Timmy to Grace SI Cover (MLB Midseason Awards Edition)
Baggs is saying in the Merc that Timmy Franchise will grace the cover of next week's SI.
Over at SI.com, Tom Verducci has posted the 1000+ word feature that run along side the cover shot.
Who woulda thought that a Giant would be the coverboy for the SI midseason MLB awards?
By the way, as with all Timmy news, they're gonna love this one up here in Seattle. At least the M's got an 8th inning set up man for the worst team in baseball instead of the best local player in history!
I'm not sure I'm a fan of Verducci's super creative nicknames (The Freak, Tiny Tim), but it's nice to see some national love and an in depth profile of our boy.
BTW - this may be the cover shot (below).

SI Cover Jinx?
Please, for the love of God, NO. If Timmy goes on the DL with a freakish injury his first start after this issue comes out, I’m hunting down Tom Verducci with a sight rifle.

More rest so we can see him do his best vs. meaningless 2-inning performance that even if it goes well doesn’t mean squat for the Giants. I will pick the first one.

Love this
“In my 13 years in the big leagues,” San Francisco infielder Rich Aurilia says, “this is the only guy I’ve seen who really is worth the hype. The first one. The real deal. And the reason I say that is not just the stuff. That’s obvious to everybody. But it’s the fact that he’s a great kid who is smart, who is willing to learn and who respects the game. I really mean that. He’s an easy kid to root for, and I don’t say that just because he’s my teammate. He’s going to be great for this game.’‘

Although I haven’t officially cleared visiting rights with sharksrog, here is the email from Chris Lincecum.
http://baseballevolution.com/richard/chrislincecum.html
It says 52.
by timmeh on Jul 1, 2008 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I stand corrected
I stand corrected about Chris’ not having disputed the age 55 thing. I didn’t recall his saying anything about it one way or the other, but I have indeed read the e-mail and forgot about what Chris clearly said there.
In fact, it was through Richard that I was able to meet Chris on-line and ultimately in person (both before Tim’s major league debut and up in Seattle three months ago).
Sorry about my lack of memory on the specifics. I’m still pretty impressed even at age 52. Chris turned 60 last September, and he’s still in great shape. Chris’ career was eliminated when he fell from a scaffolding, injuring his back.
Chris thinks Tim’s older brother Sean had the goods too, but Sean twice hurt his right shoulder playing football. Amazingly, Sean (whose middle name is Leo, after his grandfather, the same as Chris’ middle name) is a big guy, while as the article implied, Tim and Chris are about the same size and build.
by sharksrog on Jul 1, 2008 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Great memory!
Great memory, Groug! I first read 55 (which Chris didn’t dispute), but I have since seen 52, which is probably more likely. Either way, can you imagine Tim in his 50’s as Livan Hernandez? Then in his 60’s he’ll break out the knuckle ball and pitch another five years. :)

Chris
Chris would be amenable to the idea if in addition to a very nice salary the Giants paid him enough to cover the pension credit he would miss out on by leaving Boeing. I frankly think that would be a bargain, and I see Chris’ greatest value as a roving pitching coach throughout the organization, since the younger he gets guys, the more he can do with a guy.
I also think Chris could be the mechanics guy for Barry Zito, with Rick Peterson being Barry’s Zen man. Chris would be most amenable to a situation in which he could not only help the Giants’ pitchers but see a high percentage of Tim’s starts.
One thing the article mentioned that I’m not sure about the effect of. It said something to the effect that someone wondered why all pitchers couldn’t be taught to pitch like Tim, but that other pitchers weren’t as athletic as Tim. I would think flexibility would be the key, and Chris has had Tim doing strength and flexibility exercises for his core since Tim was a little guy.
Chris is proud that he took one youngster who was kind of the last kid chosen type of player, taught the kid to pitch and had the kid turn out to be a good pitcher (although clearly not compared to Tim). Chris loved that the kid and his parents were so excited by his unexpected success.
Part of my package deal to entice Tim to sign a 10-year contract a year ago was for the Giants to utilize Chris’ talents as part of the deal. To be frank, the Giants likely could then have wrapped Tim AND his dad up for a decade at a price that is a lot lower than they are likely to pay now.
Of course the risk factor with Tim was presumably higher in early 2007. But as the article mentions, those in the know feel Tim is a better-than-average injury risk avoidance candidate. I would have taken the gamble.
It certainly would have been less risky than their foolish offer to Barry Zito turned out to be. I get upset when I consider what the Giants SHOULD be doing compared to what they HAVE done.
At least they have seemingly done a very good job at acquiring youngsters beginning with Tim. And of course, Matt Cain at #25 overall in 2002 was no slouch pick, either. Not to mention Jonathan Sanchez in something like the 24th round.
