Aaron King, LHP

Don’t know jack about him but that’s our 7th round pick.

by AngelWillSaveUs on Jun 6, 2008 8:41 AM PDT reply actions

Last one I’ll do as I don’t want to cut and paste too much “insider content,” as I know that is frowned upon.

Per BA:

King has all the things scouting directors love, as a 6-foot-4 lefthander who pitches in the low to mid-90s. Possibly the best lefthander in the junior college ranks, King is a strikeout pitcher, pitching off his fastball and putting hitters away with his slider. He also throws a changeup. He’s athletic on the mound and still has projection. His delivery is somewhat unconventional and causes him to be erratic at times. The question with King, at it is with most juco pitchers, is whether he will throw enough strikes. His K/BB ratio this season was close to 3/1. He will at least be given a chance as a starting pitcher in the pros. He’s a freshman at Surry and relatively new on the scouting radar, and he wasn’t drafted out of high school.

by Saustown on Jun 6, 2008 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s the first I’ve heard of him, but it sounds good to me. I like high-upside pitchers after the first few rounds. If we draft enough hard-throwers, some should pan out. Right now, our top picks need to be on hitters. Wow, I’m actually happy with this draft. Who is this Barr guy?

Also: It seems like his back leg leaves the rubber way before he releases the pitch. Hopefully that won’t be a problem with the umpires.

Scot Barnes, LHP, St. Johns

That makes 3 LHP taken this year I believe.

by AngelWillSaveUs on Jun 6, 2008 8:42 AM PDT reply actions

Barnes is BA's Top NY Prospect

...for what it’s worth. Here is their excerpt:

Barnes has had an inconsistent spring, but he pitched better down the stretch after making mechanical adjustments. He was out of sync early in the season with his delivery, causing his arm to drag and limiting his extension, and he threw across his body to compensate. He worked in the mid-80s with his fastball and struggled to command his secondary stuff. But his alignment and tempo have improved in the second half, and his fastball has climbed into the 90-92 mph range with good sink. His delivery still has a head jerk, but scouts think his quirkiness adds to his deception. He shows an average slider with good tilt and good feel for a changeup, and he uses a slow curveball as a show pitch. Barnes stands out most for his competitiveness and his aggressiveness, but opinion on him is widely mixed. He could be drafted anywhere from the third to the 10th round.

Scott Barnes's favorite player is Barry Zito. LOL

A 43rd round selection by the Washington Nationals in the 2005 amateur draft … a two-time All-WMass League selection … was named the Republican’s Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year as a senior at Cathedral after going 9-0 with a 0.13 ERA and 120 strikeouts … also hit .588 with six home runs … received Pitcher of the Year honors from the same publication as a junior in 2004 … posted an 8-1 record, 0.97 ERA and 102 strikeouts that season, to go along with a .397 average at the plate.

Personal: Scott Michael Barnes … born Sept. 5, 1987 in Springfield, Mass. ... son of Kevin and Christine Barnes … has one brother, Ryan … came to St. John’s for its academics, athletics and the proximity of the campus to New York City … lists his grandfather as the person he admires most and Barry Zito as his favorite athlete … career aspirations include Major League Baseball … majoring in sports management.

Looks like a reliever

2007: Led team with 20 appearances, all in relief… Had 3 of team’s 6 saves… Finished with a 1-4 record and 4.96 ERA… Fanned 16 batters in 32.2 innings of work… Didn’t allow a baserunner and struck out a batter in his first save of the year against Saint Mary’s (2/13)... Fired 3.0 perfect innings in his second go-round with Gaels to earn his third save of the year (4/17)... Particularly effective in 2-out situations, holding opposing batters to .158 average (6-for-38).

2006: Pitched in five games, starting four, all in the early season… Struck out 18 batters against seven walks in 23.0 innings… Went 1-0 with 4.70 ERA… Lone win was in brief relief outing vs. Santa Clara (2/7)... Had best appearance a week later vs. San Diego, allowing two hits and no earned runs in six innings (2/12)... Granted medical hardship season.

2005: Made 15 relief appearances… Finished 1-3 with 6.75 ERA… Longest outing was 3.2 innings of shutout ball at Cal Poly… Struck out three batters with no walks in that sting… Entered May with 3.50 season ERA.

CARDINAL NEWMAN HS ‘04: Earned first-team All-North Bay League and first-team All-Redwood Empire in both baseball and basketball in 2003-04… Compiled 9-0 record with 1.80, fanning 95 in 79 innings as a senior… Fired four shutouts, including a perfect game at the Adam Westcott Tournament… Team finished with a school-record 25-3 mark… Averaged 17 points, 7 rebounds per game in basketball as a senior.

PERSONAL: Born in Santa Rosa, Calif…. Economics major… Parents are Patrick & Margaret Fitzgerald, both of whom were collegiate athletes… Patrick played basketball at Hawaii-Hilo, Margaret played softball at Santa Rosa JC… Grandfather, John Fitzgerald, played for the Pirates and Cardinals organizations.

More info, Had a great 2008 season

Justin Fitzgerald, junior right-handed closer

15 SV, 3.24 ERA, 33.1 IP, 44 H, 5 BB, 35 K

His blown save and loss against Stanford on Sunday aside, the Aggies’ closer had a tremendous year in 2008. Fitzgerald broke the UC Davis all-time saves record with 19, including a conference-best 15 this year.

The Cloverdale, Calif. native, who is expected to be the first Aggie pitcher off the board, was a nightmare for opposing teams late in games all year long, helping UC Davis compile a staggering 29-2 record when leading after eight innings.

O' Sullivan's Profile from drafttracker
Fastball: O’Sullivan threw his fastball 89-90 mph. There might be room for a little more.
Fastball movement: It’s got some life, with some sink and tail down in the zone.
Curve: O’Sullivan features a hard curve, which he threw 77-79 mph.
Changeup: He threw a changeup in the 80-82 mph range with good arm speed and fade deception to it.
Control: He’s got an advanced feel for pitching and consistently throws strikes.
Poise: O’Sullivan was perfectly poised during his one inning at the showcase.
Physical Description: Not the prototypical projectable right-hander, he’s much like his older brother Sean (currently in the Angels system) in terms of being fairly physically mature.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Advanced pitchability, with two solid pitches and the potential to have at least three average pitches.
Weaknesses: Not much projection. He’s pretty physical now and it’s a question whether he’ll add much velocity in the future.
Summary: O’Sullivan, whose brother Sean is in the Angels organization, hopes to follow in his footsteps as a pitchability right-hander. There’s not a whole lot of projection for him, but he does have the chance to throw three Major League average pitches.

Barr: Well, Brian, there’s still some good pitching here. Or how about this first baseman—
Sabean: THAT’S ENOUGH! I’ve had it with this crap.
[Sabean bullrushes Barr, who stumbles and falls backwards, out the open window, falling to the street below.]
Sabean: Somebody get me some goddamn centerfielders!
Scout: Well, there’s this one guy from Western Oklahoma…
Sabean: No, you make the pick. Fuck work. I’m drinkin’.

Just read some comments over on Project Prospect...

Adam Loberstein, who sounds like an A’s fan, begrudgingly admits he thinks the Giants stole the show on Day 1 with their first 4 picks.

by baseballjunkie on Jun 6, 2008 9:56 AM PDT reply actions

vs. the A's

I think it’s clear he liked some of the other team’s drafts better. As he should: it’s hard to beat out teams with lots of high picks when you have no extras and are missing a compensation pick.

by wcw on Jun 6, 2008 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

For the people lazy to look it up

City by the Bay

As if missing out on Smoak by one pick wasn’t a big enough slap in the face, A’s fans now have to deal with the fact that their cross-bay rivals had one of the day’s best showings.

The Giants were in a win-win situation - they could take Smoak or catcher Buster Posey with the No. 5 overall pick and look like geniuses either way. Looking to get the most for their selection, San Francisco went for the man who can play nine positions as opposed to just one - fair enough.

The Posey selection was just the beginning.

With their next two picks, the Giants picked up a pair of proven college bats: Conor Gillaspie (No. 37) and Roger Kieschnick (No. 82). Holding a trio of talented hitters to its credit, San Francisco decided to roll the dice on shortstop Brandon Crawford with its next selection (No. 117), which could prove to be a good value pick over time.

Across the bay, Oakland went with Jemile Weeks, Tyson Ross, and Peter Paramore with its first three selections. These picks made for a pretty good showing, but San Francisco steals the show this year. In a somewhat related note, the A’s took Weeks in-between probably my two favorite guys to root for—Smoak and Brett Wallace. Oh well.

No hardware just yet

Although the Giants had a great first day, they certainly haven’t locked up any kind of top-draft honors—their success has just been the most annoying success for me.

Horwitz's career path is supremely unusual

I love me an NDFA who does anything in the minors, but usually they drop out of baseball before they make it out of double-A, if they even get that far. Horwitz has been a very, very pleasant surprise, and even such he’s not much of a bet to go far. He doesn’t really have a defensive position, and his one skill is hitting for average. I’d say his upside is professional pinch-hitter.

Though I would really, really like to be wrong.

Interesting Scouting report on Eifel

SCOUTING REPORT: The powerfully-built Eifel may be from Dominican University, a little-known Division III college in Illinois , but he dominated the Georgia Collegiate League like no one else, going 5-1, 1.05 with 15 walks and 57 strikeouts in 43 innings. A former catcher, he overmatched hitters with a fastball that was a steady 88-92 mph all summer long, and topped out at 95 in the league’s post-season tournament. He mixed in a curve and changeup, had good mechanics and wasn’t afraid to move hitters off the plate.

Big Leagues calling Royals’ Carter Bell
Parksville prospect projected to be 7th Canadian chosen in MLB 2008 draft
Nanaimo Daily News
Published: Monday, May 19, 2008

Carter Bell knows exactly where he’ll be June 5-6: at home on his computer.

The talented B.C. Premier Baseball League player for the Parksville Royals is a candidate for the Major League Baseball draft.

It’s a fun but nerve-racking time for any of the top prospects. For those with professional aspirations, June 5-6 are tell-tale days for a player’s future in the sport.

Of the four major professional leagues in North America, baseball’s draft is the biggest. The 2006 draft lasted 50 rounds with more than 1,000 players being chosen.

Draft day is an emotional time for the eligible players and their families. Teams can promise you the moon but until you see your name on the computer screen, there are no sure things. Dreams can be shattered.

Parksville Royals head coach Dave Wallace said generally teams are pretty good about assessing players’ chances of being drafted but caution them about getting too excited about the process.

“Most team, from what I understand, treat the kids very fairly,” he said. “They’re very honest and they don’t make promises. Sometimes parents will read things. Hey, it’s hard not to think you’re going to get drafted when all of these people are paying all this attention to you. We’re talking about 17-year-old kids. That’s a tough situation. It’s an emotional roller coaster for all of their Grade 12 year.”

Bell is a Canadian junior national team member and on the radar screens of pro and college scouts.

A shortstop, he’s the seventh-highest ranked Canadian player. Catcher and third baseman Brett Lawrie and right-handed pitcher Stosh Wawrzasek, both of the BCPBL Langley Blaze, are ranked No. 1 and 2.

Based on the team interest, Bell should be drafted. No less than 25 of the 30 MLB teams have talked to him.

“I’ve had quite a few house visits, meetings, dinners out with teams,” Bell said. “I’ve had meetings with all of those teams to see where they see me and where I see myself in their organization. It gets more exciting every day it gets closer.”

With a scholarship to Oregon State already locked up, Bell has something to fall back on but the draft is where he has fixed his focus. He’s confident he’ll be picked but he’s unsure in which round.

“It’s hard to say but I’m hoping in the top 15 rounds. I’m staying home from school those two days,” said Bell. “It will be good.”

Jason Jarvis, RHP, Lincoln (Indy)
BA rated Jarvis as the best high school pitching prospect in the state of Arizona prior to the 2006 draft, and the second best pitching prospect in the state overall behind Mark Melancon. Jarvis scared away potential employers with lofty bonus demands (the Angels took a 25th round shot-in-the-dark), and he headed to Chandler-Gilbert CC after decommitting from San Diego. Jarvis then transferred to Arizona State midway through his freshman season, and immediately became the best arm on the Sun Devils’ staff. He took over closer duties as soon as he arrived in Tempe, putting up a 27 IP, 29 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 4 BB, 19 K line while setting a school record with 11 saves. Jarvis blew a four run 9th inning league against UC Irvine in the College World Series, and the Anteaters went on to eliminate ASU in extra innings.

Jarvis was off to an inauspicious start to his sophomore year, allowing 6 hits and 1 run against a 5-0 K/BB ratio in 3.2 IP over his first 6 appearances. He was ruled academically ineligible on March 13th after cheating on an assignment in an online music course. He cheated on an assignment in an online music course. He cheated. On an assignment. In an online music course. Like every good student he blamed it on a learning disability and ridiculed the school’s administration, only he did it through a press release on his website (check it out, it’s good stuff). Jarvis dropped out of school and petitioned MLB for entry into the 2008 draft, which was granted to him on March 20th. He signed on with the Lincoln Salt Dogs of the independent American Associate to gain exposure, and has yet to appear in a game for them.

Jarvis typically operates with a low-90’s fastball, a hard slider and a good changeup. He’s a durable workhorse and holds his stuff into the later innings when he starts (he pitched out of ASU’s bullpen to fill a need). There have been maturity questions about Jarvis dating back to high school, and his college experience only reinforces those questions. Jarvis has a good arm and is a solid top five rounds talent, but he’s a classic case of a guy with a million dollar arm and a two cent head. Well, that might be a bit extreme; perhaps a five hundred thousand dollar arm and a two cent head is more accurate. At least he isn’t a criminal.

Interesting note on Price

In the 2006 Big 12 championship against Missouri, Price hit a big home run, and when the third baseman didn’t move out of his way during his trot, he lowered his shoulder and gave him a bump. Fight, with full-blown punches ensued.

Although I don’t know who ‘won’ (both were ejected), guess who the third baseman was?

Brock Bond.

Stadler and Long are the only two Virginians named first team Louisville Slugger Pre-Season All-Americans, as named by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Stadler as LHP, Long as a 2-way player (LHP/1B).

Stadler is an 18-year-old senior at reigning AAA state champ James River. He was first team All State as an outfielder last year as well as honorable mention All State as a pitcher. (Which makes me wonder why Collegiate Baseball didn’t include him in the 2-way category, but I won’t quibble.) He was also Times-Dispatch All Metro Player of the Year as a junior.

Long is 19 and a towering, intimidating force on the mound and at the plate for St. Anne’s Belfield in Charlottesville.

St. Petersburg made sense to second baseman Correy Figueroa. Figueroa went to Florida High in Tallahassee and could have stayed local or at least attended a Panhandle school. But he felt the right thing to do was head south.

“I just liked what they were doing down here,’’ said Figueroa, whose twin, Cole, plays at Florida. “I came down to visit and liked the coaches. And the beaches were nearby. We don’t have that in Tallahassee.’‘

Keith Law ranks us at No.1

Best drafts

1. San Francisco Giants

Buster Posey falling to them at No. 5 was part luck, but the Giants also had the guts to take him. Posey reportedly is asking for $12 million. Sandwich pick Conor Gillaspie should have gone in the first round, and Roger Kieschnick has first-round potential despite mediocre performances. Keep an eye on fifth-rounder Edwin Quirarte, a reliever from Cal State Northridge with big-time sink on his fastball and an improving splitter.

Scouting Report - Defensive Catcher

C Aaron Lowenstein (RH – .179-0-6-2) is one of the better defensive players at his position in college baseball, especially at throwing out baserunners (10-21 this year, 19-42 last season). Lowenstein is above average at blocking pitches. He has slumped this season after hitting .296 last year and will usually bat 9th. Although he only has one SAC bunt this year, Lowenstein is a good bunter with 27 SAC bunts the previous two seasons. If Irvine does use another catcher this weekend, Lowenstein’s backup is Francis Larson, who is a much better hitter and is solid defensively.

Scouting Report from mlb.com for a guy this late

Player Name: D.J. Hicks
Position: First Baseman
School: Lake Brantley HS (Fla.)
School Type: High school
Academic Class: Senior
Birthdate: 4/2/90
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 228 lbs.
Bats: Left
Throws: Right
Report Date(s): 02/26/08
Game(s): Winter Springs HS

Hitting Ability: Not really a fast-twitch muscle guy, Hicks does consistently square up the ball and drives it to all fields. He has good pitch recognition and takes healthy cuts at the plate.
Power: He uses leverage for power and it grades as plus, plus, with the ability to hit it out to all fields.
Running Speed: He’s got below-average speed.
Base running: He has decent instincts on the basepaths with a general idea of what to do.
Arm Strength: His arm is average.
Fielding: He’s not going to wow you at first base, but he can hold his own.
Range: He’s got average range.
Physical Description: Hicks is a big kid, with room to fill out. He’s got large hands, long limbs and is fairly developed physically.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: His size and his projection, particularly his power.
Weaknesses: He can’t run and he’s limited to first base defensively.
Summary: If you’re looking for a high school bat with plus power, this might be your guy. Hicks has plenty of it from the left side of the plate, both in the present and future tense. He makes good consistent contact and can drive the ball to all fields. He’s limited to first base defensively, and while he’s no gold glover, he should hold his own there. Also a right-handed pitcher, it’s his size and power bat that should interest scouts the most.

Hopefully there is plenty of money slotted for the draft

Most of the HS players are going to be tough signs. Starting with O’Sullivan in the 10th and ending with the 7 or so position players taken in the later rounds, that’s a lot of presumably well above slot monies if they are going to make a decent run at signing them. Then there is Poseys demands at the top too, I don’t think he’ll end up getting anywhere near what he was asking for, I just hope it isn’t so much that it impacts the ability (or willingness, I’m sure they could find the money if the wanted to) to sign these other guys.
