Do we WANT Timmy and/or Brian to pitch in the ASG?

Star-divide

My first fanpost on this new format, so forgive me if I screw something up.

Simple question - do we want The Enchanter and The Non-Beach Boy to show their wares in the All-Star Game, or would we rather have them rest up and avoid the alleged Giants All-Star Pitcher Curse that affected the likes of Atlee Hammaker, Jeff Brantley, John Burkett, and Shawn Estes (but didn't seem to affect Vida Blue or Mike Krukow)?

After 114 pitches, I’d prefer Tim rest. I doubt he’ll get hurt, but the risk isn’t worth it. I know they say he’d be throwing today anyway, but that’s not a game situation where he’s likely to be amped up.

Wilson, absolutely. I’m trying to figure out which AL’er I’d like to see on his butt avoiding a 100 mph FB.

I’d like to see Timmy pitch an inning. ONE INNING. If throwing 10-15 pitches in an All-Star game (on what is his normal throwing day between starts anyway) is going to do long-term damage to the kid, then we should forget about ever hoping to see him in a pennant race a few years down the line. Since he’s not starting, there’s no expectation he “needs” to go at least a couple innings.

Of course, if Clint Hurdle misuses him for shits and giggles, I’ll organize the torches-and-pitchforks caravan to Denver.

I don’t see how being prudent now with your 24-year-old franchise player who just threw 114 pitches (and eight innings, which means extra lots of warm-up throws) by keeping out of a meaningless exhibition game precludes us from ever hoping to see him in a pennant race a few years down the line.

Proud adoptive father of Rafael Rodriguez. Hit well soon, son!

by Goofus on Jul 14, 2008 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I just think 10-15 pitches, even adrenaline-filled ones during a big game on national TV, is unlikely to do long-term damage to his arm (as opposed to, say, regularly running him out for 110+ pitches a start and having him throw 220 innings this year). If it likely to do damage, then he’s probably pretty fragile (which we all seem to agree/hope he isn’t).

Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.

by Kitspool on Jul 14, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe ALL 24 year-old arms should be thought of as “fragile” and should be treated as such. There’s just too much evidence that too many pitches (and especially) innings is likely to lead to arm damage in guys that reach the bigs early. I believe the NPA calls it the Dwight Gooden Prinicple.

I didn’t understand Cain’s obsession with getting to 200 innings last season, not did I approve.

Proud adoptive father of Rafael Rodriguez. Hit well soon, son!

by Goofus on Jul 14, 2008 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

That principle is exactly why I’m less concerned about one inning in mid-July (followed by four days rest, mind you) than I am about how the Giants will handle Lincecum’s total IP for the season as we approach September. Will they shut him down at 200 innings or so (which I think they should), or will they let him go to 215-225 innings if it means the difference between “20 wins and a Cy Young Award or not”?

Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.

by Kitspool on Jul 14, 2008 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

if he has a legit shot at a cy young, you have to give him innings or else he may hate the franchise and want out. if his ERA balloons to like 3.3 and moves all the way down to 3rd in K’s, shut him down. otherwise hes gotta pitch, this could be a special year

just curious

why ESPECIALLY innings? IMO, throwing 110 pitches in 5 innings, with ~60-70 of them being high stress out of the stretch is WAY worse than throwing 110 in 8 innings, with only about 30-35 being high stress.

by Viliphied on Jul 14, 2008 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

From what I remember, NPA’s research showed more of a correalation between innings and injuries. Part of it might have to do with additional warm-up pitches and I think most of it has to do with getting heated up, cooling down, heatling up, cooling down for every inning pitched.

Proud adoptive father of Rafael Rodriguez. Hit well soon, son!

by Goofus on Jul 14, 2008 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe it’s ESPECIALLY innings because that’s what’s been counted and compiled. I don’t there has been any satisfactory study done regarding pitch counts.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Jul 14, 2008 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Meant to add…

To hear Tom Hourse talk, the arm-stress in the stretch should be no different than out of the windup. Most pitchers feel more comfortable out of the windup because they learn in the windup and practice it more, but the movement that’s added in the windup simply gets the pitcher to leg-lft in a different way but does not create any energy that transalte into velocity.

Proud adoptive father of Rafael Rodriguez. Hit well soon, son!

I say no. Both just threw a lot. The All-Star Game is great and all but I don’t want more of the Giants ASG curse.

BTW, maybe the reason why Vida Blue and Krukow weren’t effected by the curse is because they weren’t homegrown Giants.

Although, Rick Reuschel wasn’t homegrown, and he got lit up pretty good. I don’t think that home run Bo Jackson hit off him has even landed yet.

Oh Timmeh I loves you. Plus did he really get an RBI triple yesterday? I missed most of the game.

Clint Hurdle makes no guarantees, also from today’s Chronicle: National League All-Star manager Clint Hurdle said that Milwaukee pitcher Ben Sheets will start Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Yankee stadium, and he wouldn’t say whether Giants ace Tim Lincecum would appear in relief.

“I can’t answer that,” Hurdle said. “I’ll give him every opportunity. There are nine innings and I’ve got 12 pitchers. If it only goes nine, there’s a good chance some guys won’t pitch.”

I called Hurdle “Clide” by accident in my personal blog and laughed and kept it like that anyway. He’s a dipshit but I hope he keeps Tim out of it.
