Pablito to play in Future's Game
Catching prospect Pablo Sandoval has been added to the world team roster for the July 13 All-Star Futures Game in New York.
Combined with Angel, the Giants are going to have some serious beef on that World team. Combined with the two US reps, that makes 4 Giants in the game. Finally a reason to watch the stupid thing!
And now is time for the filler. Go Pablito Go! No, serious, Go Pablito Go!

For those of us that aren’t in the know…who are the other 3 Giants reps going to be?

Kevin Pucetas and Nate Schierholtz for USA, and Angel Villalona for the World along with Pablito.

Still don't get the Nate thing
Hasn’t he gone beyond prospect to “would be playing on any other team” status?

If you ask me, yes. But I don’t have a job with the Giants front office, and so it goes.

Personally, I’d rather have Nate starting RF for the Giants than Randy Winn at this point, but I think a lot of folks here are overstating his credentials. It’s not like he’s banging the door down in AAA. On his repeat season in the PCL, Nate currently is: 41st in the league in BA; 60th in OBP; 22nd in SLG; 27th in OPS; tied for 31st in HRs. In all of these categories teammate and career minor leaguer Scott McLain leads him by a comfortable margin. In many of them teammate Ivan Ochoa (who was found so lacking in being a capable major league fill-in the Brian Bocock leapt over him) is leading Nate.
This isn’t exactly the major statement season (NO PUNY MINOR LEAGUE CAN HOLD ME!) that some are mkaing it out to be for Nate. He’s not destroying the league; he’s not dominating the league; he’s not proving that he has nothing left to learn in the minors. He’s having a nice little year, in a repeat season in a very offense friendly league. Beyond that I wouldn’t want to venture too far.

I still think
that his career could wind up being similar to Garrett Anderson’s

And that ain’t bad at all.

He certainly could
Anderson’s minor league career was brief and not exactly overwhelming statistically. He could have Randy Winn’s career as well. But that’s quite different from suggesting that it’s unjustified for Schierholtz to still be in Fresno. With all due respects to Rich, how many other major league teams would really have made a spot for him in their starting OF based on his ‘07 and/or ‘08 seasons?

As I noted before...
...the fact that the US team is also planned to be the US Olympic team suggests that the Giants are not planning to call Schierholtz up any time soon. Obviously he could be replaced on the team if necessary, but I have to imagine that they took into account the immediate plans for these players.

For the record, I deleted Joe T’s post on this same subject. Even though his was first and had an awesome Caddyshack reference, this title was more descriptive and neither had an advantage in meaningful discussion; both had nothing but some “blah blah blah” from Baron.

We actually do that fairly regularly if two subjects are posted at the same time and no meaningful discussion has taken place yet.

Ah it's a proud day in the household
Of course it’s old hat at this point. He was a “Futures” All Star back when he was just a teenager (of course he did strike out on 3 pitches in his only AB, mumble mumble mumble, urgh uh.. ..Go Get ‘Em, Son!)
I’m actually going to be in NY that day, too. Maybe I need to drop by the stadium and give some fatherly words of encouragement.

Bring some sandwiches...
No way the World Team’s spread will be big enough to hold both Angel and Pablito.

I’ll Fedex some homemade brownies though I can’t make them with Kaluha because Angel is still a minor.

Is this a sign that the Giants’ minor league system really is improving? Or, is it something to be worried about – I mean wasn’t Brian Bocock in last years game?

ick, ya you’re right bocock played last year
I wanted to adopt, but all the good looking babies were taken

He was yes. But Bocock actually had an impressive start to the year in Augusta. And Sosa was in the Future’s Game too.

Don't know if this was mentioned in the other Future's thread
But the Giants had no say in who is chosen for the games. The MLB along with Baseball America put together the list of future players.
As non-dominating Nate was last season, BA thought enough of him that they mentioned his name when he was left off the Top 20 list for the PCL, they felt he might have made it if not for so many. That is probably why he was put on the futures team.
Still, as Roger noted, there are a lot of people here who are over hyping Schierholtz. He’s having a nice season, and I think he can do well in the majors, but he hasn’t really been doing it in the minors to the degree that makes him a sure thing. Heck, he isn’t even hitting what Todd Linden hit in AAA.
So yes, we may THINK he will do well, but the stats thus far says, “not so much”. I think the MLE for him is about what Winn is hitting now, so they are equivalent for the most part offensively, with Nate with more power, Winn with more speed. So why get rid of the sure thing and take the risk that Nate might do just as well, you normally would do that easily when it looks like the player can outplay the guy he is replacing, but Nate looks, right now, to be about the same player as Winn, only much younger.
Now, I know some people will see that and say “Trade Winn”, but I would rather that Sabean wait for a good trade of Winn and get some prospects before starting Nate’s clock when it doesn’t mean much. If Sabean keeps him in the minors this season then trade Winn either during the off-season or early next season – when he won’t have another year of the contract hanging over the head of the other team – then we will control Nate that much longer and hopefully the Giants will have turned things around by then and he’ll be leading the offense.
In addition, we can’t just screw with the offense right now, we need to win enough games for the pitchers so that they don’t get too discouraged or start to over throw their pitches to get three strikes with one pitch, and lose command. The team as constituted now is about a .500 team, so I think it won’t harm the future much holding onto Winn until we get something good for him in a trade and holding off starting Nate’s MLB clock..

Interesting… I could have sworn that the team as consituted now was a sub-.500 team. But I stand corrected. I guess their record doesn’t mean anything.
