Posey and Gillaspie.

So the Giants drafted two well respected college hitters this year with their two first picks. The question is, where will they start off the season? I mean they are advanced hitters right, so will Sabes start them off in San Jose or do they go safe and put them in low a ball? What do you guys predict? And what are your opinions?

I for one hope the Giants start these advanced college hitters off in San Jose.

my prediction

I’m thinking at least Posey goes immediately to San Jose rather than playing for the Rookie league team in Arizona this summer, which would mean they would put Pablo Sandoval in AAA (they have pretty much sworn that he will never set foot in Dodd Stadium). Gillaspie could probably go immediately to San Jose too, but he may play for the Rookie league team and then start in San Jose on opening day next year. I doubt either of them ever see Low-A

I’m very happy about these picks, though since they are both signing questions I’m not sure we’ll see them debut for some time. That said, I’d be very surprised (and furious) if we don’t sign them both eventually.

keep in mind that the new MLB deadline for signing picks is in August, so this really can’t drag out too terribly long.

See, something felt wrong as I’d typed that, I forgot about that particular change.

My only concern is power

I really, really would have like to see a slugger as one of the first two picks. We just don’t have too many of them in the minors (I am a believer in Pablo, and in Andy D’allessio, and a few others, but each has question marks), and I don’t really trust this team to get them through free agency without giving up our one mega-strength, young pitching.

That said, Posey and Gillaspie seem to be regarded by the experts as good picks, and I’m certainly very happy that we drafted at positions where we’ll need help in a few years.

Look at the bright side.

We are on track to get a top 7 pick again next June. Maybe Sabean will get us a thhumper then.

You obviously mean a rabbit. Another slap-and-run SS?

I once had Fresh Local Rabbit at a restaurant, and the idea amused me to no end. The rabbit itself was a little dry, but even then I could see how that meat would go from “pretty darn good” to “fantastic” if it were cooked just a little better.

I needs to try me some rabbit again one day. That and every other legal meat bearing animal.

If you’re ever on the Sonoma coast, there is a resturant called Pangea in Gualala, and they used to have a rabbit dish on the menu that was out of this world. Loves eatin’ me some Bugs.

Ah yes wa-La-la. The source of endless amusement as city folk try and force an Anglo Saxon “g” into it. Hey I amuse easily and few things amuse me as others looking as dumb as I usually do.

Little known fact a person can starve to death just eating rabbits. Are you listen Sabean?

so true. referred to as rabbit starvation. I’ll just get out of the way and let wikipedia take over:

Rabbit starvation is the form of acute malnutrition caused by excess consumption of any lean meat (specifically rabbit) coupled with a lack of other sources of nutrients. Symptoms include diarrhea, headache, lassitude, a vague discomfort and hunger that can only be satisfied by consumption of fat or carbohydrates.

Yes. Obliviously Sabean did not read the Giants G.M. owner’s manual and the SS his is definition.

Yes...

...but I think that Posey will be put into a higher league, though I think he’ll start in Augusta. The rest? S-K for sure.

My Prediction...

Posey will not sign until the deadline, which will leave him maybe three to four games in SJ or SK.

I'm pretty sure

the Giants’ have a “genteman’s agreement” with Posey already. That would explain the outrageous bonus floated before the draft, to make sure Tampa didn’t take him with the first pick.

by tyrannoman on Jun 6, 2008 7:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Let them begin in S-K

If they prove their worth then move them up accordingly.

by wilriv21 on Jun 5, 2008 4:32 PM PDT reply actions

there was a Sabean quote in John Shea’s story that made it sounds like he expects Posey in SF after 2009 when Molina’s time is up.
