Giants sign top Dominican outfielder 16 yr old Rafael Rodriguez
for $2.55 million
It wasn’t a closely kept secret that the Giants would lavish money on Dominican outfielder Rafael Rodriguez, and sure enough, on his 16th birthday Sunday, they made the official announcement that they had signed him. According to the agent, it’s a $2.55 million signing bonus, which exceeds the previous club record for an international free agent — $2.1 million to Angel Villalona in 2006.
Rodriguez has been compared to Vlad Guerrero.............

Nice.
Now, sign the top picks from the ‘08 draft, and the Giants will finally have something like a real farm system.

I imagine that will set the sights of our top four american prospects a bit higher in their bonus demands. So, let the Giants get them signed and into our minor league system.

It’s nice that John Barr picks the prospects out and Sabean is the go-between to the money men.
It’s like John Barr is the Man With the Golden Touch and Sabean is the monkey butler…with Ned Colletti playing the role of Thatcher, Corky Thatcher…Agent -000.

he didn’t look that fat when I saw him today in the Futures game. I mean he could stand to lose some weight, but if I hadn’t seen him called fat about a thousand times on this board, it would have never occured to me. By the way, he made a beautiful defensive play to end the game, and although he did nothing at the plate, he showed a quick bat.

He looked impressive that’s for sure. Especially around 1B, for a kid who just learned how to play over there, he looked very good. And even at the plate, though he struck out and hit a come backer, he showed an impressive approach at the plate.

Great news!
The signing of Rodriguez is great news, as is the Giants’ willingness to put up a new franchise bonus record to do so.
Buster Posey likely will soon be blowing that record way, however.

Least surprising description available
The Gigantes get a new player, and the first thing scouts and writers want to do is slap a label on him. The punchcard of Rafael Rodriguez which describes: Tall, Dominican, Outfielder will without exception result the name Vladimir Guerrero just as any melanin-deprived forward/ guard/ center with even a modicum of skill does the name Larry Bird.
Bad Vlad? And we get this because he’s dominated the Pony Leaguers in Santo Domingo?

New Dominican Scandal
there were articles over the weekend in NY and LA papers about some illegal practices going on with these signings of players. Some of the agents are ripping off these young players and demanding about 30 % of their signing bonuses, and although this isn’t illegal, it’s certainly reprehensible. What IS illegal is that mlb scouts and possibly even GM’s are taking kickbacks out of the money that is supposedly being given to these players. They haven’t released a list of the teams that are being investigated yet, and it’s been said it’s just a few teams. Three teams that are definitely on that list though, are the Yankees, Nationals and White Sox. The White Sox have even fired a couple of their scouts already. With the Nationals, the GM himself, Jim Bowden, is supposedly being investigated. I hope the Giants are not involved here, because we’ve finally erased the stink left by that perv scout we used to have over there, and I would hate for us to have a new scandal.

agents
the 30% of signing bonus issue isn’t going to the ‘agents’ in the sense we know them, but the busones (which have been doing that sort of thing a long time). They do a lot more than agents do, sometimes boarding and feeding the prospects for years, and are sort of a scout/agent/schoolmaster all in one. Some of them are ok, some are really shady and just out for themselves. Some will take more than 30%.

ok, not that bad
Rodriguez, who will be eligible to sign when he turns 16 on July 13, draws universal praise for his athleticism, raw power, running ability and his projectable 6-foot-5, 198-pound frame. There is some length to the swing, but he has good bat speed with excellent raw power.
“Bodywise, he looks like Dave Winfield,” said one international scouting director. “But he’s also a guy with a lot of skills.”
Rodriguez still elicits mixed reviews from scouts who see a player with a questionable feel for hitting.
“He needs to improve his approach,” said one international scouting director. “He’s a front-foot hitter who doesn’t load at all in the front half. The bat is very, very questionable. He’s a good fastball hitter, but the bat is very, very questionable. He’s OK, but to me he’s not as good as Yorman Rodriguez. He’ll fill out a little bit, but I’ve seen him several times—there’s too much risk there now.”
“He can run and he’s a good athlete,” said another international scouting director, “but the bottom line is you’ve got to be able to hit.”
Like Rafael Rodriguez, Yorman Rodriguez also draws positive reviews for his athleticism and speed, but scouts are mixed on his ability to hit. Yorman Rodriguez has been strongly linked to the Mariners, though the Reds, Yankees and Red Sox have also been rumored to have strong interest. The Cardinals have also emerged as a serious contender for Rodriguez’s services. When he finally signs, there’s a chance that Rodriguez’s bonus could surpass the $1.9 million that Miguel Cabrera received from the Marlins in 1999, a record for a Venezuelan player.
Rodriguez attracts scouts with his athleticism, running 6.4 and 6.5 60-times. His speed and raw power both rate as 70s on the 20-80 scouting scale, but the hit tool has come into question.
“He collapses his front foot and reaches for the ball, where he lunges out front,” said an international scout. “Sometimes kids adjust, but you have to hope that he eventually hits the breaking pitch.”
“That guy can run,” said another international scout. “He’s got a good body—very lean and athletic—but he’s never hit with good competition in any place I’ve seen him, and the best I’ve seen him hit against was 82-83 (mph). I’ll sign him for $300,000 or $400,000, but that’s it. I won’t go any higher than that because he’s a good batting practice guy, but even in BP he shows you a lot of flaws. He’s kind of choppy and he’s not consistent. In BP the ball carries, but even then you’d like to see some consistency.”
Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

He’s 16 and he has yet to be coached by experienced major league people. Jeez, not only is he 16, but he just turned 16 yesterday!! I’m not concerned about his flaws at his stage. I’m sure one or two scouts don’t like him as we see here, but the Giants were certainly not the only team bidding for his services. In fact, rumor has it that the Cardinals offered more but he had already given his word to the Giants.

Raw is fine for a 16 year old kid. Keep in mind that a 16 year old in the States would be a sophomore or junior in high school, and it’s not like many of those come ML ready at that age.

I can hear the chuckleheads at ESPN coming up with an analysis of Rodriguez now, in an NFL draft-style sort of way….
Chris Berman: So Mel, you’ve been watching this kid since he was 13?
Mel Kiper Jr: Yeah Chris…this kid has ability, is super athletic but I wouldn’t have taken him before the third round.
Chris Berman: Well we are talking about a 16 year old kid year who just signed to play pro baseball!
Ron Jaworski: It doesn’t matter, in this day and age you have to hit the ground running. We’re talking about playing pro ball here!!! My old coach, Dick Vermeil didn’t wait for me to be any good. I had to perform from the first day I stepped into the organization.
Chris Berman: Are you guys listening? I’m talking about baseball!!! Steve, you must have something to add.
Steve Young: Cluk, cluk, cluk…I hate the Packers, is my mic on?...CLUKAH!!!
Chris Berman: We’re going to Bristol and Mark Schlereth…what do you think?
Mark Schlereth: I don’t think this guy is any good at all. He can’t be better than my son. My son went to college, he did it the RIGHT way! He doesn’t deserve that money. Is it payday yet? My mouth is writing checks my ass can’t cash.
Chris Berman: Okay…for once I have to ask this: does anyone on this broadcast have an objective analysis that isn’t reliant upon personal bias?
Steve Phillips: If you want “objective”, you have to pay me more. I should have deserved recognition from the Emmy’s for my mock presser.
Peter Gammons: Blow it out your ass, Steve. You did a crap job as a GM and now you’re getting paid top dollar to analyze things with the degree of a turnip! Your idea of “dues” is sticking any of us with the check after skipping out on the meal, you ass f—-.
Chris Berman: I’m trying to get analysis on a 16-year old Dominican player and I get this?!
Keyshawn Johnson: Chris, it is what it is. You can’t fight it.
Chris Berman: You’re right, Keyshawn. Take me to the nearest strip club…these whores have me all in a tizzy.
