Second Half: Stronger or Weaker?
"The second half is really where the strong teams start getting stronger and the weak teams start getting weaker," shortstop Omar Vizquel said. "Teams want to see their prospects, and the stronger teams get the best players from other teams and start separating. It will be interesting what the next move will be here."
-From Henry Schulman's article in the Chronicle.
Omar's been around a long time, and seen many different types of teams, and I think he makes a good (if slightly obvious) point here.
So which way do we think the Post-All-Star Game Giants are going to go?

I hope weaker
Weaker means better draft position. I also want a weaker second half because trading away Durham and Winn will mean weaker. I realize I’m jumbling effect and cause, but I think you get what I’m saying.

Weaker because it means that we’ve traded away veterans and are playing the younger dudes more.

Me too, but...
I still get nervous when I see articles like this.
Let’s just say, hypothetically, we take two of three from Milwaukee. Then, we win 2 or 3 against the Nats. At that point, the last 6 games before the trade deadline would be against Arizona and the Dodgers, the two teams currently ahead of us in the division. I’m just scared that if we get lucky over the next week, we’ll be buyers at the deadline and this season will have gone from difficult, but encouraging, to travesty.

The Giants haven’t had a winning homestand since a 6-3 showing last Aug. 21-29.
That’s pretty amazing. Even the worst of the worst teams usually don’t go 11 months between winning homestands.

I am sick to F’ing death of this “hay Giants can win the division!” bullshit. Can it already. The team is shit, the NL West is shit, but that doesn’t mean the Giants will win anything.

I think that the main tone I have been hearing out of the Giants, though, is not so much “we can win the division” as “we can be better.”
Teams are kind of required by the media to say they can win the division, even if they suck massively, because saying something like “Winning the division isn’t really a realistic goal for us” reveals organizational weakness or something.
So far, I think Bochy has done a good job of trying to balance winning with giving the young guys an extended look. I know there will always be somebody who is upset over who is playing, and how much, but I think the Giants have been doing a good job so far…
by giantfan5 on Jul 17, 2008 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t really see them as being much better than they are though. I mean, haven’t we all been shocked by how much they’re exceeding our expectations?

Yeah
But I think that having a goal of improvement over making the playoffs is a much better strategy for this team at this point, and I kind of feel like they are taking that improvement tone much more than past years. May just be my perception though.

Hovering at the same level of mediocrity
The Giants are at about the appropriate level of suck. The NL West is at the surprising suck level, making the WAY under .500 Giants “contenders”. They have the 5th worst record in the league right now. That’s where they’ve been at for a while now. I think they’ll stay about the same, but I figure Seattle, Colorado and San Diego could all improve. I don’t think the Giants can get weaker than the Nat’s. But the Giants will be drafting high in 2009.
My dream scenario is still for the Dodgers and Arizona to fall apart, allowing the Giants to win the NL West with a .450 winning percentage and a 7-8th spot draft pick. That’s just my little daydream, that lets me see Cain, Lincecum and Sanchez in the playoffs, and Zito with the surprising win over Santana. This daydream isn’t very linked to reality you may have noticed.

The scenario is hilariously stupid. That said, it’ll happen. But in a short series facing Lincecum, Sanchez, and Cain, that is pretty dangerous.

It's kind of counterintuitive
But I don’t think I’d mind seeing the Dodgers win the NL West with a .450 winning percentage.
Think about it… If the winner of the division plays below .500, that’s a team that will get mercilessly mocked by the national media and pretty much all sports fans. Particularly if they’re bounced in the first round (which I’d suspect the Dodgers WOULD be). Nobody will mention or care about who finished second or third, except as a footnote. But the division winner whose record is below .500… Well, that’s a team to be mocked. And I love the notion of all the world mocking the Dodgers.

Actually, let me change my vote to "stronger"
In my fantasy world, we trade Roberts, Aurilia, Durham and Winn. Maybe we cut Vizquel, or someone takes him for free.. Replacing Winn with Schierholtz gives us an offensive boost, while replacing Aurilia with Bowker full time is also an improvement, as Bowker continues to improve offensively and defensively. Ray Durham gets replaced by either Denker or Velez, who magically become league-average hitters and act as adequate, if slightly worse than Durham second basemen. Barry Zito goes nuts in the second half, like August last year except extended through the entire half. We end up dumping him on a poor ne’er-do-well organization named the Seattle Mariners.
We then go on to win the World Series in 2010 behind a rotation of Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Alderson, and some combination of Correia/Lowry/Tanner/Snyder/English/Maday (one of them’s gotta be a solid #5..)

Strasburg
I think Strasburg is a pipe dream (like winning the division). There’s no way we suck more than…well, several teams in the majors (a couple of whom are in our division).
I don’t expect much improvement or otherwise with this team. The thing with this team is, even though the vets are playing decently, the semi-prospects aren’t going to provide much less production. So I see this team being about they have been. They are what they are.
Only 878 games until the end of Zito's contract
by thehavenot on Jul 17, 2008 11:09 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Strasburg is funny in a way. We definitely do have a good shot at him. There is no guarantee he will go #1. There is another full year of HS and College (almost) baseball before the next draft. He may drop a few spots. I think a top 3 pick is very doable, as well.
by positiveuphemism on Jul 17, 2008 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
About the same
Our hitting should suffer as we trade off vets like Durham & Aurilia & hand more ABs to Lewis, Bowker et all. They’ll take their lumps, esp. against LHP. But I honestly think that our pitching is going to improve. If Lincecum & Sanchez hold form, Cain will improve, as will Zito (it’s hard not to) – remember they’re both second half pitchers. I also expect Correia to do better & stay healthy, leading to a lot less Pat Misch in the rotation. The bullpen stays constant.
Thus we, a) trade off vets; b) play younger kids; c) get worse offensively; d) get better hitting – all of which balances out to mediocrity.

I voted about the same.
Even if Sabean gets of the crapper and trades all the vets, we are so mediocre that the Rookies should be able to play the same level of ball. Thanks to Winns injury we will have to wait to unload him. Molina, Durham, Richy A., and even Zito should be kicked out of town. If we get a a middle to low prospect for them then at least we are building the farm system.

I think the team will seem weaker. However, I think the record will be about the same or perhaps slightly stronger.
The last 10 games or so have made the team seem like shit, but before that the team was playing pretty well and in many ways over their heads. I still have memories of Rowand Batting .342 and Molina hitting .320. Compared to those memories of the first half, I think the second half as a whole will feel weaker.
