OT: Dark Knight

Chances are this thread will contain spoilers. Don't read if you haven't seen or will get angry.
Got to go see the flick last night, IMAX style. First, you must see this movie in IMAX. It is visually amazing. Second, it is long (about 2:30 hours), so be ready for that.
Overall, I enjoyed it. However, it was not quite as good as I was hoping it would be. It's weird to say this with the movie being so long, but it seemed like the last 20-30 minutes were rushed. I think they added one too many plot twists and the last one just didn't do it for me. Also, the movie is somewhat frustrating. You get to the point that (and I know it's a comic book movie) that it's not too believable. The way they keep falling for the Joker's tricks gets old after awhile. Common sense would eventually have to come into play, even in comic book land. As for the performances:
Ledger was amazing. I'm not the type to exaggerate people's accomplishments because they passed away, so when I say he made the movie he truly did. ******SPOILER ALERT******* I feel sorry for whoever has to follow in his footsteps. It's going to be extremely tough.
Bale was solid, he plays the aloof billionaire very well. Couldn't help but be reminded of American Pyscho with some of the scenes.
****Spoiler Alert*****Glad Maggie G. is dead. Didn't care for her acting and the idea that both Wayne and Dent would be in love with her is the biggest amount of make believe in the flick.
Supporting cast was also very good, no complaints about any of them.
Overall, I'd give it a B to B-, which is kind of disappointing since I was very excited to see the movie and was hoping is would be A+++.
Side note: Leaving the theater, I see out of the corner of my eye a guy in full on Joker make-up and dress. Scared the shit out of me.

Why so seriously?
Personally, I didn’t care much for this movie. Of course, I didn’t care much for “Batman Begins” either, so it figures. Ledger was pretty fun to watch, but Bale’s way of spitting through all his lines, and the jumbled nature of the plot, combined with the ridiculous Two-Face thing, combined to make this movie mostly uninteresting for me.
I think there is a fundamental flaw with the Batman movies: they are supposed to take place in “the real world”. With stuff like X-Men, or Harry Potter, or even Indiana Jones, there’s a buy-in before you even step foot in the theater, so ridiculous “magical” stuff is okay. In the Batman movies, however, it’s really hard to make that leap, because they keep trying to remind us that we’re in “the real world”. So all the typical action B.S. that is impossible in real-life (like Joker’s goons netting a helicopter- what, were they stationed at every single high rise?) doesn’t ring true at all, the same way it doesn’t in films like Live Free Die Hard (ugh!).

I was in awe the whole time. Beyond being the best comic book movie ever, it’s just an amazing crime film, with some of the best character development I’ve ever seen on film.

Definitely won’t give it best comic book movie ever status. Like Batman Returns more, probably Spiderman 2 as well. Character development was well done and it was awesome visually, but the story was drawn out too long.

Hold it-- Batman is BRUCE WAYNE???? Tricky, tricky white boy.
Crap—I hope I didn’t spoil it.
Great movie. Ledger’s Joker is the centerpiece of the film and might, in time, become my favorite movie villain of all time. Not sure yet. But it’s in the top few. One of the reviews said to watch for two one-word line deliveries, as they are perfect and amazing. One is “Yeah,” and the other is “Hi.” RIGHT ON. Those two lines, approximately three hours apart, are brilliantly delivered. Great stuff.
I do think there could have been more story or development, or something. There was no wasted time, not one second, but still… something was missing. Part of the structural problem is that these movies go for the two-villain format rather than one villain. Can you imagine 2h30m spent with Batman vs. Ledger’s Joker? Would have been incredible. Bringing in Two Face was about as well done as the two-villain format will permit, but would have been so much better with just the Joker. Eckhart’s Dent/2Face would have been great in the sequel for 2h30m.
I give this movie an A. Not A+. An A.

I guess it wouldn’t have helped for the Batman/Wayne character development but I thought the movie could have ended before the ferry/Two Face and Gordon family scenes. Joker’s in jail, Two Face is born, Dawes is dead, Batman is broken. That would have been an awesome cliffhanger and place to leave off, IMO.

I went into this movie spoiler free, and was shocked to even see a Two-Face transformation even in this movie; I just figured they would be saving it for the next film, so it was a pleasant surprise to be treated to Batman’s two craziest villains finally on screen together. finished seeing it half an hour ago (maybe spoilers)
Heath Ledger = AWESOME. Great performance, lived up to my incredibly high expectations (partly from the trailers)
Christian Bale is still good, although I appreciated his performance more in batman begins (it was just fresher; little bit old now). Very good though.
The ending is a little bit strange, I thought. SPOILER: Two-face dying seems to make it hard for another movie, which surprised me, with all the hype for Dark Knight. The middle is superb, however, especially the later middle. Didn’t get to see it Imax, unfortunately, although I can see how that would be great. I would give it probably an A.

Why would that loss make it harder to make another film?
You think they’re out of villains? Catwoman, the Riddler, and the Penguin remain as major nemeses, and I would HOPE they would invent new ones before going to the lesser ones (Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, etc.)

SPOILERS!!!
I just got back. My thoughts.
There were a couple really big missed opportunities:
1 – Two-Face should have killed Gordon’s son. That would have been AMAZING.
2 – The “good” ship should have hit the button and blown itself up.
These are two things that you NEVER see in movies that would really push it as something different and special.
Two-Face should not have died. This was his movie. He was on screen way more than Joker and maybe even more than Batman. We see an entire character arc. And once he became Two-Face he was very strong in the role. Just absolutely brutal in his coin flipping simplicity. Very scary.
Joker was awesome. I think a part of the reason people are flipping out is because this is the first strong portrayal of him. Not to take anything away because he was excellent. It’s sad that he won’t be able to come back because some of his dialog truly showed how much he and the Batman character mean to each other (in terms of story).
The accountant who was going to out Wayne I thought, at one point, could end up being Robin. Doubtful, though.
Also, I think the “Batman on the run” ending was really really lame and definitely took away from the picture. It just did not make much sense. Leave Two-Face alive, ship him to Gotham and now Batman is not a bad guy. It was just weird and left me going ???
Overall, I felt the film was complex, fun and very much worth my time. I have no idea how I would grade it. I don’t think I could give it an “A” because of the end and how Two-Face died. It’s better than a B, too. Somewhere in the A to B range, I guess. I dunno. Mebbe after a day of digesting it will hit harder.
Now Wall-E. A+. No doubt in my mind.
by positiveuphemism on Jul 18, 2008 11:07 PM PDT 0 recs
Actually, I think Two-face dying was the right choice
Lets face it, his entire motivation is self destructive to the point that his death is the only reasonable outcome. Not only is his continued existence physically impossible (exposed muscle and bone, hello), but his pathos is both a misplaced search for vengeance and a latent desire to be put out of his misery. Joker revels in chaos and will risk his life to proliferate it, Two-face simply seeks to escape his mental anguish.
You’re right about blowing up the boat, though. It would have been a gutsy call, but the right one, IMO. Not only interesting for transgressing against our expectations as viewer, but a further challenge to Bruce Wayne’s core beliefs setting up another interesting crisis of conscience to develop in the third film. The prisoner tossing the detonator out the window was pretty cool, though.

RE: ferries blowing up
I actually thought the ferries not blowing up was a gutsier move in this day and age. We live in cynical times. The cynical outlook is that they’d be quite willing to destroy the other ferry to save their own lives. The whole point was that humans don’t automatically become animals when faced with a survival situation. The Joker was wrong about that. You remember his speech about the civilized people with their rules eating each other? That’s what he thought would happen with the ferries. He was wrong.
It just seems to me that it’s a gutsy thing to say nowadays that humans will rise above petty self-preservation in times of distress.

Well
I was mostly responding to Bhaakon. I actually thought about that possibility. It would be right in line with the Joker’s MO during the movie. But then I thought it would be too obvious and that the twist would be that neither ferry would actually blow up if a detonator was triggered. Then I thought that neither would blow up because nobody would trigger the detonator. It kept making me change my mind.

Know, I understood you. I actually thought it would be that way when I was watching the movie, based on the previous dilemma with Dent and the Kentucky fried love interest. I was just agreeing with you on both points (that the civilians should have turned the key, and that it should have blown up their own boat).
The only thing that really bothered me about the whole prisoner’s dilemma situation on the ferries was that it was so contrived. Granted, it’s a movie, and a comic book movie at that, but the need to get the prisoners out of town ahead of the civilians was thinly justified even by those low standards.

Very good
It’s hard for me to remember a movie as tense as this one. Movies don’t get me tense at all. Except for this one. The Joker was legitimately scary. The only other movie villain that I can think of that has been legitimately scary was Hannibal Lecter. And the Joker’s funner than him.
Overall, it was fantastic. There were a couple things I didn’t like and there were a couple things I’m not sure about, but most of it was very good.
I didn’t like that Two-Faced died. At least I think he died. I can see why they did it but I think he should have gotten more time as Two-Face, as opposed to Harvey Dent. I didn’t like the Jigsaw style games that the Joker began playing. Actually, it was mostly the whole thing with the ferries I didn’t like. I can’t even really explain it at the moment. There was just something that didn’t sit right with me there. Though I did enjoy Deebo (or the guy that played Deebo) being on the convict ferry. I also didn’t really like the whole “you can’t spy on people, I’m resigning” thing. It felt like a cheap jab at the current administration. I don’t like cheap jabs. I also felt that he was completely justified with what he did.
Hmm, I can’t think of anything else at the moment. That’s it really. And those were minor problems.
I’m with everyone else as to Heath Ledger’s performance. And I’m really disappointed we won’t get to see him reprise the role. I am happy that Batman showed his smarts a little more in this one. That was one thing that turned one of my friends off of Batman Begins. It didn’t annoy me at all but I’m glad he showed his own thinking ability instead of relying on Morgan Freeman’s character. And, apparently with Freeman’s character resigning, he will be doing even more of it. He did resign, didn’t he? That actually kind of confused me.
Anyways, that’s a poorly written review but I’ve only seen it once and I usually need to see things a couple times or think about it more to come up with something more coherent.
Suffice it to say I thought it was very very good.

Agreed.
HaveNot, remember that Batman (or, as the Gothamites call him in these movies, the Batman) showed Lucius/Morgan Freeman the sonar surveillance thing, and after their tiff about its use, Batman told him that the final thing he should do is enter his own name into it. He did, and all the screens fizzled out, thus signaling the “machine” is defunct. Lucius kind of smiled, and turned and walked out. I concur that this signals he was satisfied with the surveillance no longer operating, and thus didn’t resign.

didn’t even think of that scene as being a knock at the Bush adminstration at the time, but of cause you’re right, that’s exactly what they were doing. I think if they fixed some of the things that some of us posters didn’t like, there would have been others who weren’t happy. It’s impossible to make a perfect movie, but this one came fairly close. I also didn’t like the ending with Batman being a villian though. And not just a villian, a cop killer as well. How are they going to reconcile that in the next sequel?? It can only be done in a lame manner.

Two-face dead? ***Spoilers**
I have seen it twice and Two-Face’s death is actually pretty ambiguous. After the first time I saw it I was 90% sure he was dead. After the second time I am only 50/50. They never actually say he is dead only that his mission is dead if people find out what Harvey Two-Face did. That is why Batman takes the blame. If they wanted to bring him back in the third or fourth movie they could and it would not contradict anything that happened at the end of TDK.
By the way its the best movie I have ever seen. I have never seen a movie so relentless in its story telling, so perfectly executed and a movie with so much hype actually exceed it.
by covenant on Jul 19, 2008 3:17 AM PDT 0 recs
Harvey's not dead
When watching the movie, I believed here was merely unconscious. A friend of mine noted you can see Harvey breathing in the background when Gordon and Batman are talking about what to do. I believe the funeral was nothing short of a facade to take the final step towards ensuring that the “White Knight” of Gotham’s reputation stays pristine. Even if people saw him post accident, their thoughts of him would be altered. I still believe Two-Face is the villain for the third film.
