First Half Fun Facts
Giants starters lead the NL with 495 strikeouts.
The Big 3 of Timmeh, Matteh and Durteh tallied 367 Ks as starters, more than in all starts by pitchers for Florida, Washington, Colorado, St. Louis or Pittsburgh.
Giants starters also lead the league with 249 walks, but had a league-low 13 HBP. (Missing away? Nibbling? Failure to challenge hitters inside?)
Giants starters yielded only 53 Home Runs, 2nd lowest in the leasgue.
The Big 3 had as many wins as starters as all starters for San Diego (23) and more than Pittsburgh and Washington.
The Big 3 all placed in the top 6 on the list of NL first half strikeout leaders. (Hasn't happened in the NL at least since 1999, then I got bored.)

Here are some sad facts...
26th worst record, 24th wost run differential, 27th in Runs scored, 18th in ERA, 16th in Stater’s ERA (Zito-Corriea-Misch not helping this), 23rd in Bullpen ERA, 25th in defensive efficiency. The only stats where we rank in the upper-half of baseball are 2B, 3B, SB, Runs Allowed (13th) and Strikeouts induced (1st). Not one player is in the top 10 at his position in OPS and only Rowand has an OPS over .800 (.804).
The defensive efficiency stat I saw on Baseball Prospectus surprised me because we’ve gotten + defense out of SS and all 3 outfield spots. But our 2nd base combination of Durham-Velez-Denker has been brutal, Castillo’s been erratic and Bowker is really green. How is Molina’s defense, I can’t find a solid measurement for catchers?

Average age of a Giants’ at bat this year: 30.26
That is ((“Player Age” x “Player at Bats”) + (“Player Age” x “Player at Bats”) + ...) / Total at Bats
That includes pitchers, who skew younger.
Totally useless. But, you know, whatever.

Why not PA?
instead of AB?

Because it was 2:30 in the morning, I was on yahoo, and the at bats column was closer to the player name (and thus less difficult to accurately track).
PA would have certainly been better.

This may be what has irked me the most about this entire half season for the giants…followed up in a close second by all the bizarre and inexplicable callups.

Call-ups
Given the talent level in the upper minors, what did you expect? No-brainer callups?

I have to say
I kinda agree with this. The “throw shit at the wall and see what sticks” approach in many ways may have just been a way to rapidly sift through the until recently neglected farm to discover what was worth keeping.
I don’t dislike it as much as most here do.

I wouldn’t be opposed to "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks". What bothers me is “call shit up from Double A, play shit sporadically and haphazardly so that shit can’t get into any sort of rhythm, then send shit back down and call up Notgardo.”
Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.
So you’re saying their taking shit, mixing it vigorously with water, and then throwing it at a tefflon wall to see what sticks?

Pitches Per Inning
Cain: 16.4
Lincecum: 16.2
Sanchez: 17.4
Zito: 18.8
Correia: 16.7
Wilson: 19.3
Walker: 15.9
Organizational Philosophy?
When we aren’t nibbling, it’s because we are throwing 0-2 meatballs.
Eugeniooooooo!!!!
Cain is only third best in PPI. Like we needed more proof that he’s a #3 pitcher at best.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
FWIW
Cain is ranked, by Fangraphs, as the 45th best starting pitcher in the ML by WPA.
That officially makes him good enough to be a #2 :)

I don't like WPA
Cain is 24th in FIP. He’s a #1.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
I agree with this. FIP is more stable than WPA.
Doesn’t WPA hold Matt Cain responsible for the dastardly defensive doings of Ray Durham, and for Fred Lewis choosing not to catch the ball with two hands?
you can't block the Bocock
Yeah, probably.

Just wondering, but does anyone know why Sanchez’s nickname is “dirty”? I mean, unless it means what I’m thinking it means.. then, lol.
If my head is full of white hairs by the end of this season.. I blame Brian Wilson. (I'm only 22, dammit!)

Yeah it’s gross, but it can also be taken as “wow that’s some filthy stuff he’s throwing.” It’s funny when Grant makes the poopface graphics for the site whenever Jonathan starts, though.

I will throw in a serious comment:
the HBP stat is interesting, and as I sit back and think about it I would concur the the starting 3 have really opted to go outside to hitters on 0-2 and 1-2 counts. This is just my unquantified observation, but this stat backs it up.
I wonder why – throw the heat inside guys, break some bats and back em up.
Eugeniooooooo!!!!
Puzzles me too
Molina, 23 HBP, 265 non-IBB (1:11.5)
Holm, 7 HBP, 75 non-IBB (1:10.7)
Alfonzo, 2 HBP, 10 non-IBB (1:5)
Starters, 13 HBP, 234 non-IBB (1:18)
Blowpen, 19 HBP, 116 non-IBB (1:6.1)
So, it’s not catcher-specific although it could still be an organizational philosophy on game-calling. Wondering if it’s not some reflection of the “pitch to contact:” idea. If you’re going to try to let the bad guys put the bat on the ball, away and down is the place to do it. Keeps the ball in the yard…
And FYI, The Lynx is tied for second in the league with 11 wild pitches, Durty is tied for 6th.

If your target is down and away
And you miss, its likely to end up in the dirt.
Target up and in missing is likely to end up over the plate.
It’s a lot harder to drive a mistake in the dirt over the fence.
Might have something to do with the lowest # of HR in the league (altho we seem to have a propensity towards giving up no-namer HR’s on 0-2 counts)
Who wants to take a look at 0-2 and 1-2 locations from durty caincecum using pitch/Fx?

Since this is a fun facts thread
Omar Vizquel 151 ABs14 runs
Rich Aurilla 249 ABs 17 runs
Manny Burriss 112 ABs 16 runs (solid 7 SBs as well)
More ABs for Manny please!
Lince-"cum"
I called his change a “cumball”. Gross and terrible I know, but good thing no one around here judges people on their handle…right?
Well it is a pretty nasty changeup, and the concept of smearing a baseball with semen and throwing it at someone is also nasty, so it works for me.
