Poll: Who will be the first Giant SP to pitch a complete game?
Actually, I'm new here so I don't know if this has been done (searched for it), but yeah. I actually want to see how many people throw in a vote for the fourth answer =)
My vote's for Cain, since he's really good when he's "on".
Lincecum throws too many pitches sometimes, and walks hurt.
Sanchez... still don't know enough 'bout the guy.
Zito.. well, aside from the obvious... I don't think Bochy would let him close out a game where he's not leading by more than 3 runs.
I'm interested in seeing the results! =)

Really? Sanchez?
Him?
I’d vote Zito before Sanchez. I just doesn’t seem like he’s able to throw enough pitches to make a CG. If Zito has one of his abboration games when he’s on and doesn’t walk many, he could probably make 9 innings.
I voted for Cain over Lincecum (almost punched myself in the face for that, btw). I think the team’s much more careful with Tim than Cain, and even if Tim pitches dominantly, he walks a few too many to keep under the 120 pitch count needed for a Giant CG. Cain, pitching like he did last night, could easy go CG.

oh.
oh, i guess it might have seemed like it, but the way I placed the order of pitchers in the poll wasn’t based on anything in particular.. I just typed them in the order that I remembered them :P (and wow, it just happens to be in alphabetical order hahah)
I didn’t say sanchez had any better of a chance to complete a game over zito ;) just to clarify.

no, no wasn't talking towards you
You should include him in the poll. I was just wondering about the one person that had voted for him.

Zito?
he’d have to make it to the 6th inning first, which seems unlikely.
Sanchez has gone at least 7 innings in 5 of his last 6 starts. Plus, he’s a better pitcher.

Well, we know his middle name is Hussein. That’s enough for me to not vote for him. Matt Cain for Complete Game ‘08!

Cain could have had the CG Last night
And has pitched 3 cg’s so far in his career.
I however think that it is unlikely to happen this year for anyone because we actually have a closer who can be counted on to close out the game and we aren’t often going to score enough runs to make it a blowout wherein Bochy feels comfortable enough to let the starter go 9.
And rightly so.

man, the old giants.. I’ve always liked Estes.. always wanted him to do well, but he never really did too great. Felt the same way for Tomko.. too bad. I really like our rotation now though.. We need another Kirk Reuter :)

Tim
Is going to have a start this year when the strikes are fallin’, the ump is friendly, and the hitters are stoned.
Either that or Zito in a CG loss 16-3 after giving up 8 in the first…. just let him ride it out.

Lincecum
Although I really could have gone either way between him and Cain. Lincecum pitched 7 innings in Washington and threw just 83 pitches; Hinshaw and Sadler threw 21 more in 2 innings of relief. They took him out because the Giants had a 9-1 lead and it was a muggy DC night.
On the other hand, Cain has gone 8 innings 3 times this season to only one for Lincecum.

Cain Lincecum throw a complete game?
I think Matt Cain is the more likely of the two to pitch the Giants’ next complete game—and I don’t think the other three have much chance.
I think the Giants will continue to be careful with Tim, whose advantage over Matt in this regard would be that he averages fewer pitches per inning and the last I looked had thrown more pitches than Matt in a single game this season and also had a slightly higher pitch-per-game average (which he might have given up last night).
But over a year ago I said that I believed Matt was more likely to pitch a no-hitter than Tim (even though I thought Tim was clearly the better pitcher). When Matt is on, he is ON. Tim’s advantage is that he is much more consistent than Matt. Matt has had a non-quality start nearly twice as often as Tim.
I think for the same reason, Matt is more likely to be the one to pitch the next complete game. When Matt is really on and has good control, his pitch count per inning drops, which improves his chance of throwing a complete game.
I believe Tim has gone into the ninth inning only once, the night he gave up three hits on five fastballs in the ninth inning to negate probably his second-best start of the season. It appeared he was going to start the ninth against the Brewers when he pitched a very fine game against them in Milwaukee last season, but the Giants rallied for a long inning and the Giants wisely went for a reliever instead.
Entering the season, would you have guessed that Tim would be averaging more pitches per outing (which may no longer be the case), have the greater number of pitches in a single game and be averaging more innings per outing (6.57 to Matt’s 6.30)?
I wouldn’t have. And I don’t think anyone here is a bigger fan of Tim’s than I.
by sharksrog on Jul 2, 2008 11:15 AM PDT 0 recs
This
When Matt Cain is on, he is really freaking on. IE – Better than Tim.
I think that is why those of us who really like Cain think he could still become amazing.
He 2 hit the cubs last night, for example. Had the Giants picked up 2-3 more runs that could have easily been a CG shutout on his record.

No way
Welch’s unorthodox mechanics would never permit him to last that long. Plus, all the SABR money’s on Keefe.

This is weird… I voted for Lincecum and sharksrog voted for Cain… what’s happening here???
They way I see it, the CG this year is going to come down to pitch count more than anything else, and Cain has always thrown more pitches than Lincecum. I think that puts the advantage squarely with Tim.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
by howtheyscored on Jul 2, 2008 1:20 PM PDT 0 recs
Au contraire
Matt doesn’t ALWAYS throw more pitches than Tim. Although Matt’s strikeouts are up nicely this season, he isn’t the strikeout artist Tim is. Thus, when Matt is one and has his control, he is more likely to get harmless flies than Tim, while Tim is likely to get more strikeouts and ground balls that find their way to being hits.
Someone wisely cited Tim’s outing against the Nationals, the one in which he threw only 83 pitches in seven innings. But I think two things made that outing an exception.
First, the Nationals, who aren’t a good hitting team anyway, were missing something like five normal starters, allowing Tim to pitch to bats with near-impunity, something that isn’t likely to be the case to that extreme again—or certainly not frequently.
Second, the day was hot and humid, and Tim grew up in the cooler weather of the Seattle area. It appeared to me that he was just trying to survive. They said on the pre-game the next day that on that day after his start, he was having a hard time keeping food down.
I think the Tim Lincecum we saw that day wasn’t the usual Tim Lincecum. It might resemble the Tim Lincecum half a dozen years down the road more, but I thought his pitching that day was out of character. Nothing wrong with pitching that way ALL the time if he could get away with it. But I believe almost every lineup he will face over the remainder of his career will require a more rigorous - and more pitch-intensive - approach.
In short, Tim throws fewer pitches per inning than Matt, but when Matt is really ON, he hardly allows any base runners, often doesn’t have an inordinate number of strikeouts and is pretty pitch-efficient.

I think the score of the game will have as much to do with it. If the score is close, Bochy seems to like to go to the pen. If it’s not as close, I think Bochy is more likely to give to starter a shot to finish it.

My Gut Says None
Cain is built for complete games but will none the less have zero this year even though he will finish with an ERA below 4 and more the 200 innings and Ks. Lincecum is learning fast how to minimize his pitch count and will have many years in the the future with multiple complete games but not this year though he too will finish with more the 200 innings and Ks and he will keep his ERA below 3. Sanchez too is learning how to minimize his pitch count but it ain’t happening this year inspite of the fact that he will be the third Giants starter this year to keep his ERA below 4 and finish with more the 200 innings and Ks.
by giantsrainman on Jul 2, 2008 3:15 PM PDT 0 recs
Jonathan
Jonathan Sanchez is averaging precisely 6.0 innings per start this season. If he gets 33 starts on the year, I think he has a decent chance to exceed 200 innings. If he receives only 32, I think he is a long shot.
by sharksrog on Jul 2, 2008 5:29 PM PDT 0 recs
Corriea or Zito.
I think they let either of the Sanchez, Cain or Tim go 9 full this season one of 3 things had to happen.
1) Wilson has had melted down.
2) Wilson thrown 3 straight days before hand.
3) or young the starter in question is flirting with a No No.
This protects the 3 young starters and keeps giving Wilson chances to learn and master his trade.
Were as Corriea and Zito being older if they have game were they are on boulder Skull should be willing to take more chances with them
" Their still Shitty" - Major Leagues the movie.
I am a Giants fan. Thus I enjoy my pain. Currently enjoying it more then usual.
