Sandoval v. Posey

Given Posey's already advanced approached both at the plate and behind the plate, the natural starting point for him this season would seem to be in SJ.  But we currently have Pablo there and moving him up to triple A may not be necessarily the smartest move.

How do the Giants approach this situation.  Next year, assuming that Pablo is moved up to Triple A successfully, and Posey excells in Single and Double A, what then?

Thoughts>?

Pablo's got to get promoted soon

If not AAA, then to AA, at least for part of this season. Having two catchers with pop in the system is a great problem to have. You can always move Pablito to first if he keeps mashing.

and he said Sandoval is going to be promoted to AAA soon, along with Ishikawa and some others

It makes sense

The talent level in the upper levels tends to drop as teams cal up their top prospects. Sending Sandoval to Fresno in August isn’t the same as sending him there in April.

Pablo can always be moved to third or first

I think he still plays some first from time to time at SJ

If they aren't putting Sandoval in Dodd Stadium

I don’t think they would subject Posey, their prize draft pick, to Dodd either.

I wouldn't worry

Posey may be polished, but I’d start him out in his wood-bat league in low A, probably the NWL. If he pastes it, sure, promote him. That’s a problem I’d like to have.

Barring April, in which Sandoval hit like Babe Ruth, he has been above-average for about the last year, but not mashing. I wouldn’t mind seeing him stay in the Cal League all year, just as I wouldn’t mind a late-summer promotion if he continues to be above-average with the bat.

by wcw on Jun 5, 2008 5:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I dunno, Pablo was in SJ all year last year, and had a respectable .287 average while showing some pop, so I think he deserves a promotion

Posey could report to S-K if he signs quickly, but Sabean said he expects a protracted negotiation with agent Casey Close.

by wilriv21 on Jun 5, 2008 5:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would not be shocked if Posey never signs with the Giants. Nor terribly disappointed in that singular fact (but disappointed in his selection).

the guys at baseball prospectus pretty much guaranteed that he would not go back to college as nothing he could do would increase his value further… he will sign with the giants

by TimLincecumIsGod on Jun 5, 2008 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, there’s no way he can enhance his market value by going back to college for his senior year and throwing away his only real bargaining chip. They’ll get a deal done, probably something very similar to Matt Weiter’s.

Not only that, with Benji not likely to be re-signed, the major league C position is just WAITING for him in SF in a couple of years. He’d be an absolute idiot to go back to college, risk injury or a poor year. How much more could he make being signed #1, 2, or 3? I don’t think he has any bargaining chips

by allfrank on Jun 5, 2008 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There was a good article on PGCrosschecker a while back about college seniors. Pretty much, they get screwed. Even the ones that are considered good prospects usually sign for below slot because they have no leverage. There’s no chance Posey goes back to school. He could have an even better season, get drafted first overall, and still get less money.

Haven't I been reading here...

that Sandoval is a bad defender? If that is the case doesn’t he get a 1B mitt for Christmas?

by natteringnabob on Jun 5, 2008 6:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I remember reading he has a good arm and a good CS rate a while back. Don’t know much about his blocking and calling but hes working with a good coach in SJ apparently.

by tyrannoman on Jun 6, 2008 7:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let’s not worry about Pablito. His bat will play at the next level and he’s shown he’s athletic enough (though the body could use some work) to play either 1B or 3B. In fact, I have a great idea for keeping our slugging Catchers fresh at the major league level. Once they’re both in SF Pablito and Posey can just take turns trading off between C and 3B! That’s thinking outside the catcher’s box.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

by Roger on Jun 5, 2008 6:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I've often thought

That a good way to develop minor league catchers was 1.)sign 2 HS and 2 college every year and 2.) Have them split time – catch on day, dh the next

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

by irwin on Jun 5, 2008 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, back in April when Pablo was playing 1B and DH a little more often, his bat seemed a lot fresher. He caught nearly every game in May and there has been some tail off. I’d like to see them getting him out from behind the plate two or three times a week.

Plus Posey can pitch to Sandoval.

Posey/Sandoval

Let us not forget that Posey was a shortstop, and has played every position on the field, including pitching. Sandoval has played third and first… so both can/could be moved if necessary. It’s also true that the value of both is heightened if they can remain behind the plate. Let’s deal with the problem … when there is one.

by grizzled on Jun 5, 2008 7:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Posey won't be moved

A huge part of his value comes from the fact thathe can play tremendous defense behind the plate. he has that rare combination that allows him to be a gold glove winner and a silver slugger winner.

Sandoval already has major questions about his catching and has experience playing 3B, so I fully suspect it will be HIM that is moved

Go Durham, Roberts, Aurilia, Vizquel, Winn, Lowry! The better you do, the quicker we can trade you!

I fully expect

That a team needs two catchers, and Sandoval is shaping up like a reserve.

very true too

I’m just appealing to those who are high on Sandoval because of his strong repeat level year this season. Jackson Williams also fits the reserve bill as allfrank said, as a strictly defensive guy whose bat is dreadful.

Sandoval..

..has been hitting steadily since last June, not just on repeating.

I don’t think you need to promote him, April nothwithstanding, but to pretend this is just a fluke is to ignore his strong summer last year against older competition.

by wcw on Jun 5, 2008 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

it’s pretty hard not to be high on a guy who is mashing the way Sandoval is, even if he is repeating a level. I agree, patience is required, but it’s okay to be excited.

IIRC there's some question as to his glove as well

from our friend Rich who saw him regularly in SK last year.

Pablito

Was pretty awful at 3B. His bat doesn’t really play at 1B (unless this hot hitter is the real new Pablo) His arm as a catcher is probably his best tool and I fully expect him to gun down more runners than Posey. I think the big problem with Pablo is that with his weight it’s doubtful whether he can catch more than 90 games a season.

I just hope this means that Sabean has a trade in the works that addresses our needs at the corners like LaPorta and Hall for Pablo and someone else.

Just because he’s bad at third base is no reason not to suggest moving him back to third base!

I think a certain Giants outfielder could handle third pretty well. After all, he’s played there before. That’s right, I’m talking about Randy Winn.

There’s lots to like about this draft. It is clear the Giants have revamped their scouting/draft department. One can quibble about a pick and express a preference for another player, but it is pretty clear each pick, so far, is quite a good pick in his own right, and that we got real value and picked guys who rate higher than where they were ;picked as opposed to ‘reaching.’ I think it is exciting that Giants management was telling the truth about more money and more emphasis on the draft/scouting – and a focus on position players.
I also think it is both noteworthy and encouraging that Giants management sees Posey as a potential star – and close to the big leagues. Sabean comments in the Merc that Benji is only here thru next year – and that Posey has a shot to take that slot. In other words, they see him as a major upgrade over Sandoval. But it is up to him (Posey) – he has to sign, play and get himself ready.
It looks to me like the Giants are making distinct steps towards improving their starting 8. They seem more or less set in the OF, but not at all set with the 5 positions around the diamond. Well, today, they fill one of those slots in a big way. They take a step with 3b, too, just not a big one, not a certain one. Given their history, I would expect them to try to fill at least one of their 1b-3b vacancy thru FA. And I think they are making progress towards populating the minors with guys who could be at least MLB average at 2b, SS, and the other (the non FA) of 1b or 3b.

by allfrank on Jun 5, 2008 8:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

another thing to consider

might the Giants choose to start Posey out at Augusta because that is closer to home and might ease his transition? Maybe not, but it’s something to think about.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 5, 2008 11:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That would be my bet. Plus it’s already been mentioned that Jackson Williams will go down to S-K once short season begins.
