minor lines, 6/30/08
AAA: Fresno defeated Tucson 8-7 (10 innings)
Fresno: 1B Brett Harper: 2 for 5, HR, E
Fresno: C Eliezer Alfonzo: 2 for 4, HR, HBP
Fresno: RHP Matt Palmer: 5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K--1 HR, 2 WP
Tucson: RHP Billy Buckner: 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K--1 HB
With one out in the 10th inning, Harper and Alfonzo went back-to-back with solo HRs, their 10th and 6th HRs of the year.
Palmer allowed just 1 ER (but three unearned runs) to improve his ERA to 4.35. He allowed no walks after issuing multiple walks in each of his (at least) last nine starts. The D'backs' Buckner, whom they acquired in an off-season trade for Alberto Callaspo, dominated the Grizzlies for eight inning, before the Grizzlies rallied for eight runs in two innings against the D'backs bullpen.
AA: Connecticut defeated New Hampshire 1-0
Connecticut: 2B Olma Rosario: 2 for 4, CS
Connecticut: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 2 for 3, SH, SO
Connecticut: RHP Nate Bump: 6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--2 HB
Connecticut: RHP Justin Hedrick: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K
Connecticut: RHP Osiris Matos: 1.0 IP, 1 K
New Hampshire: LHP Brett Cecil: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Rosario and Rohlinger each had two of the Defenders' seven hits, improving their AVGs to .299 and .250.
Bump had his third outstanding start in a row, improving his ERA to 3.51. He combined with Hedrick and Matos, who both have ERAs below 1.75, for the shutout. Matos earned his 8th save. Cecil, the Blue Jays' top pitching prospect, continues to pitch well. In thirteen starts since being promoted to the upper minors less than a year after he was drafted, he has 45 H, 18 BB and 54 K in 52.2 IP with a 2.91 ERA.
A+: San Jose defeated Bakersfield 12-2
(scoring in all nine innings)
San Jose: LF Bobby Felmy: 2 for 3, HR, 2B, BB, SO
San Jose: 3B Brad Boyer: 3 for 3, BB
San Jose: RHP Chris Begg: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K--2 HB
With three hits each, Felmy and Boyer accounted for nearly half of the Giants' thirteen hits, raising their respective AVGs to .293 and .371. Felmy connected for his 5th HR. Boyer has an OPS above .900 in 70 AB with San Jose after a sub-.600 OPS in 50 AB with Connecticut.
After two rehab starts with Salem-Keizer, Begg made his first full-season appearance of the year, which included a 6/8 GO/FO line.
A-: Augusta defeated Hickory 7-2
Augusta: 2B Nick Noonan: 2 for 5, 2 2B, 2 SO, E
Augusta: DH Thomas Neal: 1 for 3, HR, BB
Augusta: RHP Chance Corgan: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 HB
On the final day of the month, Neal connected for his first HR in June. After 6 HR in April, he has gone deep just twice since. Noonan had his 19th and 20th doubles, but he also commited his 13th error. Noonan hit very well in June, finishing the month with a line of .364/.398/.559 in 93 AB.
Making his fourth start of the year, Corgan improved his ERA to 3.12 with his third straight start allowing just 1 ER.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Eugene 1-0
Salem-Keizer: 2B Ryan Lormand: 1 for 3, BB
Salem-Keizer: RHP Mike Loree: 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
Lormand, this year's 26th rounder who scored the game's only run in the 1st inning, was the only Volcano to reach base twice, but he still has an OPS well below .550.
Loree, the 50th round pick a year ago, presumably had the best start of his entire baseball career with six perfect innings. Each of the three relievers who followed him allowed a hit but preserved the shutout.
R: Giants defeated Padres 9-5
(after scoring seven runs in the 1st inning)
Scottsdale: DH Rob Flanigan: 3 for 5, 2 SO
Scottsdale: RF Ryan Mantle: 2 for 4, 3B, 2B
Scottsdale: RHP Jorge Buchardo: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Scottsdale: LHP Roberto Martinez: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K
Flanigan had the first multi-hit game of his pro career, while Mantle added a couple XBH in his second multi-hit game. They have combined for ten total games in their young pro careers.
The 18-year-old Bucardo has now allowed 5 ER through the first two starts of the 2008 season, after allowing just 9 ER all of last season. The 22-year-old Martinez, the first of three relievers out of the bullpen, retired eight of the nine batters he faced.
DSL: Giants lost to Red Sox 7-6
Dominican: 2B Julio Izturis: 1 for 2, 3 BB, SB, CS, E
Dominican: RHP Bertoni Garcia: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Izturis continues to be an OBP machine, with an OBP near .500 despite an AVG below .250. Perhaps his three walks yesterday are less impressive given that the next four hitters in the Giants lineup also drew multiple walks. His SB/CS line is now 6/3. The 16-year-old (a week away from his 17th birthday) Garcia, making his sixth relief appearance, allowed the first run of his pro career. His stats remain impressive with 5 H, 4 BB and 11 K in 13.0 IP.

I haven’t seen Wendell Fairley’s name in the last few of these posts I’ve caught – has he improved at all from his first couple of games, when he was striking out in every AB?
he's doin alright
He’s cut down on the K’s, but his line is .214/.273/.286/.559. Kinda crappy. Small sample size, though. Only 28 ABs
Remember...
He’s supposed to be super raw. Lots of skills, but it’s going to take him a while to develop, most likely longer than say, Noonan.

Well he's not exactly getting a quick start at it
I liked this pick when it was made, but Wendell surely isn’t sending out a lot of signals for hope thus far in his career. Taking over a year to even take a field of competitive play isn’t getting the development curve off to a very promising start. He also apparently took very little part in either last fall’s instructional league or ST with a variety of ailments and personal issues. And he’s also older than most HS draftees. Please, Wendell, give us a sign!
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
I didn't like the pick then, but a slow start is expected from a raw tools pick
If he’s going to prove me wrong (like, say, Burris has been, another pick I didn’t like), Fairley isn’t going to do it this month. He’s going to do it in a couple years.

Yes but there's a big difference
between a slow start on the field (ie, inconsistent performance & poor stats) and a slow start getting to the field. A biiiiiig difference.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
he was in extended spring training
I hear they have fields, too.
Actually
according to one of Sabean’s recent Razor & Mr. T programs he was gone for a decent portion of the XST attending to personal matters back home. He had missed most of ST itself with some injuries and ailments.

No silly, you need a vagina to have a baby. And I’m pretty sure something like that would’ve been in his scouting report.

I thought just ovaries. Scouting reports could miss that.

You might be on to something.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but having ovaries and no vagina would necessitate a Caesarean section. A highly invasive surgical procedure like that would certainly explain his extended absence since being drafted.

Would the time off be called maternity leave or paternity leave? My brain is exploding…

Speaking of recommending two things
I recommend everyone become a fan of my two kids- Brett Harper and Julio Izturis. “Money”. Yup, Pink Floyd wrote a song about them before either of them were born. That’s how good they are!
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.
Ryan Mantle
It’s probably just because I am a person d’un certain age, but I must confess I get chills up my spine when I see “Mantle” connected with the Giants. A slugging Mantle in the SF system: ‘tis a thing devoutly to be wished.
