Sabean must come through...
I think the Giants are gradually going in the right direction...BUT at the all star break, if sabean does not get rid of MOST of the old players, everything will be lost. Currently we stand at 28-35, and are tearing it up. We would currently have the 7th round pick in next year's draft. That is not what we want. We want a early top 5 pick. Preferbly top 3 pick. This year is lost. Ray Durham is batting .306. We MUST take advantage. Same with Randy Winn. No onr is going to want to give up a A,B,C prospect for one of those players. We need to package players together to certain teams. We are also trying to trade Tasch, Chulk, WALKER, tHREETS, pretty much our OLDER bullpen. Threets is young and is a prospect which gives him decent value. If we could pull something like... Winn, Chulk, and Durham for a couple of B level prospects that would be great, and if we could trade walker, threets, aurilia and taschner for a B level prospect, then we would have 3 positon prospects to be excited about, and our young players would get to play on a daily basis We would have a worse record which would give us a better draft pick. This would lighten up our cap for the next offseasons to come to pick up FAs. Baseball is won by young teams who want to win. LOok at te yANKEES. look at the marlins and rays. Schierholtz would come up and Denker and Velez would split time at second base. Hopefully Vizquel and Burris can split the time, and Bowker could play daily. Our pitching in the major leagues, and in the farm is good enough. Our offense is whats holding us back.
Bengie: i dont think bengie should be traded b.c. i could not watch steve holm catch for a whole season. He isn't blocking anyone. I do think we should trade Molina next yearfor a B level prospect if he can stay healthy, and keep his performance up. This would also give Sandoval and or Posey an extra year to develop.
Do it Sabean! Ignore the record and work your magic. You're doing the right thing

Cap?
I really hate it when ignorant morons can’t get it through their skulls that MLB has NO SALARY CAP!
Down in Front Meat!
While we’re at it let’s trade Zito and a few draft picks!
I am growing weary of the mentions of salary cap in the sport but I think calling people “ignorant morons” is a bit harsh. At least save it for chatting over pozole with friends at dinner. ;)

That cap = payroll.

I assume the same, but I do wonder if these mentions of salary cap and trading draft picks and that are just a quick glossing over assumption that all sports work the same way.

Ignorance and down syndrome
I should appoligize for calling DuikeBuike (why did I read that as Duke Bukkake?) an ignorant moron. He’s not, as he’s probably just a 18-24 y.o. who hasn’t been schooled on the finer points of the game. That being said, I believe anyone who claims to be a baseball fan and refers to runs scored as “points” should be shot in front of the Willy Mays statue.

Look, Goofus’ clock is running out already, and clearly no one wants natto (believe me, we’ve tried!). The best we can hope for is offering arbitration to xanthan in the offseason, getting a compensation, and maybe getting a rule 5 pick from Lookout Landing next year.

For the two people who noticed I haven't been posting much this season...
After a spate of unedifying posts during Spring Training, I was put on waivers and claimed by Gawker.
"When Jackson Williams thinks of how many times Madison Bumgarner has tried to kill Tyler Walker..."
My first reaction to this post is, “Wow, what random use of the capital letters.”
My next reaction is to the premise that Sabean HAS to do something with the vets. The current team is playing well because of contribution from both the old and young guys. I would like to see Durham, Winn and Aurilia traded (and I love to see Roberts traded), but have trouble getting excited about B level prospects when those guys are contributing to a team that’s playing some ggood ball.
I’m a fan who always feels we can build for the future without chucking everything now. I still like to see the team win when I go to a game. After the Giants draft, I feel like we’ve got players in the system who project to all the current and projected holes (Villalona or Bowker at 1B, Gillaspie at 3B, Burris at SS, Denker or Noonan at 2B, Posey at C and Schierholz in RF).
Unless the guys you want to trade are going to bring in prospects that are better than what we have, I’m ok with letting this season continue to please. My only fear is Bochy getting too vet-happy if things get tighter.
2008 Giants: A steaming pile of scrap!

yea ... not too cool
I dont think anyone wouldr really disagree with much of what you have to say. But its not realistic to believe that we can turn a package of winn, durham and a relieve for a prospect. Too much salary.
Would it be great if Sabes could shed some of the older players, if for no other reason as to just get the kids more time, absolutely. But whether he is able to do so remains to be seen. The market for vets still hasnt been determined yet. Wait til July … we’ll know more then.

This Cry To Sell Now! Sell Now! Sell Now! Who Cares What We Get!
Is like a stock market panic and has as much thought and planning as well. Yes, it could be wise to do some selling, but only if we get something we want in return.
The Giants have already placed thier arbitration eligable middle relievers on the market. (Hennessey, Walker, and Chulk). I believe the Giants will also place their expiring contracts infielders on the market (Durham, Vizquel, and Aurilia) once they conclude that they will definately be both below .500 and more the 5 games out at the trade deadline and therefore not in a postion to compete for the division championship.
I do not see the Giants putting Bengie Molina on the market under any circumstances this year. I see the Giants planning on Bengie being their catcher in 2009 and again trying to compete in 2009. We simply do not have an in house option that will be ready next year and with Posey and Sandoval in the pipeline for 2010 is makes no sense to move Molina and then try and find someone else for 2009.
Finally I have come to the conclusion that the Giants are not likely to trade Winn just to unblock Schierholtz. The Giants will only make this trade if they get someone of they believe is of equal value and ready to play every day at the MLB level. The Giants will trade the above middle relievers and infielders for non top tier prospects but they will not trade Randy this cheaply. I only see Randy going if say a quality ready to start at the MLB level SS comes back in return.
I don’t think anybody has ever actually said “I don’t care what we get.”
It’s small rhetorical twists like this that make things feel just a little underhanded sometimes.

No. Randy Winn does not warrant an everyday MLB player in return. That’s totally, totally unrealistic. A B-level prospect would be great. Plus Nate gets to play.

This Isn't Fantasy Baseball, It Is The Real Deal!
Randy can play well above average MLB defense at all three outfield positions and provides well above average offense in CF and average offense at either corner. Any competative MLB team in need of a starting outfielder with excess quality young infielders to trade should be willing to make such a move.
by giantsrainman on Jun 9, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions
you let me know when that happens
and i’ll gladly admit that I was wrong.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Randy plays above average (not well above average) defense in the corners and close to average in centerfield, and he only actually has a plus bat if he’s playing center.
I think you’re giving him too much credit. He’s a good player. But he’s also a pretty common type of player. And that hurts his value.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Help me out here guys
I’m confused. giantsrainman says that Winn is worth someone “of equal value and ready to play every day at the MLB level”, which, by definition, is exactly what Randy Winn is worth. Where’s the argument? Did I miss something?
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
The problem is that his worth does not necessarily equal his value. There are a lot of Randy Winn types out there, and teams looking for Randy Winn types can likely get one for less, and probably younger. If there weren’t a lot of Randy Winn types out there, he wouldn’t be recognized as “league average.”
You have to play the market, not the product. That’s how I see it, anyway.

Of Course The Matket Matters
There does indeed have to be demand and you need to look at the available supply to fill that demand. I see NL demand in San Diego, Chicago (do you really think they are happy with Edmonds and Johnson?), Atlanta, and maybe even Florida (still searching for a decent CFer) and NY (will Alou ever be healthy?) I see AL demand in Detroit, Cleveland, and Toronto. The supply competition I see right now is just Nady and Bay. This demand seems to me to be greater then the available supply.

The only fantasy is your trade demands, rainman
Is it going to be like this every season, with you making lots of outrageous trade proposals like these, overestimating the worth of every Giant vet to other teams and underestimating the value of every other team’s prospects?
Like here, when you said Matt Morris was “exactly what a contending team wants” due to his “gile and playoff experience”, but completely disregard his peripheral stats and downside. Or here where you said we could trade Morris for Yunel Escobar. Or when you refused to give up on the Morris & Bonds to Seattle for Jones & Balentien trade you pulled out of your ass, suggesting it again and again.
Maybe you should try to keep from making snap decisions based on emotions, like you did with this diary here, where you proclaimed Jonathan Sanchez had lost any chance of being in the rotation this year. How’s that working out for you?

EVERYBODYCALMDOWN!
giantsrainman has made a very uncontroversial statement (to which you can disagree, but still) and is getting gang banged for no reason. I was here for the giantsrainman VS. world wars, and I have had my share of arguments with him, but it seems like every discussion involving him goes something like this:
Rainman: Point.
Poster: Counter-point.
Rainman: Counter-counter-point.
Seven different posters: You are a crazy horse-fucking son of a bitch.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
I think you forgot one detail (emphasis added by me):
Rainman: Point.
Poster: Counter-point.
Rainman: Counter-counter-point involving Poster’s supposed irrational hatred of Brian Sabean clouding their judgement.
Seven different posters: You are a crazy horse-fucking son of a bitch.
I know that just because you responded to me doesn’t mean this comment is directed at me personally, but just in case…
I was careful, as I always am, to criticize the statements made by the poster, and not the poster himself—no name-calling, no supposition about his personal life, the only insults directed specifically at his baseball-related comments, and nothing else. Those who’ve been around here a long time know I find this an important distinction (See: The Great Banning Controversy of Aught-Six).

But since you’ve mentioned it…You* * didn’t attack him personally, but you put in a lot of effort just to point out his past mistakes, which contributes little to the discussion, and is pretty close to attacking him personally. And then there’s PPB with his pictures.
Anyway, my point is, that while once it used be like you described it, people seem to have taken EliminateMe’s advice and just started skipping to the horse-fucking part. And that seems wrong.
- * Just using you as an example for someone who is usually calm and rational and mega-awesome but seems to me too harsh with GR.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Obviously I disagree re: my comment (I point out his past mistakes to in order to impugn his credibility, just as one might with Sabean, or a witness in a court of law, or a political candidate), but I do appreciate the constructive criticism (though I prefer to think of myself as “Super-Mega-Awesome” ).

although my cube mates wonder at the muffled guffaws coming from my area.
It's worth considering
that anything you can say about Randy Winn today you could say about him 3 years ago when we acquired him (when you could also say he was 3 years younger) and we got him for a backup catcher and an ex-prospect pitcher with a bum elbow. How much do you believe the market for him has increased in those three years?
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
Back to the topic at hand . . .
I support as much as anyone the idea of moving veterans at the deadline. Durham and Winn’s trade value, and perhaps Molina’s may never be higher than they’ll be between now and the end of July. That being said, several of the kids quoted in the papers over the weekend have mentioned how much they’ve learned about situational hitting from watching the vets.
Meet my three little friends: Timmy, Dirty, and Cain
How about this.. trade sanchez and winn to the Yankees
http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2008/06/five_yankee_tra.html
I’m posting this on multiple fan posts becase I thought it was interesting but not worthy of it’s very own fan post. I also cannot find a topic that fits with this perfectly so just check out the link.
I'm an ESPN Insider!
I think those are bad trades.
Yanks trade Hideki Matsui, Jose Tabata and Alberto Gonzalez to the Giants for Jonathan Sanchez and Randy Winn.
Cool, we get an old OF in Matsui, Tabata who might not ever hit for power, and a AAA SS who can’t hit that much for our best left-hander? I want to move Winn but why replace him with Matsui? Who’s old and injury prone? Tabata could be good one day but I’m not sure if he’ll ever hit for power and has been having “attitude problems” in AA.
A three-way trade in which the Yanks get Nick Swisher, Matt Thornton and John Danks. The White Sox get Melky Cabrera, Hideki Matsui, Ian Kennedy and Ray Durham. The Giants get Paul Konerko, Alberto Gonzalez and Shelley Duncan.
So we swap Durham for Konerko and a quad-A slugger with a AAA shortstop? Ignore the fact that Konkero has an 87 OPS+ this year and has been declining, we also pick up his remaining $24M dollar contract?
I’ve seen this link before and most fans of each team involved have bashed them as just stupid Internet TRADEZ. I don’ think they make any sense for the Giants and are nothing more than just dream scenarios.
Only a Yankees fan would suggest that Shelley Duncan actually constitutes “value” in a trade. And that’s from a fan of the team with nothing at 1B (if Bowker is in the OF).
by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 9, 2008 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions
The three-way trade is INSANELY STUPID.
Tabata is the only reason that the other trade looks remotely plausible, but given that we don’t really want Winn or Matsui, the trade is basically Tabata for Sanchez.
Would you trade Sanchez straight up for Tabata? Can Tabata play 3rd? I wouldn’t do it, even knowing that a position player is generally more valuable than a pitcher. I just think Sanchez’s value is higher. At one point, we were probably overhyping his value as a LHP with electric stuff whose FB was in the 90s.
Now, Sanchez is all that plus a 113 ERA+, a 3.70 ERA and 75/38 K/BB in 75 IP. At 25 years old and cheap. Now there’s the risk that he won’t keep it up, but that’s worth all but the best hitting prospects if you ask me.

It's ERA+ or adjusted ERA
It’s a handy stat for measuring ERA, it’s adjusted for league and park. A score > than 100 means that the pitcher is better than league average, > than 100 means worse than league average.
If you look up any pitcher on Baseball-Reference, there ERA+ is included in the statistics.

-So who won that trade? cant imagine either side is disappointed, but gun to your head, you gotta choose one side? I think you gotta say the Reds win the deal even though they gave up a potential MVP.
I’d say the Reds won because they knew they had Jay Bruce waiting to take a spot in the outfield, while the Rangers had….no one, really, to take Volquez’s spot in the rotation. The Rangers offense is incredible now (5.55 runs/game, half a run better than 2nd place Boston) but they’ve got to stop trading away pitching.
Adopted Giant: Travis Denker. Good?

I'd agree with that
but really, can anybody remember the last time a trade worked out so extravagantly for both teams involved—particularly a trade that was, face it, relatively small print at the time. This is like what prospect mavens might have wanted to see from the Garza/Young deal. And Hamilton’s story is shaping up to be a career unlike anything I’ve seen in my lifetime, a slightly less fictionalized version of The Natural.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
Those are bogus trade rumors...as for the original topic...
While I think we can all agree that it would be great for Sabean to get something for guys like Winn, Aurilia, Durham etc, I think it might also be unrealistic to expect for him to be able to trade them.
Sure they are performing right now, but they are also older, and in Durham’s case not producing in key situations. His splits with men on base are terrible. I can see us getting someone possibly decent for Winn, but as for Aurilia, Durham, Vizquel and Roberts, I really don’t seem them getting anything. Unless the Pirates want to pull another Matt Morris type of trade….but they seem to be heading in a new direction where they actually think before they make a move.
Now granted the market hasn’t really been set yet, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up at them being dealt, purely because of the money and age of the latter four. The off-season is a much more likely time for us to acquire people of talent, but that would require us trading away some of our pitching depth. Since luckily Durham, Aurilia and Vizquel will be gone after this year anyway. Hopefully whenever Roberts comes back he could play well enough to be dealt, since leadoff men with SB ability are always in demand at the deadline. Just look at how often Lofton has been traded.
I tried to read through all of this but I just couldn't
but I, for one, am certain that there is a team out there that wants “a package of Winn, Chulk, and Durham,” hell I bet there are three. In fact, I think Sabean should put together pre-made packages and entertain offers for them, rather than for individual players. If a GM calls about Chulk he would respond “Vinnie Chulk is now part of the Winn/Chulk/Durham package, what will you offer you this totally awesome package?”
Maybe somebody should put together a post complete with nonsensical use of capitalization where they suggest what players should go together to form these packages.
