That must have been some med school
Did your dad also take the class in which you learn how to make a positive diagnosis just by watching 45 minutes of video taken by the family of someone in a persistent vegetative state? Because no other doctor seems to have taken that class besides bill frist, either.

Not just contend, but the level of monumental failure the team would achieve in the playoffs if somehow they won this cripplefight of a division…that itself should be enough to say no.

Team Chemistry Question
I had a brief discussion of this on my site, but do you guys believe in it? And if so, isn’t this years Giants supposed to be the most TEAM CHEMISTRY oriented team ever in recent memory?
If chemistry really existed (and had a tangible impact on a team) shouldn’t we be a lot better now that big bad Barry Bonds is gone?
Talk amongst yourselves.
Bonds
Is the poster child for chemistry in baseball, so no – that doesn’t make any sense.

Better team =>happier players=>better team chemistry=>people claiming that team is better because of team chemistry.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
I don't know
It’s a mixed bag. The Yankees teams in the 70s HATED each other and they won a few World Series. Plenty of teams with great chemistry finish last.
Grant had an excellent post on this subject a few months ago that I’m far too lazy to look up or link to.

I believe that team chemistry only makes a difference for very good teams, and even then not significantly so. It can put a team over the top, but success begins and ends with talent.
I also believe that winning breeds chemistry, so most very good teams will exhibit it by default, again making it a less significant factor in anything. Likewise, losing breeds bad chemistry. We’ve seen it happen.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

2004 Red Sox: Perfect example
Had enough talent to get to where they were. Needed the chemistry to come back against the Yankees.
also needed Mariano Rivera to melt down.

And good talent = winning, so chemistry is just another word for talent? Which you can measure, unlike the nebulous team chemistry phrase.
I think “Good Talent -> Winning -> Good Chemistry” is a closer approximation, though still visibly oversimplified.
More often than not, Good Chemistry is the end result, not the starting point. And I think that Good Chemistry is nebulous by nature. It’s most often the intuitive, perhaps visual result of other things going right. And those other things aren’t always the same things. So much of the time instead of saying that “these things went right, so the team is good,” we say “the team is good because the chemistry is there.”
It’s the same kind of false connection that makes us say things like “This team is good because they made the playoffs.” Taking the result and mistaking it for the cause.

Winning = team chemistry?
by chilibean_3 on Jul 10, 2008 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions
Team Chemistry is crap.
Someone mentioned the 1970s Yankees who had horrible chemistry yet still won WS, and I would add the Oakland Atleticos of the early 1970s who won WS despite horrible chemistry. (Hmm, common denominator: Reggie Jackson. Coincidence? Discuss.) Frankly, the 2002 Giants didn’t have excellent chemistry, and came within a few lucky breaks of… well, nevermind that.
The ingredients of a championship team are: talented players at the key positions + clear strategy that everyone on the team buys into and works to support + luck. (And I would be open to other characterizations as well.) Chemistry is nice for the players who have to spend 7 straight months together, and it can make for a nice story or feeling among the fans, but it’s not necessary to winning and it’s not necessary to fan enjoyment.
