Sanchez for Rios? Huh?
Sorry to rehash Alex Rios again, but I stumbled across this in SFGATE (look below). I never heard Sanchez for Rios rumors, so I think Schulman is wrong here. That being said, I'd consider trading Sanchez for a Rios type player. Personally, I'd prefer a player with more power and less speed, but that's definitely a deal I would have been open to

How grateful are Giants fans that general manager Brian Sabean did not say yes to Toronto and send Jonathan Sanchez to the Jays for outfielder Alex Rios? Sanchez continues to be in high demand, but it will take much more than a Rios type now to get Sanchez. For the record, the 25-year-old lefty prefers to stay put.

Just to be clear
All I had heard was Lincecum for RIos rumors (with a dash of Cain) this past offseason and nothing about Sanchez for Rios. Sanchez for Rios would have been met with enthusiasm IMO

I saw this as well
I was going to use it in your Lincecum/Rios post that no matter what is printed or said in the papers, we as outsiders don’t have the faintest idea of what is being discussed and given serious thought. Maybe it was Sanchez all along, since Sabean didn’t address any player by name. We don’t know and we may never know, which is why I didn’t agree with your previous post. This is the absolute last I will post on any Rios related talk, I swear.

I seem to remember Lincecum being named expressly by Sabean
but maybe not. You are definitely right about the information we are exposed to and just how much of it is speculation.

Lincecum was named expressly by Sabean
He said it during an interview w/ the Rzor & Mr. T from the winter meetings. Sabean expressly said that the Jays only wanted Lincecum, and had no interest in either Cain or a package of lesser prospects

I don't remember anything about this either
I would have to agree with Mr. Schulman, it’s a good thing he did hang on to Sanchez. If he continues his good pitching throughout this year and through next year as well, he should be a VERY hot commodity. Even hotter than corn right now!
Plus you have to take Cain’s struggles into consideration. No, Cain won’t go all Zito on us, but there’s a possibility (however slight it may be) that he doesn’t have the stuff to be part of the dominating 1-2 playoff punch that we thought he would be. Sanchez could fill that void if he keeps this up for a year or two…and a R/L combo would be even better than a R/R combo.
That being said, I wouldn’t trade any of the Lainchez trio for Rios. Dominating pitchers are too hot of a commodity to be given for just an above-average position player.

Hmm
I would have been in favor of this during the offseason. Now, not so much.
by KCE on Jul 1, 2008 4:30 PM PDT 0 recs
I think Schulman made a mistake. Sanchez was never reported to be in the mix; it was between Cain and Lincecum, then changed to Lincecum, IIRC. Or am I totally wrong?

Sanchez WAS mentioned during the offseason
for Matsui.
Another bullet dodged. Hey maybe this whole “letting young guys get regular playing time” thing that is all the rage with other teams is actually legitimate.

Thanks Giant Voodoo. I know I remember that deal being discussed!

As muchas we’ve seen sanchez blossom, and the strides he’s made in bemoing a pitcher and not a thrower, we need to hang onto him for the time being. The guy is a stud.

If the price is right
I’m perfectly fine with trading Sanchez. I’d trade him for a Matt LaPorta type prospect, or preferably something even better where we can squeeze as much value out of Sanchez as possible

absolutely agree
Sanchez can be electric and his fantastic week makes his numbers look even better, but he is just as capable of imploding with poor control.
I’d probably trade him for Alex Rios, although there are plenty of options I prefer to Rios: LaPorta, Delmon Young, and a whole host of packages that provide young offensive depth that is close to the bigs. A nice SS prospect w/ power would be just fantastic, too bad every team feels that way =(

I would too.
But if we’re making wishlists, how about a corner infielder for equal or greater value?

Schulman is getting his rumors mixed up. It was Lincecum for Rios. Lincecum for Encarnacion and Bruce or Votto.
Sanchez for Godzilla.
Sanchez was also rumored in a deal for Manny like 2 years ago I believe.

If it was Sanchez for Rios, Sabean would have done it in a second, and nobody would have disagreed with it. Toronto might make that trade now, but they never would have done it before seeing the 2008 Jonathan Sanchez edition. And needless to say, if Sanchez did what he was doing this year for the Blue Jays, we would all be blaming Dave Righetti and calling for his head.

Sanchez/Lowry for Crede
I remember these rumors, but not Rios. I also remember that my brother saw something on a White Sox board regarding Timmay for Crede. (This was after the Rios thing had played out, and I informed him that the Sox fans were smoking serious crack)
At the time Crede was an unknown due to his surgery, and we didn’t know Sanchez was going to mature so quickly this year either. But, I thought it would have been a good deal, and am still somewhat if favor of it.
by toofruss on Jul 2, 2008 9:21 AM PDT 0 recs
No.
Getting an older player for Jonathan Sanchez makes no sense IMO unless the guy is a really good player. Joe Crede doesn’t fit that description.

Crede is 30. Sanchez is 25.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

hmm ya and so?
All I wanted was to see what type of “older” player would be considered equitable.
