Schierholtz... snubbed!

The U.S. Olympic team was just announced, and Nate Schierholtz will not be travelling to Beijing as origionally expected. I guess that extremely poor futures game appearance did nothing to help his cause. Perhaps, however, the Giants prevented Schierholtz from going, which is possible.

On another note, after just a quick look at the roster, it appears as if there will be only one Giants prospect on the Olympic roster (Gino Espineli)... so much for organizational strength! (From a U.S. standpoint, at least)

Tell me more about this Schierholtz-at-third-base idea. I thought he was an outfielder!

Turns out he’s played some SS/3B, back in the day. Most of us wonder why he wasn’t given a longer leash to stay at 3B in the minors, but don’t post that too often – there’s some guy around here who goes absolutely ballistic when you try to bring that up.

I don't get it.

This “at best” gag - which I have to say just gets funnier and funnier, especially the 85th time in one day - is this a clever pop-culture reference? My guess is a) Seinfeld b) Flight of the Conchords c) a video game. Sigh. I feel old.

It's from one of the

“Matt-Cain-Isn’t-As-Good-As-We-Thought He-Was-He’s-A-Third-Starter-At-Best” fanposts from a few weeks ago.

We really need to create a Wiki with all the McCoven inside references. I nominate Natto to do it.

I think it has something to do with Matt Cain

As in, some people feel that Cain is a third starter at best.

That was the first time I ever participated in this particular joke. I felt it was funny to actually reference the joke as third at best. Most likely I was wrong.

I hope that by forcing you to explain the joke...

I’ve taken all the fun out of it for everyone. It won’t be funny again until it’s somehow combined with Abbott & Costello’s “Who’s on First.” Get to it, comedians.

Haven’t been paying attention during your time here, Lefty? You’ve been around long enough to know that here at McCovey Chronicles we don’t have the fun taken out of anything by others. We beat the fun out of things through repetition until whatever it is lies limp on the floor, completely fun-less.

I just saw the blurb on Brew Crew Ball and commented over there on A) my surprise that Nate did not make it, if any Giants were to make it, and 2) Geno Espineli?! I mean Espineli is not a bad choice at all but that was a definite surprise decision.

Gah, Nate has to feel like he’s been kicked in the nuts all season.

Yes, you’re right that “farthest” would be preferred…. BUT, none of you geniuses noticed that it was actually incorrect. Earth is the third nearest planet. I’m disgusted with all three of you.
