Heard through the grapevine
I'm sure I'm going to sound like some weird person who likes to spread internet gossip in order to get attention--but I assure you I'm not. I've been told by an insider in the DR that the Giants have signed 16 year old Dominican OF Rafael Rodriguez. He's been compared to Dave Winfield, at least for physicality. His power and speed are 70's on the 20-80 scale, but his ability to make consistent contact is questionable. He signed for $2.55 M, and I'm told the Cardinals were right there.
There's another rumor the Cards suprassed the Giants offer and are giving him $3.3 M, but I can't verify that yet. Anyway, take it fwiw.

It’s already midnight in the Dominican, so perhaps we’ll find out soon. Futureredbirds.net has been covering it.

I guess your insider reads ESPN. I hope the Cards don’t steal him though.

I think if this fellow doesn’t break his arm patting himself on the back about being OMG BEST FAN IN BEISBOL he can be okay.

So we finally closed on him? Is the $3.3 mil indicative of his talent being bigger than Villalona or is that just the inflation talking?

Only bad news is that Rodriguez also compares to failed Dodger prospect Joel Guzman. One of the many comparisons that have been made to him.

Article I found
it also talks about the A’s signing Inoa, but does an age comparison of current prospects, along with Villalona and Rodriguez.

That 2012 roster looked beautiful.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Rafael Rodriguez OF 16 (N/A) Dominican Republic
Comment: To many, he is a duplicate of Vladimir Guerrero because of his size and power with the bat. Rodriguez can work the entire outfield and drive the ball anywhere. He has reportedly accepted an offer from the San Francisco Giants worth $2.5 million.
this was back on June 12th, but who knows…

Let’s hope he’s Vlad without the back problems and declining power.

That 2012 roster
could just as easily had Schierholtz in RF and Rodriguez in LF, with Freddie in CF. And I think by then, we’ll also have a decent 3B candidate as well. That 2012 rotation is the optimum we could expect, and it doesn’t even include Sosa.
Even after the Giants shower Cain, Lincecum, and Sanchez with longer term deals with higher $$$, that entire team a decade later would probably have a payroll no higher than about the $90 million figure during the Bonds years.

Rafael Rodriguez
I wouldn’t get too excited about him. He’s definitely not in the class of Big V who had the tools and an advanced approach for his age. I’ve still yet to read that someone is a better position prospect to come out of the DR since we signed Big V. Looks like for once we got in while the market was good.
From what I read, RR is pretty much pure projection based on foot and bat speed. As a prospect compare to Wendell Fairley, physically gifted but very, very raw.
by Change Up on Jul 13, 2008 10:13 AM PDT 0 recs
RR is very raw, much more so than Villalona. He is all projection to be sure.

speed
IIRC, villalona was said to have a lot of speed. His agent even tried to sell him as a future 40/40 guy. Of course, that’s just promoting his client, but still… I guess he gained some weight, but now it seems like everybody’s saying he’s big and slow. Hopefully Rodriguez can keep his speed.

Big V seemed to get down the line pretty fast on his comebacker to the pitcher. Not bad for a fat boy anyway.

I told you guys
This groundskeeper told me

Seriously, I hadn’t read that rumor on ESPN, so I could see how that looks kinda goofy. I’ve been talking to a guy over there, he’s no groundskeeper…although hey, maybe he worked his way up. heh.. I also am the writer of futureredbirds.net.

I’ve heard some mumbling that the redbirds might make a run at Yorman, but I wasn’t sure if the people I heard it from weren’t just confusing the Rafael and Yorman. Have you heard anything in regard to the redbirds and Yorman?
