Damn the All-Star Game... and its four day break!

My favorite thing about baseball is that games are played nearly every day, and I can flip on the TV and watch my favorite team. Now I have to wait until Friday before I can see the Cain vs. Sabathia matchup!? GRR, I say! What am I gonna DO!?!

I mean I guess the All Star Game is fun and all, but it's not as cool if you only have a pitcher from your fav. team that will pitch for one inning max, and a closer that will probably only pitch one inning as well. Too bad we aren't the Cubs or the Red Sox huh?

(Lincecum: You can be in my Fave 5.)

i know, right? ;)

Nationals will be flying in from Atlanta from their 1:05PM (Eastern Time) game. They’ll gain 3 hours from flying to the west coast anyway! lol =)

I actually don’t mind the break, for a few reasons. My main one right now is me nearly failing statistics, and needing extra time to cram and study to bring up my grade. I have two exams in the next two weeks and I’m really stressing out about it.

Plus there’s always a buffet of minor league baseball to follow. I’m strange in that I can look at a minor league boxscore and feel satisfied that somewhere, somehow, there was baseball for me. And it was good.

ahh I see.. I would follow minor league games, but… I don’t get them on TV. And… EWW, summer school.

Summer school is evil. I’m eternally a moron for thinking that stats would be a good choice to knock out over the summer.

Sometimes I miss school, but when I remember cramming for tests, I don’t miss it so much.

Good luck with STATS, I always enjoyed that class.

I hate your stats computer. I hate stats. Fuck Z. I hate you, Z. You exist only to make me cry.

This also works well in a baseball context.

Now see I get the pie chart. Z? Anything with Z is automatic fail for me. Which is just about everything in stats.

Oh god. . .

Memories of a 7 o’clock in the morning stat class, wtih a prof who gave a quiz FIRST F*#&$!@& THING in the morning, just to make sure you made it on time, then heading to Kragen to sling auto parts to idiot shops, then back to class after work for econ for 3 hours, dreaming about standard deviations of auto parts in the stream of commerce and shit. . .

But hey, when you finish, when you ring that bell, there’s nothing like it. . . keep pushing and you’ll be fine.

eeewww, I had stats the first thing in the morning too. I usually slept through at least 15 minutes of the class. He too enjoyed those damn quizzes. Still got an A+ ; ) for the semester.

I’m alright with the break, but I don’t even get to watch the All-Star game because I have class tonight. I always seem to end up with a night class on Tuesday nights during Summer quarters. :(

Sometimes I wish baseball would follow football's suit

and play the AS game after the WS. No one really cares about it THAT much, and having it decide the home field advantage is ridiculous. It forces a week long break into our precious 162 game season, I don’t give a crap about it, and if it were after the season, those that watched it and cared about it could see it, and those of us who are Giants fans and stopped watching baseball in September could get on with our lives.

The All-Star game is pretty much kaput because:

1 – Free agency
2 – Interleague play

To combat this it has been made worse by

A – This time it counts (but not all the players care)
B – All-Star festivities (which are interesting but detract from the game in a way)

Things are not likely to change, other than the “it counts” thing. As long as it pulls in $$$$ why would the people who are pocketing that $$$$ want to change?

by positiveuphemism on Jul 15, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

The only real allure of the AS Game in past years for me is that you could see great players from each league face off. Watching Bonds against AL pitching, for example…. wonderful.

But now, because of both the prevalence of FA as well as interleague, you’ve seen it all already.

Baseball is (was) unique in that the leagues did not play each other. You could have been one of the top pitchers in the AL over the last 15 years and never faced Barry Bonds. If and when it came around in either an All-Star game or a Word Series the two of you faced off, it was something special. Interesting, at least.

Now it’s just another at bat, nothing really special to it at all.

Lame.

I didn’t miss baseball so much yesterday, but today here I am, out sick from work, miserable, and thoroughly bored. I need a Giants game to complete the horribleness of today, dammit.

by jcb9 on Jul 15, 2008 3:22 PM PDT reply actions

reasons i like the all star game how it currently is played

1. it gives the players time to re-energize and probably spend some time with their family.

2. the first game back after the break feels like opening day.

3. gives us a definitive break to measure stats.

4. i like shiny things.

Dodgers fans eat their young.

by redhornet78 on Jul 15, 2008 3:52 PM PDT reply actions

I fucking hate the all star break. (see all star break?? you made me use foul language) No matter how bad your team is, and how many games your team loses, it’s all forgotten by the next day because you’re playing again. But what do we have now?? Four days to think about our 1-5 stinking road trip and the season in general. Usually I plan my family vacation for the all star break week so I don’t miss that much baseball, but this year I didn’t because I knew we weren’t contenders. The only good thing about it is that I get to bed with my wife at a normal time, so for one week she’s not pissed off at me.
