More Roster Moves
Sadler & Holm down, Matos & Notgardo up:
More roster changes
The Giants made a couple of moves today. They optioned catcher Steve Holm and reliever Billy Sadler to Triple-A Fresno and recalled catcher Eliezer Alfonzo from Fresno and right-handed reliever Osiris Matos from Double-A Connecticut.
The catching move surprises me a little. The brass had been talking up Holm all season and were not happy with Alfonzo's performance or conditioning this spring. Plus, Alfonzo just served a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy.
Matos, 23, had a 1.23 ERA in 27 games for the Defenders, with 11 walks and 37 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings. Sadler sealed his fate Monday when he walked the bases loaded before allowing Mark DeRosa's grand slam.
By the way, Vinnie Chulk cleared waivers and the Giants outrighted him to Fresno.

I feel kind of bad for Holm.

Intersting to see Osiris Matos get the call….I had pencilled Anubis Rodriguez for that roster spot.

Well, with Horus Fernandez having an underwhelming season, he would have been the obvious choice.
Congratulations to the All-Father! I’m so proud.

Let’s give Osiris a pharoah shot, first.

So… you excited about The Mummy 3? I know I am! (irrational Brendan Fraser fanboy)

I wasn’t aware that Brendan Fraser still had fans.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.
I can’t help it. Just because he’s made a lot of crap doesn’t stop me from enjoying it…
Plus, he was good in The Quiet American.

I would, but it’s a movie that costs MORE than a movie, and movies already cost a lot, so I won’t.

Of course it costs a lot
Have you seen the previews? There’s quite a bit of action on screen there, and it must have been murder piecing together scenes from so many subterranian locations. The special equipment needed to film so close to an erupting volcano…the multiple cameras needed to capture that perfect menacing look of the prehistoric cave-shark…and can you imagine the costs alone of shipping dinosaurs to the film site at the center of the earth?

Yeah, let's give him the chance to develop his cheops.

+1
Thought he could refuse the assignment.
Also: Kinda fucked for Holm, no? Kind of a wasted half-year for him.
yay, All-Father, tho!

Wasted development time for position prospects is the Giants Speciality

So then he made roughly $175K? How does that work, exactly?

as for the others
Holm: That sucks man, at least you get regular at bats now.
Sadler: when the L screen isnt in front of you stop throwing BP.
Notgardo: drink your milk, i hear that has steroids too.
I don’t get why they sent Holm down, because he wasn’t playing?
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Maybe our GM is just a shithead and doesn't know what he's doing?

I guess we probably shouldn't take that one off the table just yet, huh.
I'm adopting a true Giant and an awe-inspring gamer: tk. "Atta babe."
Surprised on Holm also
He has been in an extended slump at the plate, but even so he’s got a .321 OBP, which looks positively lofty compared to Alfonzo’s.
Maybe some wires got crossed in the front office. “Remember that guy who used to hit home runs for us? You know, the one involved in the PED scandal? We should bring him back.”

Better catchers on the way?
Hopefully with Pablo Sandoval and (probably) Buster Posey in the system, we’ll have better options to back up and eventually replace Bengie than Alfonzo and Holm…
Don’t forget G. Rod…he’s another career minor leaguer that’s part of our squad.
Adoptive papa to Omar...so basically I'm screwed.

Interesting about Holm.
I wonder if it means there is something afoot.
I thought Sadler had promise – but he needs to figure out how to throw strikes.
Eugeniooooooo!!!!
Holm
I can’t see that Holm has any complaints. He had his ticket punched—he made the majors even though no one would have predicted it a year ago. Now he goes down and plays regularly at Fresno. If he does well, he’s in a good position to catch on as backup for some other team that’s worse off than we are in terms of catching prospects.
Sadler
he’s been getting shelled. Hopefully, he’ll regroup in Fresno and harness his stuff. He’ll be back up eventually.

moves
Reasons: Alfonzo is a better hitter with more power than Holm… he also has a stronger arm, though is not as good a receiver. Also… Alfonzo is squaring up everything right now… Holm is not and has not for the last month. Sadler needs to mature and gain better command of outstanding stuff. I’ve never seen Matos throw, but his stats are good
Eh… Eliezer for Holm is kind of an even swap, after I looked at the numbers. Holm has a much better approach, but makes worse contact and has negative power, and Eliezer’s moderate power acts a great equalizer for his completely deficient OBP skillz (though I would argue that his “power” is a little misleading if you’re thinking HRs… he’s much more of a doubles guy than a bleachers guy, except for a kind of flukey 300 ABs in 2006).
And at LEAST, this will make tk happy.

Stop crying, my son.
Remember, this is the best move for the team. One day we’ll see each other again, I promise. Until then, we will never forget your name’s striking reseblence to a fictional egotistical high schooler.
Proud pappa of....STEVE HOLM!!
Or your late inning pinch hit 2 run Jack
That made us all fall in love with you the first time.
Keep working on the Mustache!

I’d much rather have Holm as the backup catcher. Notgardo is an awful catcher, and is actually quite painful to watch behind the plate. I don’t get this move.
Kinda sad to see Sadler get sent down. He had a couple of bad outings, but seems to have a bright future. Excited to see Matos, however.
F___ Vinnie Chulk.
I’m still giving Chulk the benefit of the doubt that he’s not fully recovered from that tobacco-arm thing. He never did look like himself after coming back.

Is it possible
They are bringing up Notgardo to showcase him a little at the ML level in advance of the trade deadline?
Meet my three little friends: Timmy, Dirty, and Cain
How’s Sanchez’s English? I honestly don’t know, since I’ve never seen (or, you know, heard) him speak. Could this maybe (extreme blind optimism here, absolutely) be a precursor to trading Molina?

BMoney is a keeper
Jonathan Sanchez, like most native born Puerto Ricans, prefer to speak their native language of Spanish. Sanchez does speak English with a accent.
But if the Giants want a Spanish speaking catcher on the roster for Sanchez’s sake, does it not follow that by an extremely optimistic line of thinking that bring up Eliezer Alfonzo would be a move to make sure that there is one on the roster when the optimistically impending Molina trade goes down?
Part of the optimism is expecting to get something decent back for Molina.
I hope it’s extremely clear by now how unlikely I feel this suggestion is. I just want to establish whether or not the possibility is even remotely realistic.

Nah
Alfonzo has served his time for his crime and is now ready to return. Alfonzo provides a power bat to the Giants that Holm does not.
I understand. I was just throwing my head in the speculative clouds for a bit. It doesn’t happen much.

Yeah, his post-game interview the other night was the first time I heard him talk. He speaks with an accent, but he’s very easy to understand.
Of note: He’s one of those guys whose lips barely move when he talks.

That’s so funny! As I’ve mentioned before, I coach Little League and there are quite a few moms who don’t want their kid to play catcher. Goofus Jr ended up being a catcher mainly because a few years ago: a) He liked getting dirty, b) He wasn’t scared of the ball or the batter and c) His mom didn’t complain.
2008 Giants: Scrappy! Scrappy! Joy! Joy!
Actually, his mom was an old softball catcher, so she was proud, although we both worried when he had a concussion this season after taking a couple of foul tips of his mask. (Eerily similar to Matheny’s ordeal, though not as severe; he was dizzy and temporary loss of hearing.)
