Open Gameday Thread, 7/19

Milwaukee Brewers @ San Francisco Giants

Does anyone have last night's game still on their DVR? Fourth inning, section 103, Mike Cameron was up, and I actually looked the ball into my glove this time. I doubt I made it on the air, but you never know....

El Guapo

While the downtime was needed, Sanchez has not pitched since Wednesday July 9th so will keep an eye on his control.

I think we are going to lose today. And by lose I mean win. And by win I mean get closer to a top pick in the draft. And by getting closer to a top pick in the draft I mean lose today.

Were you sitting right in the front row? I saw a guy make a great snag on a foul ball in the front row.

I’ve convinced myself I’m never going to catch a foul ball ever (or even have the opportunity to catch one, I think I repel foul balls). I hate you Grant. :(

I still kind of want to see if he can get his OPS+ to negative numbers. /o\

by jponry on Jul 19, 2008 1:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i thought ops+ was (OBP/lgOBP+SLG%/lgSLG%). how do you get negative?

proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..

by Azmanz on Jul 19, 2008 1:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

OPS+ = 100 * (OBP/lgOBP* + SLG/lgSLG* – 1)

Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.

by groug on Jul 19, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up   1 recs

Because otherwise, if you’re league average in both SLG and OBP, you have OPS+ = 100*(1+1) = 200. That’s why it’s necessary to subtract one.

Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.

by groug on Jul 19, 2008 1:14 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

thanks

for the heads up

proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..

by Azmanz on Jul 19, 2008 1:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

so

if your obp and slg% are both below half the league average you have an ops+ in the negative?

proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..

by Azmanz on Jul 19, 2008 1:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

Vizquel is currently being dragged down by his .175 SLG, far below half the league average of .423.

There was a letter in the Chronicle Datebook this morning that said “I’ve listened to every announcer group in the majors and Kruk and Kuip are the biggest homers there are!”

And I was like “There is no way you can listen to the White Sox announcers and come away thinking Hawk is less of a homer than Kruk and Kuip.”

or the red sox, or the cubs . . .

or just about every club out there

by superk1ng on Jul 19, 2008 1:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

obviosuly kruk and kuip are homers; that’s their job, to advertise giants’ baseball. but they manage to combine that with a professional, humorous approach and aren’t nearly as bombastic (or drunk) as the announcers of some other team.s

by cornball on Jul 19, 2008 1:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The Cardinals as well. When you actively root for a ball to clear the fence, and you are an announcer, you are a homer.

Dammit

I forgot the game wasn’t on tv. On the plus side, I did get to see a couple of seconds of overly well-groomed men in suits, one of them called Brother Johnny, very stiffly explaining why the Church of Christ is the only true church. So that’s a plus.
