Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Did anyone catch this first time around. Ted Robinson blogs (July 2nd) on the Giants. And I almost agree with him. I think Bonds should still be around - but that the rest of the old vets shouldn't fer sure.

Nope

In fact, they should have cut bait with the controversial slugger two years earlier. Look at the NL West. If the Giants had started to rebuild two years ago, they could well be in command of a mediocre division this season.

I got exactly that far. The idea that Bonds and rebuilding were mutually exclusive is one of the biggest loads of BS around.

More importantly, the idea that running a baseball team actually INVOLVES rebuilding kind of makes me mad. If you have to rebuild, then you did something the fuck wrong. Some people actually phrase this differently, saying something along the lines of “you are always rebuilding,” but that always struck me as false. Rebuilding implies being bad, so if you’re always rebuilding, then you must always suck. I think something along the lines of college football’s “You don’t rebuild, you re-tool” is more accurate.

Which brings up an even more asinine viewpoint: The idea that having Bonds and re-tooling were somehow exclusive is flabbergastingly stupid, and is the natural extension of Robinson’s original point.

Whatever. Screw that.

Also, the title of this fanshot is remarkably misleading. The article isn’t about Barry leaving sooner. It’s about him being kicked away sooner. There is a very big difference there. Robinson would have been stupid on a collosal level had he been arguing the other point. I’m actually relieved that he was just being stupid on a regular level.

You’re totally right. “Rebuild” is a term used and stretched to mean too many things. Sorry about the “left” word choice. I was trying to avoid the Giants better without Bonds thing. I got caught up in the second part of the blog – the bullet list of what the Giants should do.

It’s cool. Don’t take any offense to my above tone. I just get moody about Bonds.

Robinson has always been a Bonds hater and Selig defender. I didn’t mind him during his Giants anouncing days. But for the last several years, everytime I hear him on KNBR he’s trying to make the same ridiculous claims that Barry was somehow preventing the Giants from being a good team.
