Cain to Start First Game After Break
CHICAGO -- Matt Cain, not All-Star right-hander Tim Lincecum, will move to the front of the Giants' starting rotation following the All-Star break, manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday.
Cain will start Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers, followed by left-hander Jonathan Sanchez on Saturday and Lincecum on Sunday. After Monday's scheduled off-day, left-hander Barry Zito and right-hander Kevin Correia will pitch Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, against the Washington Nationals.
Apparently Bochy wants to give Lincecum some extra days off, especially since he might pitch in the All-Star Game. I guess nobody told him Cain's a #3 starter at best. (AT BEST!).

So Zito will have had nearly two weeks off and Correia 10 days off. I hope it helps their performances.

The best part is that I have tickets to games on the 4th, 5th and 6th of August. If the Giants don’t skip any starter I get Cain on the 4th, Sanchez on the 5th and Lincecum on the 6th. Yay.

my first time back in SF with the Giants in town in 3 years, and I’m going to be in the park july 24th and 26th, which shapes up as … Cain and Lincecum? It will make me very happy if that is the case. Even happier than getting to a victory dance in front of a bunch of cubs fans at a family outing out here in Chicago.

Wise
This is wise. The move separates the two lefties and keeps Matt and Tim separated. It also gives Tim some needed rest. He may pitch a single inning on Tuesday, which is his normal day to throw anyway. Regardless, pitching again on Sunday rather than Friday is a good idea, as Tim leads the Giants in innings pitched and has thrown a substantial number of pitches pre-All-Star game for a pitcher under 25.
I believe it also places Tim in a position where he would have one fewer start in the second half than Cain and Sanchez unless the Giants skip someone in the rotation as the season continues. That’s probably not a bad idea, either.
I suspect Tim will wind up with 33 starts and probably about 210-215 innings. Last year Matt Cain pitched 200 innings, and he will likely reach about 215-220 this season. Given that Tim came up a year and a half later than Matt and thus would ordinarily be behind in building up his innings, 210-215 this season would seem to be more than enough.
It’s not that Tim couldn’t pitch more. But why waste him in a meaningless season?

How many innings for Sanchez
How many innings can SF expect out of Jonathan Sanchez in 2008? Would not be surprised if SF skipped a few of his starts to limit his 2008 innings. A September call-up might take a couple of Sanchez starts?
by wilriv21 on Jul 13, 2008 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
who would they call up?
I don’t see any prospects doing anything in AA or AAA.
Hennessey? Pereira?
I could be wrong—someone please correct me if I am.

Patrick Misch? Or maybe somebody from Double A?
by superk1ng on Jul 13, 2008 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sanchez
2006: 95 innings pitched
2007: 76 innings pitched
2008: 111 innings pitched
How many innings can a pitcher safely/wisely add per season?
Possible pitchers? Patrick Misch, a healthy Noah Lowry, Palmer, Hennessey etc. It sounds very logical to have another pitcher(s) start some games in place of Jonathan Sanchez as the season progresses.
by wilriv21 on Jul 13, 2008 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
A healthy Noah Lowry isn’t going to happen this year. He’s still not throwing and they aren’t even going to make a decision with him until after the ASB.
Misch is a candidate, Hennessey has no business starting the majors. Maybe Matt Palmer if they need a warm body to pitch some innings.

Apparently Bochy wants to give Lincecum some extra days off
It also preserves the RLRLR rotation, which I think probably had more to do for Bochy about giving Tim teh extra day than actually resting him.

I have no idea why going “RLRLR” is important to the rotation. I can see mixing soft-tosser with hard throwers to mess up timing, though.

If Lowry were healthy and at full ability, would the Giants actually pen three lefties into the rotation?

nah, they’d stick with Correia.
if misch wasn’t so much suck in AAA right now, I bet they’d pen three lefties in the rotation.

The Giants should just shut down their young studs right after 200 IP. Then put in scrubs and tank for the last month of the season, while giving some PT to young kids.

i hate to say it
but we really need to give lincecum a fair shot at a cy young.. shutting him down early wouldnt do it. if we did screw him out of a cy young the likelyhood he resigns with us would probably go down.

a rockstar. Did you see Cubs fan’s reaction to Rags visiting the mound in the 8th, they nearly shit themselves at the ‘no more Lincecum’ prospect. We have got to let this kid do whatever the hell he wants, as he has earned it. There is no way the Giants should get this lucky, so nurture, nestle, and hold it dear to your heart.
