OT- The Dark Knight

Ok so all of these previews have me wetting my pants. Who else is going into full nerd mode at the prospects of this potentially epic blockbuster movie? The last installment was very good, and this one looks about 100x better. Christopher Nolan FTW! So yes, I can't wait and Thursday/ Friday can't come fast enough.

The X-Files movie is the week after. I feel like a 12 year old all over again.

I'm excited about it

but starting to burn out. This should have been released a couple months ago. So late in the season is kind of lame.

As such, I am now more excited about X-Files. I have no clue what it is about. I haven’t seen a single preview or commercial and only one billboard.

I think it is funny that Batman hasn’t even come out and we already know there will be another sequel and that Two-Face will be the villain. Well, I dont’ think it’s funny…I think it is kind of lame. We should at least have to see the film to know this.

by positiveuphemism on Jul 11, 2008 2:20 PM PDT   0 recs

We don’t know that Two-Face is the villain in the next one. Everything other than the marketing for this one suggests that he’s the villain NOW.

My point is that we already know that Harvey Dent is in this film. He wasn’t in the first. It would be really cool if they make a few films and he is just dressing but that isn’t how Hollywood works. Harvey Dent in this film = Two-Face in the next. I suppose it is possible that he makes his transformation in this one, but that would be a very unwise twist in the third act.

by positiveuphemism on Jul 11, 2008 2:59 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess the word “suggests” was simply not definitive enough on my part.

Are we arguing about something? I’m confused.

The new Coen brothers film looks like a blast, though.

And Leo/Kate are back together in a San Mendes film. That smells like statues.

It's not a spoiler if it's in a trailer.

Check 1:45 in.

That’s all I’m getting at. They’ve made it very clear what’s happening with the characters in this movie for a while.

Ah

i’d never paid that close of attention to it but yeah…that does appear to be a Two-Face origin story.

My expectations just dropped some more. Why do these ppl think they need to pack so much stuff into a film? Batman / Joker is ALL they need.

Didn’t they see Spider-Man 3? Sigh.

by positiveuphemism on Jul 11, 2008 3:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It’s a completely legitimate fear, and until this movie got made I didn’t ever want to see another 2+ villain movie, but somehow I have so much faith in the people involved with this movie that I’m actually MORE excited about having both villains in it than I would have been otherwise.

I don’t think Two Face will play that large of a role in TDK. Batman Begins did have two villains though, so who knows.

It’s easy to overlook Liam Neeson’s villain character.

Well there is a trailer which I believe shows how he becomes Two-Face. So yes unfortunately he likely will be the next villain.

I've been waiting years for this one

I even saw that dreadful dud, I Am Legend, on IMAX just to watch the first 6 minutes of the Dark Knight that accompanied it.

Now the wait is down to 6 days…

I agree with positive, this movie should have been released on July 2nd, f* Hanock, make them adjust to you, you are the big dog in this fight

Screw Hancock period. But apparently Will Smith is box office power not to be trifled with, so I can understand why…but still.

I hope The Dark Knight shatters box office records. Fuck you Spiderman.

by Hobbes2d on Jul 11, 2008 2:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Eh, Hancock was pretty freaking harmless. Nothing outright bad about it (except for the cheesy ironic hero theme), but nothing particularly good, either. Fun if you can just get past expecting it to be anything else… which you probably shouldn’t be doing to begin with.

'Dark Knight' and 'Quantum of Solace'

I am very much looking forward to both of these… and not much else in the way of film this year. Maybe Josh has some tips on what else is coming up that will be great in the story department?

Sorry, Mayor

If you’re looking for stuff from Hollywood that’s great in the story department, you should lower your expectations. To help in that regard, you should read this screenwriter’s screed about working for Dreamworks Animation. Or better yet, read these exerpts from Allan Weisbacker’s tell-all memoir about his experiences in the development process, which is also linked from the first story (the second is very long - 6 parts - but well worth it if you love behind-the-scenes stories about the kind of unbelievable idiocy only found in show business).

That being said, I’ll be right there with the unwashed masses this summer, shelling out my duckets to see many of the blockbusters listed here, as well as three low-brow comedies—STEP BROTHERS, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, and TROPIC THUNDER.

I know. Sigh. I was just hoping that maybe you knew of some cool indie gem or even semi-indie gem that was in the nearish future. Sigh. I guess other than Dark Knight and Quantum of Solace (the latter of which I’m only expecting to be a fun time and a good movie, not necessarily a great story), I guess I’ll have to wait for the statue bait season. (One question about Oscar Season… if it’s Oscar season, can we shoot it? Is it legal to trap for it?)

..You could try THE VISITOR (if you can still find it in theaters). I haven’t gotten around to see it yet, but lots of people are raving about it—and touting Richard Jenkins as a dark-horse candidate for an Oscar nom. It’s from the writer/director of THE STATION AGENT.

I so cannot wait for this. I know it’s going to be mindblowing but the reviews I’ve read so far are calling it a film that’s beyond all expectations—an actual, honest to god, excellent piece of film. Not just a superhero flick.

Problem is, I have no clue when I’m going to see it. I’m slammed busy that weekend. Friday night, Crazy Crab night. Saturday morning, my road test at the DMV (!). Saturday the rest of the day, studying/homework. Sunday, AIDS Walk. I can always go the following weekend but everyone will be OMGWTFBBQ DARK KNIGHT by then. Feh.

Since you mentioned the X-Files movie, let’s not forget to talk about the other fine and exciting films coming out over the next few weeks.

Hellboy II is going to be fairly awesome, but I’m also one of the ones who thought that Hellboy I was fairly awesome. And Hellboy I was studio strapped, while del Torro was given much more freedom this time around.

Then X-Files. Remember when I had that dream where I was Scully? Yeah… I’m excited about this movie.

And then Mummy III. Screw all the Mummy III haters. I like Brendan Fraser. Sure, the movie looks like crap, but that’s not going to stop it from being great.

X-Files

I shouldn’t be shocked at anything coming out of Hollywood anymore, but i was actually shocked when I learned they were doing another X-Files movie. I’ll probably see it, but I’m not sure I’ll get to it in the theater. I just don’t get out to the movies that much (partly because I just don’t think many movies are worth seeing, period, much less in the theaters, and then I don’t even see as many movies in the theaters that I want to).

I am intrigued by it, though.

Part of the reason you were shocked (maybe) is because the whole thing wasn’t even announced until they were practically already done filming it. Every now and then, Duchovny would give an interview where he lied and said “We’ve been talking, but nothing’s going on.” Even now, they’re being ridiculously secretive about the whole thing.

Mummy III

The Mummy is one of those films that I don’t mind so much. It’s basically harmless fun.

The Mummy II, however, was horrible and it really tainted that franchise for me. I guess I shouldn’t hold that against a movie that hasn’t even come out, yet. But I find it hard not to…

- Chinese dragons don’t breathe fire.

But I do like Brendan Fraser (really!) and I liked the first two Mummy movies. And I’ll watch anything Jet Li is in. *thinks of War * Well, almost anything.

The Dark Knight

There were several movies recently that I said “I want to see that in the theaters.” I then proceeded to not see each one. The Simpsons Movie, Indiana Jones, Prince Caspian, etc.

There’s no way I’m missing the Dark Knight. I probably won’t see it the day it comes out. But I am most definitely seeing it at some point soon.

The thing about Batman Begins was it basically treated the superhero concept and the audience with the most respect by keeping things as close to the real world as possible; and they did it without taking away the fun of the superhero genre.

And now the Dark Knight has, perhaps, the best supervillain ever in it…

In the theatre?

There’s been a couple of comments about whether a movie is worth seeing in the threatre and it got me thinking. We don’t see many movies in actual movie theatres anymore. For lot’s of reasons:

- With a big screen plasma, surround sound and comfy furniture, the “experience” icompares nicely
- Crowds in theatres are less and less courteous. People can’t seem to shut up or stay off their cell phone
- Prices are outrageous (shaking fist like an angey old man) especially concessions
- Being able to stop a movie to take a leak and not miss anything is pretty nice

About the only reason I go to a theatre these days is when I can’t wait for it to come out on video. Indiana Jones was the last such movie, but I’ll probably go out to see Dark Knight and Hellboy. I usually try to see all the films nominated for Best Picture so I can root on Oscar-night, and that usually means having to go to the theatre.

How do the rest of you feel on the subject of theatre vs. home viewing?

2008 Giants: Scrappy! Scrappy! Joy! Joy!

by Goofus on Jul 11, 2008 4:53 PM PDT   0 recs

i disagree on the crowd factor

yes, sometimes crowds can be annoying, but often it can enhance the experience. Plus the actual “going out” factor makes it more of an event. Seeing it on a huge screen will always be better than a plasma, the plasma just narrows the gap, that’s all

www.wazzel.com (prove your sports knowledge if you can)

by NeifiChicken on Jul 11, 2008 5:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I’d much rather “go out” for dinner, cocktails, dancing, a play, a comedy club or a sporting event. I’ve never felt like I’m at an event when I go to the movies….maybe that’s just me.

I mean, is really an event if hookers ‘n blow aren’t involved?

2008 Giants: Scrappy! Scrappy! Joy! Joy!

by Goofus on Jul 11, 2008 5:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You're right about crowds. Inconsiderate and loutish. Theater for certain films only.

I don’t have big screen plasma, so the visual and audio experience for me is still superior at the theater. For most movies, home is fine, but if it’s a Big Epic Type of movie, in which the visual and audio size is important, then I’ll go to the theater… but NEVER in the first few days of release and I try to go at odd times. Why?

Because crowds are damn near intolerable. You mention the talking and the cell phones (not to mention the small ocean of glittering dots in my field of vision between me and the screen, which are actually youngsters txting—probably txting someone else in that very theater). I would add stupid people bringing little kids to late evening shows, stupid people walking in and out during the movie, likely catching parts of other movies while there to see a different movie. I also add stupid people walking in and out for restroom or concession breaks, because 100 minutes is like flying from here to Paris.

I would also add that 3 of 5 movies I have seen in theaters in the last few months had bad projecting—the dumbass projectionist was shooting the film too low on the screen, so we weren’t seeing the bottom little bit of the screen (haven’t seen the boom microphones at the top, but that’s just luck).

Customer service in America is generally in decline, and movie theaters are no different, I guess.

I'm adopting a true Giant and an awe-inspring gamer: tk. "Atta babe."

by Mayor of 311 on Jul 11, 2008 5:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I hope you typed all that with one hand and shook your fist with the other :-)

You’re right about the little kids thing; people are too cheap to hire a babysitter and think nothing of letting their baby cry through an entire movie. Pisses me off.
