Cruz was more highly regarded as a prospect, and was a corner outfielder, while Jones was a CF. I had high hopes for Cruz in my teenage years. I remember when he was called up to the Majors, Rob Neyer posted about how the Giants were dumb for thinking he was a prospects, and then, when he was traded to the Indians, Neyer wrote the Giants were dumb for trading him. You’d better believe he got an indignant email over that blunder!!!

I was sad when he was traded, too. And even sadder when he forgot how to pitch.

by jcb9 on Jul 17, 2008 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Why I liked Jerome...

Spring Training in Scottsdale a few years back (I think 2003); It’s about the 7th inning, and my boys and I are sitting by the railing down the LF line. Williams has pitched a couple innings and is done for the day. He comes strolling down the line toward the LF fence as he gets ready to do his running. It’s between innings and the PA is playing “Jammin’”. As Jerome passes right by us, and … I don’t know…I just thought it was cool the way he was kind of into the song. A little head bob, almost imperceptible. Just looked like a kid who was happy to be at Spring Training with the big club, looking forward to the year ahead, enjoying a song that he probably heard quite a bit growing up in Hawaii. Just one of those little moments that make Spring Training special for me.

After the game, my two younger sons wanted autographs, so we stood by the front “gauntlet” area where the players move from clubhouse to bus at game’s end. Every single player whisked by the dozens of us who were pressed against the bars hoping for autographs. I especially remember Cody Ransom sauntering by, nose in the air. Jerome was the only one who stopped to sign, and he took several minutes to sign for just about everyone who was asking him to.

That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!

Whither the late, great Shreveport Captains?

For some reason, I keep an Excel spreadsheet on file, containing 43 of the best pitchers ever to sport the Shreveport Captains uniform. Said spreadsheet goes all the way back to Bob Tufts in 1979, the year Shreveport became a Giants affiliate, and it continues all the way through to 2001 and 2002, when they changed their name to the Shreveport Swamp Dragons and featured the aforementioned Jerome Williams and Jesse Foppert (“Hey Jesse!! Na-now, Jerome!! Yes!”)

A few other notable (to me, anyway), and as yet unmentioned Shreveport pitchers:
– George Ferran ‘86
– Joe Olker ‘88
– Paul McClellan ‘89 and ‘91
– Rick Huisman ‘92
– Steve Bourgeois ‘95

What about ...

Rich Aldrete, brother of Mike “Enough” Aldrete?

Ah, Mike Aldrete. One of my all-time favorite mediocre Giants.

Mike Aldrete

he had the misfortune of being a 1b when Will Clark was here. the guy totally raked in the minors. I’m surprised he wasn’t considered more of a prospect. Given his on base abilities, in today’s game, he might be one, though he wasn’t much of a power hitter.

Bonds stands alone.

Aldrete

I was watching the Classic Giants game from 87 where the Giants clinched the division and the announcers were talking about how they thought Aldrete could hit .350 or .360 and they thought he was a lot like Tony Gwynn has a hitter hahaha. I just laughed when I heard that.

Speaking of that game Gwynn was awesome. He was already starting to gain weight in 87 but he was playing GG caliber OF, he threw out a Giant at home, and made a bunch of great plays in RF that night. He also went 3 for 5, and he stole like 57 bases that year. He was an awesome player, I wish I could have seen more of him in his prime when he still had his speed.

Super Spring Training

I was around the same age and recall he hit around .500 in spring training. For many of us kids of that era, he served as a stark lesson that spring training success does not necessarily translate to regluar season success. Especially for journeymen non-prospects.

Side note

Posey won the golden spikes this year- the last Giant who won those is doing pretty well, at least that’s what I hear.

Dave McCarty

I always thought we’d get a little left handed power from him.

McCarty wasn’t really a prospect with us – he was a big prospect previously, but he was past that point when we got him, having already spent parts of three seasons in the majors with the Twins.

Hmmm… the word “from” should not be capitalized in title case.

Well, not according to my company’s standards, anyway. Title case is pretty arbitrary by nature.

It's made worse

by the fact that “the” isn’t capitalized. Methinks grant no speakeah dah english.

by bondslegend on Jul 18, 2008 12:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Actually, now that I think about it, all words which appear in hyphenates DO get capitalized – so his problem here is actually the word “the.” “From” is correct as is.

There is also the question of whether or not Giants should be a possessive. I suppose it doesn’t have to be, if you consider Giants to be an adjective describing the kind of prospect. What kind of prospect is he? He’s a Giants prospect!

Sounds like a punchline, actually…
