Dallas?McPherson...

Long time lurker but first time poster.  This place is great and I come here every morning to read the Minor Lines.

About a week ago I was explaining to my wife why I always walked away from the TV or why I would be yelling whenever Jose Castillo came up to bat. I remember back in the Spring there were a number of people who were begging for Dallas McPherson to be signed (and I was one of them, just not here on MC).   Not sure if you guys have seen his stats this year, but he is hitting  .297/.406/.682 with an OPS of 1.088.  He has 32 HRs in 86 games, and he homered in 7 straight games recently.  He still strikes out a ton (every 2.72 ABs) and I know that the ballpark that he plays in is a ridiculous hitters park, but he is on pace for almost 60 HR if he keeps up this pace.  It's possible he's nothing more than a AAAA player, but compared to our possible AAAA player (Schierholtz), I'd take McPherson's numbers everyday.

Welcome!

IIRC McPherson signed with Florida because he wanted to be closer to home. I believe we had an offer out for him, but he chose the Marlins instead.

I’d rather have given him a chance than Castillo, but man, do McPherson’s numbers translate badly from Albuquerque.

His MLE’s

.206/.307/.419
87 G, 301 AB, 43 R, 62 H, 9 2B, 2 3B, 17 HR, 40 RBI, 43 BB, 147 K, 2 HP, 7 SB, 4 CS, 0 SH, 3 SF

Albuquerque’s 3-year park factor is at 1.17, making it the most hitter friendly park in the minors.

Baseball Prospectus has a much more favorable translation: .223/.325/.497. That’s good for a .276 EQA.

by Dan from NM on Jul 16, 2008 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m using Dan Szymborski’s zMLE worksheets (a fantastic tool) from BBTF for my MLE’s.

Were does BP have their translations at? I’m a subscriber but I couldn’t’ find them off hand. I’m skeptical of his K-rate in the minors.

by xanthan on Jul 16, 2008 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/minoreqa.php

Just eyeballing them, I’ve always felt like BP’s translations were too generous and Szymborski’s were too low.

At any rate, with someone who strikes out as much as McPherson, he’s going to occasionally hit under .200 for months at a time, which makes it hard to keep him in the lineup.

by Evan on Jul 16, 2008 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Minorleague Splits has a MLE Tool (not sure how accurate it is, I’ve never played with it) but it’s giving McPherson a translation of .222/.315/.476 which is more favorable than the zMLE’s but still not very good.

For those wondering, he’d K 121 times under this translation. The BP translation seems optimistic to me, especially his slugging.

I know you said possible AAAA

but I don’t want to hear anything about AAAA for Nate until he’s had some serious mlb playing time. We’ve heard it all before – doesn’t walk, long swing, etc. Well, players that rarely walk can still be useful, and IIRC, Dustin Pedroia was also said to have a long swing. (I know K’s are very different, but still).

Sorry for overreacting, but I’ve just heard some Nate hating recently, and I don’t think it’s warranted right now.

Nate's Swing

It’s never looked long to me. Maybe he takes some bad hacks but I would say his swing might be a tad shorter than average. He does have a little bit of a hand hitch that can create holes in his swing, but other than BP’s recent pooh-poohing of him Nate’s swing doesn’t look long.

Nate really only has one big problem as a hitter. He has a bad sense of the strike zone. So bad that it could keep him from being a big leaguer.

by Change Up on Jul 15, 2008 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

especially since the world is telling him to hack more. Swing away at pitches you think you can drive, we say. Don’t just dink them for singles. have more than a one approach at the plate. play third. things like that.

Ya Castillo feels like a total black hole to me ( insert your own sexual joke here ) and I would have rather had Mcpherson, but oh well. I have been thinking lately, which can be dangerous, but what if we made a push to pick up Adrian Beltre, and signed Richie Sexson. Now I know Sexson is a club house cancer, but he can hit the day lights out of the ball and can pick at first kind of. I am not sure what it would take to get Beltre but I do know that he would be a total upgrade over Castillo at third. These are just my thoughts. But maybe the Mariners take Wynn from us Bowker can move to right so Sexson can play first.

by oldjacket on Jul 16, 2008 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Beltre’s glove is much better, and his road stats this year are .296/.366/.475. Hitting righty at Safeco is about as difficult as hitting lefty at our field. Which (though I probably shouldn’t admit this) is one reason I wouldn’t particularly mind taking on Richie Sexson.

by Evan on Jul 16, 2008 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

that’s pretty good. The Aurillo platoon is hitting .265/.320/.419. Still I wouldn’t give up anything good for half a season of Beltre.

you can't block the Bocock

by oldjacket on Jul 16, 2008 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

It would be a year and a half, since he’s under contract for 2009 as well.

I made the case a while back for trading a couple of second-tier pitching prospects for Beltre. It’s not likely that we’ll be contending next year, but having a solid third baseman would put us in much better position just in case lightning strikes. And of course he wouldn’t be blocking anyone.

by Evan on Jul 16, 2008 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I really don’t think this is a bad idea, considering what he did in his last contract year for Dodgerrhea. Also, he has above average defense and would be a definite upgrade offensively. Unfortunately, I’m sure it would take more than more than a couple second-tier pitching prospects to get him—although we could potentially get those back by trading him again next year if he has value or draft picks if he were to sign elsewhere after his contract.

by Fresburg on Jul 16, 2008 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Depends on the new Mariners management. They may be eager to cut costs, clean house, and get rid of the most obvious reminders of the old regime. I suspect they’d be willing to trade him for not much, but the Twins (for instance) should probably beat any Giants offer.

Lefty Hitter + Mays Field - Barry Bonds = Fail

There have been only 2 multiple home run games by a visiting player at Mays in the last 3.5 seasons. (James Loney and Luis Gonzalez in 2007. Brad Hennessey served up the second tater both times. Go figure…)

The only other players to do it as visitors: Adam Dunn and Rob Mackowiak in 2004.

The only other player to do it as Giant: J.T. Snow, 2000 and 2001, once each year.

Eh

I think the McPherson idea is pretty good, assuming that the Marlins aren’t asking anything much for him.

Yes, I’m aware that Albuquerque is an extreme hitter’s park in a hitter’s league. And yes, I’m aware that McPherson has spent pretty much his entire minor league career in (very) hitter friendly environments,The Ks are an issue, but at least he’s improved his walk rate.

Also, Bpro have his translated minor league stats at a 276 EQA. Translated minor league stats with an ageing curve applied, 271 EQA. 260 is average. HIs major league numbers aren’t great, but a 96 OPS+ is hardly a disaster. Maybe he turns into a Russ Branyan type player. That has some value.

After all, he would be blocking Luis Castillo.

by rfloh on Jul 16, 2008 11:13 AM PDT reply actions

How is this any different from a young Pedro Feliz minus the reliable defense?

by Rusty the Robot on Jul 16, 2008 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Huh?

Have you looked at Feliz’ stats in the minors? Except for that one year in 2000, Feliz minor league stats are very poor. Even with that year, his career OPS in the minors is 727. McPherson’s OPS in the minors is 975. And Feliz played in the same hitter’s leagues too: PCL, Texas, CAL.

If by young Feliz, you’re referring to that 1 1/2 season spell in 2003-2004 when Feliz was a 100 OPS+ hitter, Feliz couldn’t keep that up. If he could, he would be have been a star.

Also, what is the problem with trying him, assuming he isn’t going to cost anything worthwhile? At worst, he busts, Luis Castillo loses some playing time. Big deal. It isn’t as if there’s some hotshot 3b prospect in the minors, or on the MLB roster. Neither Fred Lewis, nor John Bowker, nor Nate Schierholtz can play 3b.

More optimistically, he turns into Russ Branyan, a 100-110 OPS+ hitter. Which isn’t great, but has value as long as he is cheap. Look at some of the crap MLB teams are using at DH, 1b, or even corner OF this season. Not every player on a good team needs to be a star.
