Dave Roberts won't be starting in LF
Outfielder Dave Roberts has swung the bat well in his first three rehab games with Triple-A Fresno. In eight at-bats he had a double, triple, homer and three RBIs. He also walked twice. If he keeps swinging like that, he could find himself back in San Francisco sooner than the 45 to 60 at-bats manager Bruce Bochy suggested he would need.
Some fans are not looking forward to Roberts' return for fear that Bochy will install him as the starting left fielder over Fred Lewis. A team source said that will not happen.

who’s the team source?? If it’s not Bochy, I have no faith in this supposedly reassuring information. By the way, the Giants just sent Travis Denker all the way down to San Jose. It wouldn’t surprise me if Roberts is called up.

though I’ll believe it when I see it.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Nominated for WBQOTW
“I think he’ll be a huge addition,” Bochy said. “With Dave’s experience and ability to play left and center, his speed, his left-handed bat, it would be similar to getting a free agent because we really haven’t had that all year. He has some weapons that can help us, whether it’s coming off the bench or starting.”
Question
Do you really, really hate Dave Roberts as a player? Do you really think he completely sucks, or is his performance hampered since he joined the Giants by injuries? Is the “Mass Suck” more a function of his contract than his actual ability?
He gets a lot of flack, but I just don’t see why there is so much hatred of Dave – I despise his contract and the guy who gave it to him; I despise the man who puts him in the lineup ahead of young players we need to evaluate and who have a chance to be on the team when we’re back in contention. But hate Dave? I just can’t.
What say you to that?
Delaying the disappointment: I adopt Hector Sanchez because he's only 17.
He’ll get his oozies, his ak-47s…

I really hate to be so negative about him because he is basically the coolest guy ever, but man, no more Dave Roberts. Please.

Jesus
it is quotes like this that really make me dislike Bochy.
PS BOCHY – Fred Lewis, right now – is better than Dave Roberts EVER WAS!
What the fuck does Dave Roberts have that we have been missing? Jesus.

Gospel of Truth
Bruce Bochy has spoken. What other team in baseball could possibly resist such a player? Please, remember the Giants’ will take your call in the order in which it was recieved. Please fax all formal trade offers ASAP to ensure equal weight will be given to each one. This call may be recorded for quality control.
If he uses Roberts in the role he plans to use Velez, which is late inning pinch hitter or pinch runner he might help the team. Then again, what good does it do?? This team shouldn’t be about squeezing an extra win or two, it should be about letting the younger guys take their lumps to get them some experience.

I like how Bochy threw in that "or starting" at the end.
Something tells me he’s not the team source.

I don't care what Bochy says...
...I expect him to say good things about players coming back off the DL.
What I do care about is when he keeps giving starts to flailing veterans (yes, I’m looking at you, Omar) well past the point of rationality. Which doesn’t make me feel good about the return of Roberts.

I’m hoping…really hard…that Omar is playing so much as a sign of respect for a future HOF-er. I hope. Really hard.
Seriously!
He’s had like five extra base hits since coming off the DL! It’s about time to play Omar twice a week!
It’s also about time to NOT pitch Tyler Walker in a close game.

Giants should DFA Bochy
and make Omar a player/manager so he can bench himself
Barry Zito: so-so command of the changeball
I have a crazy thought on this one...
How about, I don’t know… Whoever is pitching well? For example, what was Alex Hinshaw doing right then? Was he too busy not pitching to be bothered to pitch? I’m just a firm believer in riding the hot hand, and in a 0-0 ballgame, you should start out with whomever is pitching the best right then.
Admittedly, Hinshaw was the only example I could come up with. I’d also suggest Matos, except he pitched both of the last two days… Still, in a 0-0 ballgame, and desperately needing a win, you might look at him anyway.

fuckit
As soon as the leadoff batter reached, Wilson should have come in.

Did anyone?
Did anyone truly expect for Davey to take left field from Freddie Lewis? I realize that wouldn’t necessarily conflict with the usual thinking of the Giants, but I believed a full month or more ago that Freddie had won the spot for a while.
Freddie is likely hitting over his head with a BABIP of something like .360 or .370, so he will likely fall back. And when that happens, we might expect Davey to begin getting more starts, particularly against the lefties Freddie has struggled against.
Davey doesn’t hit lefties well, either. But at this point he probaby hits them better than Freddie.
I don’t know. Freddy both won and kept the left field job kind of by default. It doesn’t seem much different to me than the SS situation, except that Bocock was a terrible hitter. I realize that’s kind of a big difference, but since performance has never seemed to be much of a factor in Bochy’s lineup cards, I’m not sure that I should consider it.

I think the evidence suggests
That, had Dave Roberts not gotten injured and played at about expected pace, Fred Lewis would have gotten about 1/3 the AB’s he has gotten thusfar.
And certainly restricted to facing RHP

Stop gap
It was clear from the start that Brian Bocock was a stop gap solution at shorstop who had been rushed by at LEAST a year and probably more.
Freddie Lewis, on the other hand, had well over 100 at bats of major league experience entering the season.
Apples and oranges. Black and white. Left and right. Ready and not ready.
I absolutely agree with you on principle. I simply don’t have any faith in Bruce Bochy to respect the spirit of that principle.
