it ain't personal, really

RA when Cain is the pitcher of record: 3.70 (after today, according to my rough calcs)
RA when any Giants pitcher is on the mound: 3.99

My favorite part of the game was when Cain struck out that guy.

this impatience on offense has got to stop

Cain threw 115 pitches, while Marquis threw just 81.
both went 7 innings

Bonds stands alone.

The Giants have your best interests in mind.

They’re trying to keep the agony from dragging on all day.

besides beating a dead horse on Tyler Dub

The offense is settling into the ‘07 habit of making mediocre pitchers look dominant.

LOL I left work (my mom wanted to take me out to lunch) and I was sitting in my car waiting for her and I had the game on. After they IBB’d Lee, I said, “Fuck it, this is stupid” and turned it off.

Apparently I picked the exact right moment to turn it off.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

by jponry on Jul 11, 2008 3:24 PM PDT   0 recs

good move

but I’m still curious as to what people think about the IBB. Pretty sure I would do it again, since you take the bat away from one of their main mashers, and set up the DP. Clearly it didn’t work, but I don’ t think you can fault Bochy on this one.

by BigO on Jul 11, 2008 3:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Like I said in the game thread

I wouldn’t give him a free pass, but I’d sure as hell pitch him carefully. Nothing over the heart of the plate.

And certainly nothing like the tomato Walker threw to Ramirez.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

by delorean on Jul 11, 2008 3:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m not a big fan of the pitch-around, but I can live with that analysis. Let’s face it: the problem had a lot less to do with picking which batters to face than picking which pitchers to use.

by BigO on Jul 11, 2008 3:57 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I strongly feel

That setting up the DP is not a valid reason to intentionally walk the #3 hitter.

I’m going to have to guess that the run potential of runner on 2nd 0 out is lower than that of runner on 1st and 2nd 0 out.

It may make some sense in the case where the hitter on deck is a worse hitter than the one you are IBB, but when you are walking the #3 to get to the #4, it just doesn’t make sense.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Jul 11, 2008 3:41 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

not that I would necessarily IBB here

Most of the extra value from putting the other guy on is the 2nd and 3rd runs possibly scored in the inning.

But you have to consider that late in the game, with the Giant’s offense, you are more worried about losing 1-0 than any other outcome.

FIRE BRIAN SABEAN

by zenbitz on Jul 11, 2008 4:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah

I found this little chart over at tangotiger, and it appears that putting a man on 1st with one out (and a runner already on 2nd) actually decreases the chances that the opposing team will score one run. The potential to score two nudges up a little, and then there appears to be a big jump to more than 2 runs.
I’d say that if we hadn’t had a big hitter like Lee up, then you consider pitching to him, but otherwise it’s the smart move to walk him in a game where runs where so hard to come by.

by BigO on Jul 11, 2008 5:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It doesn’t just set up the double play, it also gives you a force at at any base. If you can’t turn two, nailing the lead runner at 3rd, is a pretty good consolation prize.

I think Walker could use some time down in AAA

so he can practice not letting up 3 run homers that lose the game. Maybe we could do that whenever Merkin finishes his rehab assignment. Has he even started that yet?

Is Walker hurt?

He sat out most of this week because of his knee:

Walker tweaked his right knee Saturday, but Bochy said he “should be fine” after a couple of days’ rest.

I wonder if he’s not at 100%.

Considering Bochy’s opinion on “should be fine” with Valdez and others, Walker most likely is hurt.

I was bored at the gym...

and started thinking of ways for Cain to help himself get some wins…
...like ooooh… putting half the team [maybe for example 2/3 of the bullpen] on the wrong charter flight and having them end up in saaaay Tazmania instead of wherever Matt’s next start is to be.

locking Bochy in the groundskeeper’s shed…

supergluing Tyler Walkers fingers together

or maybe just smacking anyone who doesn’t get him an RBI with Rags’ clipboard

I was on the treadmill, I was bored. [and annoyed]

by Merope on Jul 11, 2008 5:19 PM PDT   0 recs

Wouldn’t it be harder using a clipboard rather than a bat?

Everybody Loves Durham

by Natto on Jul 11, 2008 5:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I considered a bat, but I don’t want the boy doing time for manslaughter; if I were Matt Cain and started taking out my frustrations with a bat somebody might die. I also considered my grandmother’s favorite punishment “I’ll beat you with a wet noodle.” however that just wasn’t severe enough.

Treadmills of and by themselves are boring and annoying.

They’sre also a major cheat – with normal human locomotion you are propelling yourself against a static resistance , i.e. the ground. With a treadmill all you need to do is move your feet to match the speed of a moving – in – your – direction resistance.
Be true to yourself. Go walk up a NON MOVING incline.

by victor frankenstein on Jul 11, 2008 6:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually

an eliptical is pretty nice. Better on your knees than a treadmill or normal walking. You can set high resistance and even adjust your walking angle. I swear by ‘em.

by bondslegend on Jul 11, 2008 7:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Once the air in our region is back to breathable, I can go back to my outside walks/bike rides. Until the fires die down -that’ll be what? October? – no outdoor walkies.

by Merope on Jul 11, 2008 8:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

We’re in the central valley, in the path of the smoke and all it’s particulate matter. Many outdoor activities in the area have been cancelled due to the bad air.

We haven’t really even seen the sun here for days. Every once in awhile there’s this huge red thing in the sky where the sun should be, but it isn’t visible for very long. Which really stinks, one of my summer projects was to build and use a solar oven. I’ve got the thing built, but without direct sunlight it doesn’t work very well!

At least the temperatures have gone down. Yay!

by bondslegend on Jul 12, 2008 11:12 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Eh, a lot of California’s air pollution comes from China, anyway.

Of course, this a lot of it is the local fires.

by howtheyscored on Jul 11, 2008 9:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Not to get political

But the environmentalists block the clearing of forests and logging etc. and that’s why these fires are so bad. If we thinned the forests the fires would’ve stopped a week ago.

by giants9107 on Jul 11, 2008 10:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m interested to find out more about the fires stopping a week ago.

by Johnny Disaster on Jul 11, 2008 11:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

On the other hand, there is a potentially serious difference between thinning the forests and logging the forests.

Which not to say that neither thinning nor logging are necessary or that neither one would be useful, because they can be and they almost certainly would be. Only that there is a thin line that would need to be drawn with regard to excess, and that it is one that people, historically, even knowingly, have a rich history of stepping over when it comes to cutting trees.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

And don’t get me wrong. I’m not a tree hugger. I wish to death that those pseudo-protestors sitting in the trees in Berkeley would just get out of the way and let them work on the damn stadium.

I prefer to think that I am environmentally aware, rather than environmentally extreme.

What day

did Sabes say that thing about Benji not being part of the Giants’ future plans what with these young up and coming catchers on the way, and then Benji said that it hurt his feelies?

It was a couple days after the draft, right – like June 9th or so?

Benji up to 6/9 – .333 / .360 / .500
Benji since 6/9 – .176 / .211 / .198
