Open Draft Day VI

I wonder if Conor Gillaspie's cheeks puff out when he swings.

I'm loving the draft so far. Loving it.

Hey guys...

Rangers fan and FSU student/fan… just thought I’d come over and talk about Posey…
You don’t really need me to tell you how awesome he is. The dude has power. He hit 4 HRs in two games on Sunday. I feel like he got one in the game against Tulane on Monday too. In terms of a catcher, I can’t really speak to how he manages a pitcher, but he has got a freakin’ rocket for an arm. He can throw a guy out with the best of them. Threw out some douche from UF by a mile this last weekend.
He definitely gets respect from college pitchers, but when you have the lineup that FSU does (and if you believe in the theory of protection), the guy can take advantage of opportunities. Really good judgment. He doesn’t really strikeout swinging, and he really doesn’t K much at all.
You know the stories, playing all 9 positions in a 7 inning mercy rule game. He can close a game out, etc etc.

The thing I find most interesting, is that both of your top two picks will be here in Tallahassee this weekend in the Super Regional round of the CWS. I’m sure some of your front office / scouting people will be down here in Tally, how often do you get to make one trip, and see your top two picks?

Well I'll be the contrarian...

But I don’t see what’s so special about Gillaspie. No power, below-average speed, average arm, limited range, Bill Mueller-type… I mean, I liked Bill Mueller as much as the next guy, but it seems to me that guys like Bill Mueller are a dime a dozen in the amateur draft. Why spend a sandwich pick on someone without any power, speed, arm or range?

Look, I’ll admit that I have absolutely zero faith in Sabean to select good position players, and even less faith in the Giants farm system to develop them. So I’m definitely coming in with a jaundiced eye here. But really, this just looks like another typical Sabean position player pick to me—gritty, scrappy, blue-collar guy, who hits for average and plays the game the right way. A real baseball player! Guys like this have been coming and going in the Giants system for the past 20 years. They hit .300 at every level with an OBP of about .315 and a SLG right around .400. And they never amount to a hill of beans if they ever even make it up to the big club.

Does he at least have some plate discipline? Because if he doesn’t, I’m not even seeing Bill Mueller; I’m seeing Tony Torcato.

Help me understand why I should be excited about this pick. Because I really would like to be!

the draft is always a crapshoot, especially past the first dozen picks or two

by wcw on Jun 5, 2008 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Torcato’s problem was the shoulder surgeries that sapped his power. He wasn’t a big slugger to begin with, and that put him down in Mueller-range but without Mueller’s defensive prowess. He was Dave Magadan at the very most.

I don’t mean that every draft is teeming with future MLB replacement-level 3Bmen all up and down. I mean that when Bill Mueller was taken in the 15th round of the ‘93 draft (pick #414), there was nothing that remarkable about him, and that in every draft there are hundreds of somewhat non-descript players like that who don’t have much in the way of a major league caliber ceiling. The fact that Mueller happened to develop into a credible major leaguer was probably nothing more than luck of the draw.

I’m just not seeing what makes Gillaspie special enough that the Giants would select him with the 37th overall pick. I would think someone selected that high would have a higher ceiling than Gillaspie seems to have. He seems like just another guy to me.

That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!

Mueller becoming Mueller was a long shot. Gillaspie has a better chance of making it at the Mueller level.

How long has it been since the Giants have had a 3B put up those numbers over a five year period ? If Gillaspie turns out to Bill Mueller, I’d be pretty damn happy with the pick.

Gillaspie had a .506 obp last year

a .421 average and he led the Cape Cod league (where they use wooden bats) in avg and slugging last year.

He can hit, and he might show more power then people think. Remember these guys are 20-21… no one expects them to reach their peak power potential until 25-28.

And Torcato is a bad comparison because he was a high schooler, hard to project power for highschoolers.

I disagree...

The Giants are second in the league in doubles, second in the league in triples. And yet they are 14th in the league in runs scored and 11th in SLG.

Because they don’t have the other bats in the line up to drive in Lewis, Burris, and Rowand.

Besides, How many of those “doubles” are BMoney’s ? You have to hit a HR to drive in Bengie from second :-)

My adopted son Matt Downs. Bill Mueller without the two-flap helmet .

by nvsfg on Jun 5, 2008 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Burris?

He gets on base?

Every team is going to have good hitters and not-so-good hitters, fast baserunners and Bengie. But a team whose “power hitters” provide doubles instead of HRs isn’t going to score as many runs as one that features home run hitters. Because home runs score more runs than doubles (especially if Bengie is on base). That’s the main reason why the Giants are 14th in HRs and 14th in runs scored, and why their doubles and triples hitting prowess doesn’t translate into a lot of runs scored.

That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!

I like the plate discipline, if he brings it with him to the pros

And I said that without plate discipline (and without power) he could be another Tony Torcato. The scouting report said he doesn’t project for power. I hope you’re right and they are wrong. I do like what I see of his Cape Cod league performance. I’m going to hold on to that and hope that bodes well for him.

Players like this (experienced college talent) is what you put with the younger prospects from last year. These players may have a label stuck to them already, but their talent could very well exceed that. These are the types of players that advance the farm system to where you could have starters by the mid-to-end part of the 2009 season and real building blocks on-which to set the rest of the foundation. If you think these guys are Tony Torcato, I don’t agree with that in any way. Posey and Gillaspie have both proven they can handle wood bats and some of the best pitching the NCAA can throw at them. This looks as though this team has maybe put some serious coin into scouting and development where it once didn’t and sometimes refused to.

Kieschnick is a potential five-tool corner outfielder who could hit for power and steal a few bases. He plays a fearless outfield, getting to plenty of balls and showing off a good arm at times. The one knock is an issue with his mechanics at the plate that concerns some about his hitting ability at the next level. Still, an aggressive college outfielder - in a weak class of outfielders - who has those tools should get plenty of interest.

Kieschnick

Not a bad pick. A back-of-the-rotation knuckleballer, current scouting report be damned.

by biff pocoroba on Jun 5, 2008 4:04 PM PDT reply actions

We picked a guy with power

I like the pick. The Giants have had a nice, conservative draft thus far and I like this pick.

Go Durham, Roberts, Aurilia, Vizquel, Winn, Lowry! The better you do, the quicker we can trade you!

KLaw Report ...

Summary: Kieschnick has first-round ability, but his approach and his results will push him down to the second round. He can run, has a good arm, and plays right field very well. He has some raw power and the strength to hit for more if he learns to keep his weight back better and get his lower half involved when he makes solid contact. Contact, however, is a problem, as his swing isn’t consistent and he’s on his front foot early. He’s an upside play for a team willing to take a shot at handing him to player development to clean him up, but there’s a good chance he turns into a fourth outfielder because he doesn’t hit enough to profile in a corner despite all his other skills.

that sounds to me like a pretty good pick at #82. A project with raw power. There aren’t a lot of sure things at #82.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 5, 2008 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

true but ...

when you have a talent like Galloway there, I dont think you can use that as an excuse. Galloway is also a project but offers signifcantly higher upside.

The power potential … its a 55, just above average. Hardly raw power

Meh.

The Giants won’t emphasize plate discipline and won’t develop him. Perhaps another team will end up getting value

proven we are an organization that can bring in guys and develop them.

Which is 109 + 8. * snickers *

25-34.... But who really cares when you turn a triple play? Right?

Ok

I give up. What’s 109?

by cheno on Jun 5, 2008 4:07 PM PDT reply actions

After Zito’s start in Florida, someone asked what his pitch count was. Seconds later, a flood of 109s appeared. Thus another running gag is born.

Nicknamed Petey.

I know I'm late, but:

Kieschnick sounds pretty good to me. From the looks of it, he’s a high risk/high reward sort of guy – which seems like a good way to go in the third round after picking two fairly polished but relatively unsexy guys with their first two picks.

Kyle Russell

Another outfielder with power drafted by the Dodgers this year. He had a down year, which must have lowered his stock. I wonder what it would have taken to get him with our pick there.

I'm a Packers fan

And the draft anlalyzers used that exact same “unsexy” phrase to describe our first pick. I officially don’t like it. Who know how sexy they are? Right?

Kevin Goldstein (4:20:18 PM PT): ted (the cubicle): How about Roger Kieschnick—did the Giants go 3 for 3? I saw Baseball America had him at #44.

Believe it or not, the Giants are kicking ass and taking names.

Kevin Goldstein (4:24:28 PM PT): bravoatoc (Tulsa): So, I know we aren’t near being done, but what are your initial views on who had the best draft and who had the worst? Actually who is having the best draft, the Astros ARE having the worst.

I haven’t had time to digest it all, but as weird as this sounds. I really like the Giants draft.

What if we hadn’t of signed Rowand and Vizquel, kept our 2nd Round pick and gotten another Comp Pick for Omar? I’d like that. And I’d still like Smoak. I’m stuck in a past that doesn’t exist.
