I don't know. At least Zito was throwing in the high 80s, right?

I mean, other than the 4 earned runs, it wasn’t horrible?

I'll rephrase
4 earned runs across 5 innings isn’t HORRIBLE from a 5th starter standpoint. Make that 3 ER’s and it’s not the end of the word (and only an inning away from a quality start).
But, frankly, I think he was lucky to get away with only the 4. 6 Strikeouts in 5 innings tho! (which is kinda odd).

i voted for the “gets injured and never really returns” option. but i think i should note that i see this option more as the “gets ‘injured’” option.

I saw at least one 90 mph reading!
I don’t know if the radar gun has been goosed or not, but if it hasn’t, that is a good sign. He got squeezed a little. He was Castillo’ed. He got no run support. And you have to give some credit to the Cubs. They are a good hitting team, patient and with a good approach to Zito. It was definitely not his worst outing of the year and if you squint hard enough you might see some positives in it.
by out machine on Jul 1, 2008 1:03 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
At least they turn on the radar gun now. When I went to the A’s game where he pitched, the gun was off the entire game until he came out.

I think we’re all jumping to conclusions about Barry Zito too soon. Furreals, one and a half years into a contract that nobody thought was a bad idea at the time just isn’t long enough.
Barry Zito’s a nice guy, and he does yoga and stuff.

the thing i feel bad about is he seems like a nice guy. and how many guys would be up for post-game interviews all the time, even at home where he does so poorly. i think we just need to bottle zito on the road and bring that home for his starts.
unrelated… i have 2 tix for tonight in the arcade, i cant go due to work. any interest?
by esqdg on Jul 1, 2008 1:54 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Really?
I can’t believe 61 people (as of this posting) voted that they thought Zito would continue at a 4.50-5.50 ERA for the rest of his contract. The only two reasonable answers are the first two (which is why the teacher always puts those first). I went with the trade +$80m, but I could easily see the DFA.
Then again, I thought Steve Hosey would be our RF throughout the 90’s. So I could be wrong.

by Lyle on Jul 1, 2008 2:15 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
it sort of wins by default.
1) zito getting better – not likely
2) zito getting traded – seems even less likely. I mean, I don’t think you could get a team to take him + 80M. Maybe Zito + 100M, but at that point you are just DFAing him.
3) They are not going to DFA him and eat 100M. I don’t even think the Giants are going to eat $80M
4) He’s not going to retire
Others: He might get injured, but I doubt he takes a full time bullpen role. Either case is too random to predict.
The fact is, the Giants are stuck with the vast majority of his contract. No matter what. They are going to need a 5th starter, and he is not really worse than Misch or Correia or anyone elses 5th starter for that matter.

The most ridiculous option?
Isn’t that the “regain his stuff and confidence to become the Cy Zito of yore” option?
Only 890 games until the end of Zito's contract

I need another option.
It should read: Pitches well enough to have an ERA of 6 for the rest of his contract. Bochy refuses to bench him because he’s a GAMER.

It depends on how long we have Brian "The Nightmare" Sabean as GM
‘Cause if he’s still around at the end there’s a decent chance Sabe’s re-up’s him for another 7 years, $813 million (that offer’s not quite as bad as it looks – I’m estimating what the dollar will be worth 6 years from now)
Is there anyway we can get Isiah Thomas a job with the Lakers?
