VERY interesting article regarding...Hank Aaron?

http://www.protrade.com/content/DisplayArticle.html?sp=S8687c664-c2d1-11db-9291-83f05e1a00a7

Maybe this is why Hank Aaron pretty much stayed quiet during Bonds' run.

Def Leppard is great. To me they’re a metal band that isn’t obnoxious. Photograph is one of the great songs of all time.

To me they’re not a metal band.

I must admit

I, too, am a Def Leppard sympathizer – not to be confused with a Uriah Heep synthesizer.

Sigh, my first concert ca. 1984 oakland col.

Sticking to the subject, that article said it’s possible that Aaron used steroids and it wouldn’t surprise me if he did, but we really don’t know it for a fact. Unfortunately, we DO know it for a fact with Barry. Still, everyone was doing it, and I think Barry is being blackballed right now. We got beat the last two nights by players I am highly suspicious of in Ramon Castro and Fernando Tatis. Castro was a .160 hitting catcher up until two years ago when he showed up bigger and with much more power, and Tatis came out of nowhere to hit 34 homeruns, then went back into oblivion, and now after two years out of baseball is hitting bombs again. As Tom House would say, the Mets outmilligramed us this week!!

Nah. Check the minor-league numbers for Castro and Tatis. These guys have always been hitters.

The real mystery with Tatis is what the hell happened to him. He was a great prospect coming up, and one of the best players in the game at age 24. Two years later, he was pretty much through as a useful player.

by Evan on Jul 11, 2008 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've got an idea what might have "happened" to him...

And just ‘cause a guy is a hitter in the MiL doesn’t exonerate him. If you can’t hit the ball, PED aren’t going to help you.

If you are a pretty good hitter and use PED, that is where you could see some serious improvement.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Jul 11, 2008 8:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He wasn’t a “pretty good hitter.” He was one of the best prospects in the game. If a guy hits .303 with 43 doubles and 15 home runs in A-ball at the age of 20, it’s not surprising that he could hit .298 with 31 doubles and 34 home runs in the majors at the age of 24. That’s a normal development curve.

And if his performance in 1999 was the result of steroids, why couldn’t he keep it going in 2000 and 2001? Did his dealer cut him off?

by Evan on Jul 11, 2008 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

some of these guys actually don’t want to die. They do it to get the big contract, then they stop. I don’t know Tatis’ contract situation, but that might have been the reason. One of the things I always admired about Barry, (as perverse as it might be) is that he got the big 100 million dollar deal and then kept using. He gave the team its money’s worth. Players like Bret Boone took the big money, got off the stuff, and basically cheated everybody.

Wait wait, let me feign surprise…. :O

There. We’ve done it. As Rx said above everyone is/was doing it so this whole blah-de-blah is old meme to me.

On this very subject, did anyone see that retarded article Passan wrote about Albert Pujols’ faith healing getting him back from his elbow problems? Right. Some mailbag letters came back calling Passan out for not even addressing the possibilty of PED use. The possibility absolutely exists with anyone playing this game. To not even bring it up is pretty asinine.

Oh well, Passan never impressed me anyway.

I stopped taking Passan seriously about four years ago. He’ll occasionally write an interesting piece on some AAAA player who had a hard life, but when he tries to write about anything else he’s pretty much just another member of Hackville in Nointerity County.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

His thing on Brian Barton was interesting, about Barton’s dreams of going into space and NASA and stuff. Although it did make me wanted to photoshop a picture of Barton to say GOING TO THE MOON BRB

I have no idea whether Hank Aaron took PEDs but

I do think it’s ridiculous that the media treats the steroid issue/era as if it only occurred between 1990-2007. Athletes used steroids long before then and they’ll continue to use them long after the “steroids era”. The idea of testing does help a ton since it instills some type of fear in to athletes, but it will never be able to keep up with the guys that make the drugs.

This piece has been floating around for a while now. The “Davey Johnson was Brady Anderson’s manager!!!!!” bit at the end gives you a clue as to the quality of logical thinking at work.

I think everyone knows this already, but Aaron’s big power spike in 1969 coincided with a huge leaguewide rise in offensive production. Same thing happened again in 1973. Aaron stayed the same; it was the context that changed.

uh-oh

Henry Louis Aaron and Barry Lamar Bonds both contain 15 letters.

Both men are black outfielders whose assault on the career home run record was met with a measure of discord.

Both men have Willie Mays as their closet comp by similarity score.

Both men broke the career home run record in a stadium within 400 miles of their birthplace.

I remember hearing an interview with someone from the 70’s Braves about a year ago, who was talking about the use of PEDs dating back to that era. I think it was Dale Murphy…

I definitely wouldn’t put it past Hammerin Hank.
