was eerily similar to last night’s game) on Grant’s first vacation from the site? 2005.

In short, this site has matured along with Cain, and suffered growing pains along with Cain. That, and we all had to watch last season as Cain suffered through some of the worst offensive and bullpen support anybody’s ever seen a pitcher receive—and witnessed him handle it with supreme class and maturity.

While we're reminiscing...

I was paging through the Gameday Thread from last night, seeing all the faux Cain bashing - MATT CAIN SUCKS!!! - and I realized that’s been going on a really long time now. I wondered when it all started, and the new “Power Search” function made it really easy to find—it was more than two years ago, on the Gameday Thread for 4/24/06.

Natto is the first person to actually bash him sarcastically, but it’s at the behest of jfiddy, who didn’t want people to jinx Cain with compliments. I thought it was interesting that the tradition has lasted that long, and also that the two people who came up with it have about 20,000 comments between them—377 by jfiddy and and 19,000+ by Natto. Anyway, I wanted to post that somewhere because I thought that was kind of cool.

He mentions the Internet in the wrap-up of last night’s game.

The burly right-hander not only put the Cubs’ bats to sleep, but he also recorded his 100th strikeout of the season to give the Giants three pitchers with a 100 or more strikeouts before the All-Star break for the first time in the San Francisco era.

“It’s pretty cool. I definitely haven’t noticed that until the past couple of days when stuff has been on the Internet,” Cain said. “It’s definitely something that’s good, and we’ve all been able to get deep into games, which sometimes doesn’t happen when you get those strikeout numbers up.”

Like your average 23 year old he probably gets his news off the internet. If he’s read anything on the internet about the Giants in the last week or so he would have read about Tim’s, Jon’s and his strikeout totals. He’d have to go pretty deep into this blog to read that which has been prime Giants news in more standard outlets (we already know it and are too busy talking ‘bout other stuff).

The best thing about this season:

Is that we’ve gotten to see many players that look like key building blocks to the future of this team. The Giants recently have been a team overflowing with geezers. Players way past their prime at most positions, and the few youngsters were nothing to write home about (with a couple exceptions in the rotation). This year we’ve seen a team that may still be overrun with geezers, but is showing some signs of being a serious threat in the not so distant future. We all knew Lincecum and Cain were building blocks, but I don’t think that before the season started, you would have gotten many people to predict the level of success that players like Fred Lewis, Jonathan Sanchez, John Bowker, and even Brian Wilson would have. The team finally looks like it’s preparing for the future, not trying to win in the present. It’s nice to see.

I think

I think the best things about this season have been the breakouts of Tim Lincecum and Jonathan Sanchez, the explosion of Madison Bumgarner in Low A, and the drafting of Butch Posey and Conor Gillaspie.

A Jose Castillo DP grounder knocked down the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The out at second knocked down the first tower, and the second one fell when Jose was out at first. What?? Too soon??

Jose Castillo hit a double play ground ball that prevented several chads from being completely punched out in Florida.

Jose Castillo

once hit into the perfect double play. It was so perfect, that it ended the inning even though there were only two outs. It was not a triple play

Jose Castillo's

Non-double play balls and non-extra-basehits actually lower gas prices.
