This is reminding me of Schmidt's 16 K game
by bondslegend on Jul 1, 2008 9:14 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
legendary
iirc, Schmidt closed out the CG with his final K, runner at 3rd in a close game….

Yup
2 on, he K’d the side. I kept thinking he had nothing left, and he kept throwing Ks.

That was awesome. Many people are mad at him now for leaving for the Dodgers, but I was sure a huge fan of his back then. I remember watching the ending so many times. “And that’s the ballgame, he strikes out 16!” Good times.

by jponry on Jul 1, 2008 9:16 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
the greedy SOB in me says...
i know it’s a save situation but send him out.
one guy reaches and you pluck him.
Cain’s needed the confidence boost of a game like this.
The fact that he’s so close to the first CG for the giants, let alone complete game shutout, I think could turn a huge corner for him.
by ExcuseMeSwing on Jul 1, 2008 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
but still… he’d end up over 120 and that’s just not necessary.

it’s not like throwing 130 instead of 115 is going to kill him

Again, thanks Dusty.
I don’t want to shred his arm.

by jponry on Jul 1, 2008 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, actually it will
that’s really bad on a pitcher’s arm. It’s been studied and everything.
by bondslegend on Jul 1, 2008 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
right, but
doing it once in a while won’t kill you.
What’s bad is doing it all the time.

by Aadik on Jul 1, 2008 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
his arm is worth risking?
no. He’s a great pitcher, but we want him to be good for a while. If we can’t trust our closer with a 2 run lead in 1 inning, he doesn’t deserve the role.

It's not about trusting your closer
it’s about giving your young emerging pitcher a big confidence boost

Durham stretched a bloop single into a double and then realized that 3rd base was unoccupied and started to run there, but then stopped and had to dive back into 2nd based to avoid the tag. The Giants dugout got a kick out of it.
