AAA: Fresno had the second day of its three-day all-star break
The PCL defeated the International League 8-5 in the AAA all-star game
(after trailing 2-0 entering the 9th inning)
PCL: 3B Matt Brown: 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SO
IL: 2B Joey Thurston: 3 for 4, BB, SO
IL: 3B Mike Hessman: 0 for 5, 4 SO
IL: DH Chris Cater: 1 for 5, HR, 2 SO
PCL: LHP Geno Espineli: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K
IL: LHP David Purcey: 2.0 IP, 3 K
The Angels' Brown and the Red Sox' Thurston led each team in hitting. The Tigers' Hessman suffered the sombrero, while the Red Sox' Carter (not to be confused with the A's prospect of the same name and who plays the same position, at least until recently, and who both are ex-D'backs) connected for the game's only homer.
Espineli, the only Grizzly to appear in the game, struck out three of the four batters he faced, throwing 12 of 19 pitches for strikes. Purcey, the starter for the IL, who had two starts for the Blue Jays earlier this season, was the only pitcher to pitch more than an inning, and he retired all six batters he faced on 21 pitches (14 strikes).
AA: Connecticut had the second day of its two-day all-star break.
The North defeated the South 5-3 in the Eastern League all-star game
North: 2B Olmo Rosario: 2 for 2, 2B
North: SS Kyle Haines: 0 for 3, SO
South: CF Greg Golson: 2 for 5, HR, 2 SO, E
South: SS Jason Donald: 2 for 3, 2B, BB, HBP, SB
North: RHP Justin Hedrick 1.0 IP
North: RHP Joe Martinez: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO
The Defenders' Rosario was the North's only hitter with a multiple-hit line. Haines, the Defenders other position player to appear in the game, started at shortstop after playing second base most of this season. The South was led offensively by two Phillies, Golson and Donald, the latter who has had a breakout year hitting .301/.381/.493 in his first year in the upper minors.
Hedrick was the first reliever to appear in the game, pitching a perfect top of the 2nd inning. Martinez, the other Defenders' pitcher to appear in the game, was the only pitcher to pitch more than an inning. He threw 18 of 27 pitches for strikes during a scoreless 5th and 6th innings.
A+: San Jose lost to Lancaster 6-2
San Jose: RF Mike Mooney: 1 for 4, HR
San Jose: C Jackson Williams: 0 for 1, 2 BB, SO, PB
Lancaster: SS Yamaico Navarro: 4 for 4, 2 2B, BB, CS
San Jose: LHP Clayton Tanner: 4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 HB
San Jose: RHP Juan Trinidad: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K--1 HR, 1 HB, 1 IBB, 1 WP
Mooney connected for his 11th HR this year. Williams reached base in two of three trips to the plate, but he also allowed his 5th PB in sixteen Cal League games. The Red Sox' 20-year-old Navarro had an impressive line reaching base five times in his Cal League debut. He had hit .280/.341/.412 in 325 AB in the Sally League.
Tanner made his second start since coming off the DL. In his last four starts, he has allowed 27 H and 12 ER in 13.1 IP. Trinidad allowed an earned run for the first time in over a month. His ERA remains below 2.00.
A-: Augusta defeated Hagerstown 2-0
Augusta: DH Thomas Neal: 1 for 4, HR, 2 SO
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 2 for 3, E
Augusta: LHP Madison Bumgarner: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K--2 PO
Augusta: LHP Andy De La Garza: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Neal connected for his third homer in his last two games, his 11th HR of the year. Villalona was the only GreenJacket with multiple hits, raising his AVG to .248. He committed his 10th error.
Making his seventeen start of the season, all of them on exactly five days' rest, Bumgarner had perhaps his best start of the season, including a new career high with 11 K. He now has more K than IP this season, and a K/BB ratio of 7.75. With two more pickoffs, he faced just two batters over the minimum, as he struck out nearly half (11 of 23) of the batters he faced. De La Garza worked a perfect 9th inning for his 5th save.
ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Vancouver 4-1
Salem-Keizer: RF Francisco Peguero: 2 for 4, 2 SO
Salem-Keizer: 3B Josh Flores: 2 for 4, SO
Salem-Keizer: DH Damon Wright: 0 for 3, 3 SO
Salem-Keizer: RHP Mike Loree: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 IBB, 1 WP
Salem-Keizer: RHP Joe Edens: 3.0 IP, 3 K
Peguero and Flores each had two of the Volcanoes' six hits, all singles, raising their respective AVGs to .381 and .257. Peguero had nine hits over his last four games. Wright managed the hat trick in just three trips to the plate. Edens pitched three perfect innings, in his longest outing of the year (at least in terms of IP).
After three incredible starts, Loree had his least effective start of the year. The 3 ER matched his season total from his previous five starts. His ERA remains an impressive 1.59.

Geno looked great last night in the AAA All Star Game. I got home just in time to catch when he entered the game. One strikeout he got on a pitch that painted the black inside…nasty. Plus he wears the really old school socks, with plenty of stirrup showing.
Mad Bum, great as usual. I hope he ends up in San Jose next year. I can’t wait to see this guy throw.
This isn’t really related but it’s still funny. In the DSL box scores for yesterday, the DSL Dodgers/DSL Red Sox game was listed as postponed due to “tragedy.” I agree, anytime it’s both the Dodgers and the Red Sox, that is a tragedy.
But seriously if anyone can find anything on that, I’m curious to know what happened.

Mad Bum indeed!
Picking guys off. Not walking anybody. Striking people out. This guy is a Giant?

Geno
Can’t adopt him, I might be related to the dude. ha. The kid was awesome last night.
And MadBum must have a hell of a pick off move. Like BVCE said, he better be in SJ next season. Angel raising his avg and errors at the same time. Yikes. Giants management should think about flying JT to Augusta and tutor the kid more in D.
Can’t wait for Angel and Rafael to be on the same field together!

Hmm, I thought they cracked down on that after 9/11.

I don’t get the “Angel is fat” talk. After seeing him in the futures game, he’s got a big frame and huge butt. You can do all the pilates in the world, that rear end aint doing nothing but walk away.
I think his body projects as Frank Thomas-esque. Big, sure, but not fat.

If power hitting comes from the core and thigh/butt areas, then Angel is set. I’ve only seen like five photographs of the guy and yes, he is not omg fat. Pablo Sandoval is omg fatter than Angel. The way people talk I was expecting to see a Prince Fielder type round fellow.

The guys on the BA podcast were laughing about seeing Villalona and Sandoval next to each other. “Sandoval made Big V look like Little V” was the most telling comment. But they also said in person Angel looked much fitter than they’d been led to believe.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
The Mad Bum
Mad Bum, great as usual. I hope he ends up in San Jose next year. I can’t wait to see this guy throw.
Is he not going to head to SJ this year? If so, why not? Do the Giants have some plan laid out?
Neglectful father of David Quinowski
I think he could get to SJ this year but the Giants can move him slow if they want. They also probably know if he’s just beating guys on the heat or if he’s actually throwing breaking stuff. I’ve heard good reports that he is indeed throwing breaking stuff now and then.
If he’s being fast tracked he might skip advanced A. Nothing has been said about him skipping a level or his plan for advancement. Just throwing a thought out there. Don’t worry!

Ahhh, I didn’t even consider it that way. That would be aggressive and interesting.

Geno
was amazing. Yes, guys were striking out left and right in this game, but Geno just rocked.
The announcers loved him too. Or, I think they did… Eduardo Perez seems to call every pitch “devastating,” so it’s hard to tell. Wonder what it’s like grocery shopping with him (“The endives—just devastating!!”)

Something needs to be done about the two Chris Carters. It’s even more confusing than the two Chris Youngs.
wow, that is unusual, Bumgarner always gets 5 actual rest days. He won’t get that in the majors. So they are using a 6 man rotation or spot starters something.
I got nothing against it, let the big guy-and maybe still growing-have more time to heal up after a start. Does that make MadBum not a gamer?

Yeah I’m officially sick of that.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
it jumped the shark about 2 days ago.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

it took off way more than I was expecting it to, I do apologize. :(
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Yes, the GreenJackets have pretty much been using a six-man rotation all year. But if the teams gets an off-day (scheduled or rainout), I think they have the extra starter make a spot appearance out of the bullpen.
It looks like they have also been going towards a six-man rotation in San Jose during the second half. It’s kinda hard to figure out with the injuries to Pucetas and Tanner how that rotation stacks up over a longer period of time.
The Giants also pitch their starters in the AZL on five days rest consistently. They have a five-man rotation (I think), but the team has an off-day every fifth day.

Slightly OT
Joey Thurston is still around! And playing in the AAA all-star game? Wow.
He was the second best baseball player to come out of Vallejo. Just to show the gap between him and the best, he was a high-school team-mate of CC Sabathia. He’s actually a year older.
But it looks like he’s doing good. Unfortunately he’s blocked in Boston.
Oh and woo! Bumgarner!
Only 878 games until the end of Zito's contract
I always love the AAA All-Star game
it’s such an eclectic mix of stud prospects, career minor leaguers, and former MLB players that should have hung it up years ago

Williams has had pass balls and errors above the acceptable or expected level in Salem, Augusta and now SJ. He has no power with the bat but continues to be the everyday player at every level he has been in.
He is a bonus baby and maybe that has something to do with it. Who ever made the decission to pick him so high in the draft is making sure he has every opportunity to make it so they don’t look bad. And when you do this you are not putting the best 9 players on the field and you loose more games.
I am sure it is out of Deckers hands.
Williams
Having watched him last year for 30+ games in SK I can assure you that he definitely has trouble handling balls in the dirt. Great arm, gets the throw off quick but I’d sure like to see him block the ball better.
And for the record, Decker is the one that pushed to pick him.
Adopted father of Brian Bocock, Brad Boyer, Sharlon Schoop, Shane Jordan and Jeremiah Luster.
I would need more insite on Decker being the one to push drafting Williams. That wasn't my point anyway.
At this level it shouldn’t take a catcher much time in the pen to see a pitchers stuff. I understand getting crossed up but even then a you are usually able to get a glove on it and knock it down. All I am saying is that if this is the Giants idea of a excellent defensive catcher then they need to reevaluate their scoutting criteria. He has been a everyday starter and up till recently hasn’t hit his weight and can’t catch.
I can’t believe people are actually criticizing Williams for fucking passed balls. You have no way of knowing whether the pitches that got by him were scored incorrectly, or if he was simply crossed up. Its A ball for Christ’s sake! If those things are happening when he makes the major leagues, then you have something to worry about. But until then calm the hell down.
So what can we criticize him for?

Mad Bum's mechanics
not sure if anyone saw this piece on Mad Bum and TimA in Baseball America (subscription required), but this part in particular interested me:
With Bumgarner, the Giants “changed my whole windup,” according to the lefty, but the early returns weren’t so good. After allowing 10 runs in 11 innings through his first three starts, Bumgarner reverted to his old windup and immediately dominated. In his next 12 starts, Bumgarner had only one start in which he allowed more than one earned run (he allowed two in six innings at Greenville), including seven scoreless outings.
so much for knowing how to develop pitchers. The article also says that the Giants tweaked TimA’s mechanics, though in that case it was just getting him to throw from the windup more because he was exclusively a stretch pitcher in high school.
the article is pretty informative. It elaborates that TimA has 2 plus pitches and is working on his change up, and that Mad Bum scrapped his curve for a slider that isn’t quite fully developed yet.
