Open Draft Day VII
The final one for the day, I'd think. Let's all get together and wait for the inevitable Lewis & Clark pick.

And the draft anlalyzers used that exact same "unsexy" phrase to describe our first pick. I officially don’t like it. Who know how sexy they are? Right?

Maybe they just want to bring sexy back.

Believe it or not, the Giants are kicking ass and taking names.

yeah and so far they are doing their best to prove those people right.
I think that last year’s draft is going to turn out to be a good draft even in spite of those 2.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 5, 2008 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions
The Giants had a ton of picks in the top 60 last year. They spent a lot on MadBum, Alderson, Noonan and Fairley. It’s completely rationale to save some money on other picks. Last year’s draft is looking like it will be very good for the future of the club. This year’s as well. Everyone needs to lay off a little bit.

yes
Bumgarner over Heyward was merely shortsighted.
Alderson over Porcello is merely a mistake.
Fairley over Brackman or Smoker was pretty dumb.
Noonan was a legitimately good pick.
Williams was idiotic.
Culberson was stupid.
Lincecum was a great, great pick.
Burris was pretty dumb.
Tanner was a good pick.
This year, by contrast, I haven’t counted a single dumb pick yet. No Lincecum-style victories, no Tanner-style steals, but they haven’t been available.
by wcw on Jun 5, 2008 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions
Alderson over Porcello was about money. I like his ability but I wouldn’t want the Giants paying him $10 million.
Fairley hasn’t even played yet so how can we know anything about what he’ll be compared to those?
As I said before, Williams and Culberson were cost saving picks. Not every pick can be above slot.
How anyone can complain about last year’s draft is beyond me. MadBum, Alderson and Noonan are having good to great first years. Fairley is still an unknown. So at least 50% so far (and it’s really pointless to judge the class this soon anyway) out of those picks? I’d take that every time.
by AngelWillSaveUs on Jun 5, 2008 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions
Also left out are late round steals...
Talk about the 2006 draft’s pitchers:
Lincecum
Tanner
Snyder
Pucetas
Cowart
2007, talk about a 19th round STEAL in Andy D’Alessio, or nicely performing closer Dan Otero.
SFDugout.com is BACK! See the Top 50 Giants Prospects!
by BruteSentiment on Jun 5, 2008 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions
late round risk picks?
The Giants have done okay lately, yes. (Tanner’s like Schierholtz, an ‘overdraft’ of a local the team knew better than the league in an early round, not a late one.) That’s still not an excuse for some of the bonehead moves they’ve made.
If saving cash were the issue, they still should have signed Porcello, for instance. If he’s that good, he’ll be tradeable soon and will save you your outlay in foregoing some free-agent salary and not losing that next draft pick.
As for Fairley, I just don’t trust this team with a hitting project.
by wcw on Jun 5, 2008 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Brute, are you not worried about Andy D’s near 30% K% in A-ball? He basically beat up on younger competition last year, I’m thinking that the rumors that he has a hole in his swing are true. He needs to make more contact.
A power prospect in the 19th round? Even with strikeout issues, that is a hell of a value.
That said, he’s a power hitter. He knows how he will make it to the majors. That means swinging big. If he were a shortstop or center fielder whose best quality is speed (Um, Antoan?), then I’d be more concerned. But he’s slugging .500 and has a solid batting average, and is playing in a park that has been written about having issues with batters being able to pick up pitches. He doesn’t have a significant strikeout split between home and road, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect him. I’m happy with his production so far.

ive seen craw play like 10 times
and 50 times before college, a complete stud athlete, star QB/safety throughout highschool, great basketball player, and was supposed to be a top 30 pick if he didnt have an “off” year, hit 300 with a 400 obp while playing above average SS.. he pitched a couple games reaching 93-94 on his fastball
yeah, he has a rocket arm. Defensively he’s close to MLB ready right away, the question will be the hitting of course.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 5, 2008 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Crawford’s scouting report mentions “some added thickness to his lower half”.
All-Father Watch: 1.32 ERA, 5 saves, 0.95 WHIP, 26 Ks in 27 1/3 IP
We do have a lot of pitching in the minors
It’s a great idea to draft college hitters, see what they look like going into the draft next year, and then not necessarily having the problem of desperate need. They could evaluate the system and decide on pitchers or hitters

I have an admitted UCLA bias
but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Crawford pick. I’ve seen him play a ton and he is a wizard at shortstop who I (the very amateur non-scout) think is a better hitter than he gets credit for. If he would have had a better year this year he would have gone a lot higher, but he finished the year strong and had a great regional with 2 homeruns including one monster shot.
the Royals will have taken Eric Hosmer, Mike Montgomery, Tyler Sample and Tim Melville ...
even if they dont sign melville … jesus, thats an amazing draft class. I put us at a solid 2 behind them
Cain is Able ...
I saw a few innings of a UCLA – Cal game recently. I hadn’t heard of Crawford then, so I don’t really remember what he did, or even if he was starting. I do remember the shortstop making a nice sliding play on a grounder up the middle to end the inning.

Crawford's scouting report
Hitting Ability: In the past, Crawfod has shown an ability to drive the ball, but he has struggled thus far in 2008. He’s a pull hitter and has been pulling off of balls on the outer half of the plate.
Power: He’s got plus raw power to the pull side.
Running Speed: A solid average to plus runner, a slightly thicker lower half has brought him down a tick this year.
Base running: He’s a confident base-runner who can steal a base.
Arm Strength: He’s got a solid average arm and can make the throw from the hole with ease.
Fielding: His hands have always been good, though he’s not making the spectacular plays as regularly as he has in the past.
Range: He seems to have lost a step and isn’t getting to as many balls as he once did.
Physical Description: Crawford is a physically mature athlete, with a strong and muscular upper half, along with a thick waist and lower half.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: When he’s going well, he’s an all-round shortstop who can hit, hit for power, steal a base and make the plays.
Weaknesses: His confidence is shot this year and it’s reflecting in almost all facets of his game.
Summary: After his first two seasons at UCLA, Crawford seemed poised to be one of the top collegiate middle infielders in the class. But a rough Cape season appears to have carried over and he’s lost some confidence in his game, both at the plate and in the field. Some added thickness to his lower half has taken away a little of his quickness, though he’s still a solid shortstop. If he can right himself, he’s the kind of player who usually sees himself go off the board within the first couple of rounds.
Jesse English: He is BAAAAAACCCCCKKKK!
i really really really like the upside of this one. taking a guy who looked like a definite high pick, then fell off after one mediocre season seems like a good shot to take. i’m excited about the prospects of our young infield of the future: Posey, AnVil, Noonan, Crawford, and Gillaspie. plus guys like Burriss, Culberson, Frandsen, Denker, etc. it seems like we might actually be building a decent farm system here. I honestly never thought i’d see that.

Bryan Smith (4:39:42 PM PT): The Giants pop Brandon Crawford here in the fourth, and I think it’s a fabulous selection. Crawford is incredibly raw for someone his age, but he has some really nice tools. After going for sure bets in Buster Posey and Conor Gillaspie, Crawford is the perfect type of complement. Throw in Roger Kieschnick, who was once considered a first round right fielder, and it’s possible - not likely, but possible - the Giants just filled half their future.

If I’m interpreting the scouting video correctly, he has a fastball around 91, and some kind of offspeed at 80-81 mph.
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.
Adopted Giant: Henry Sosa
my computer screens not very good but
from the way people were chasing it off the plate it looked like a slider
Does anyone know anything at all about Quirarte?

BTW
Still waiting on the call as to whether I get to adopt Crazy Crab.
Anyone?

It wasn’t on the wiki – so if he remains unclaimed, the crustacean is MINE!

hopefully tidrow knows something about him
that would make me quite confident

THIS IS AN AWFUL PICK!!!!! I HATE THIS PICK!!!!!!
not really, I’m just kidding. All of these people saying the sky is falling about the Posey pick seemed kind of fun.
I liked Smoak
but people were REALLY mad. It was funny when we got a guy who very well could have gone #!
by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 5, 2008 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah, that was my thought
you can certainly prefer Smoak or somebody else, but there’s no way in the world that was a BAD pick.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 5, 2008 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions
For Northridge, he was 4-4 with a 2.09 ERA working as a reliever. 20 BB and 38 SO in 56 IP.

Hit 91 in his scouting video
I also love the background music on many of the scout videos.
Let's bring the...
Quirarte reminds me of Hennessey
And I base that on nothing whatsoever
I was THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME (for 3 days in 1995).
by Mike Benjamin Hit King on Jun 5, 2008 5:10 PM PDT reply actions
Hennessey had a lot of potential when drafted
..not the best pick, but at the time his slider was considered something else. The two years lost to back tumors likely stunted his development.
by wcw on Jun 5, 2008 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah, and even in spite of the setbacks
he has still had a couple of relatively productive MLB seasons which makes him a halfway decent pick even in the first round.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 5, 2008 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions
And he is probably not done.

Since my name is Eric and I have no other MCC children I am taking this opportunity to draft Eric Surkamp. Now I can celebrate Fathers Day next weekend!
I'm an ESPN Insider!
for what it’s worth he’s struck out 82 in 69.2 innings pitched this year, so he does seem to have the stuff to make guys miss

also, sounds like he had a lot lot of success in the cape cod league
from his bio on NC State’s athletic site:
“Split the summer of 2007 between Team USA and the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League … Went 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA in five appearances, including four starts, at Orleans, pitching 24 1/3 innings and allowing 20 hits, walking eight and striking out 26 …”

Interesting story on Surkamp
Apparently, he’s a longtime friend (and teammate) of Andrew Brackman.
http://www.newsobserver.com/122/story/574574.html
What I’ve got on his stuff: FB 88-90, Strong Changeup (at least in 2007), 70-71 MPH ‘Hook’. A BP article compared him to Glavine in 2007, suggesting he should be drafted ‘higher’ than Tom, who was a 54th overall pick.

I still wish they'd taken Smoak, but...
...this looks like a really strong draft to my relatively untrained eye. 3-4 guys who could well show up on our top 10 prospects list next year (especially if Schierholtz ends up with too many at-bats to be counted).
That's the way to draft...
getting talent rated higher than the spot they are picked in… seems like something that didn’t happen much in past years.
by baseballjunkie on Jun 5, 2008 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions
i think they only do 6 rounds day 1 and the rest tomorrow
go giants!
by krukkuipandclint on Jun 5, 2008 6:04 PM PDT reply actions
All in all, a good day for the Giants, I think.
I can understand why a lot of people wanted Smoak, but every draft expert out there preferred Posey. Gillaspie and Kieschnick are good value picks (rated higher by Baseball America and ESPN than where they actually went).
Crawford probably won’t amount to anything, but I think he’s a good risk in the fourth round. Let’s not forget that less than a year ago he was a Top 30 prospect.
I’m happy.
