my boss just sent me a pissant email

..and I hated my job before that, so: if you ever catch me doing productive work again that I do not absolutely have to do to avoid getting fired for cause (layoff == unemployment; that’s fine), shoot me.

I agree, fuck work. But thanks to Brute for giving me a job that’s pretty kickass. I had to take days off from my day job to do this, but we can go back to the old creed: FUCK WORK!

From BA:

The Indians went off the board with the 29th pick, taking junior college third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall. Chisenhall has plenty of upside–he ranked as the No. 1 freshman in the nation heading into 2007–but was kicked off South Carolina’s team for stealing money from the coaches’ locker. He landed at Pitt (N.C.) JC and had a fine spring, but makeup questions were expected to keep him out of the first round. Not so.

by wilriv21 on Jun 5, 2008 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, now I wouldn't like him anymore...

It’s one thing if you took something from some freshman as a prank….or get drunk and do something dumb.

But to steal from your damned coach? When you can (and want to) be a pro ballplayer? Ridiculous judgement issues there.

It’s all such applied guesswork. I mean, you’d have to say, for instance, that Tim Lincecum hasn’t reached his ceiling yet, because he’s still so new to the majors, but he’s in the top running so far for NL Cy Young, so what’s his ceiling: God?

And then there are players like Matt Holliday, who didn’t really become anything until they’d been in the minors for awhile (correct me if I’m wrong here)- what was his ceiling listed as?

just saw Smoak really dropped a bit. Maybe others know something. Could he have been an overdraft at #5? Oh well, he’ll probably pop 50 bombs a year for the Rangers.

But on the bright side, the Giants get a player who at one time was rumored to be a possible #1 pick. The last time that happened we got Lincecum.

My favorite player still on the board, the question is simply whether or not the Giants could actually develop him. If I’m the phillies i’m snatching this guy up at pick 33 and reaping the benefits in 5 years when he comes a stud.

The Giants could be fine if a college hitter like Gillespie is still around, but other than him, taking a pitcher seems to make the most sense. Collier is really enticing though

Inquiry for those better informed than I

So, I know Pablo Sandoval is a big favorite around here. Where does this draft leave him? He can play catcher or first base – the positions held by arguably the team’s top 2 position player prospects (and we just drafted a third baseman, the other position Villalona plays). Does he move elsewhere? Does this mean the Giants don’t think highly of him?

by jcb9 on Jun 5, 2008 2:23 PM PDT reply actions

Kevin Goldstein (2:23:40 PM PT): 37. SF, Conor Gillaspie, 3b, Wichita St.

A lot of people saw this as a first-round bat, but at the same time, there might be money problems. Giants looks to be ready to do the right thing in the draft.

Bryan Smith (2:24:29 PM PT): San Francisco takes another player in Gillaspie in the sandwich round that’s going to hit for a good average and just a little power. I like Gillaspie quite a bit, though, and I think he’s really going to hit. The Giants really have improved their future today with Gillaspie and Posey.

by AngelWillSaveUs on Jun 5, 2008 2:23 PM PDT reply actions

Misdiagnosing the problem with the Giants??

Conor Gillaspie – “He doesn’t have much and doesn’t profile to have much. He’s a base-hit machine.”

Yeah! he gets hits. boo, they’re singles.

Bonds stands alone.

From BA
• Conor Gillaspie, a possible first-round pick for many, went to the Giants at 37 overall and might be a great fit for the organization.

by wilriv21 on Jun 5, 2008 2:24 PM PDT reply actions

From Draft Tracker...
“His lack of power makes it hard to profile him anywhere other than as a Bill Mueller type third baseman. There are worse things to be, of course, and a team that values what Gillaspie can do will surely take him”

I guess I’m going to have to change my sig line :-)

My adopted son Matt Downs. Bill Mueller without the two-flap helmet .

so we got an almost certain above average MLB Catcher and a corner infielder who can rake and was the MVP of the Cape Cod League.

If I didn’t know better I would say that has the makings of an excellent draft

I'd say the past 2 drafts have been excellent as well

I don’t care who else they got in ‘06, they got Timmy and that makes it excellent.
Last year looks to be pretty swell with Noonan, Bumgarner, and Timmy 2.0 all doing well.

Proud pappa of....STEVE HOLM!!

I agree

a couple of very good drafts in a row. I really think last year’s draft could turn out to be excellent and very deep.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 5, 2008 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Also got Burriss in 06

And Bocock, so between the two of them it saved us from signing the shriveled husk of Jose Vizcaino or equivalent. That’s definitely a plus.

correct if wrong, but

with this pick I’m pretty sure we now have a serious, top-level prospect at every position:

C Posey
1B Villalona
2B Noonan
SS Burriss
3B Gillaspie
LF Frederick Lewis Wellington IV
CF Wendell Fairley
RF Schierholtz (he counts if Burriss does, right?)

It'll be a while until the next pick...

I hope and think the Giants will go for another bat. I’m thinking they go outfielder next. It would be nice to get someone with some upside even if it could be a project. Xavier Avery, if his possible football plans scare teams away, would be nice. Hmmm…football player mentality… GAMER… would fit in with the pattern so far. Or Eric Thames if his injury causes him to drop… less upside than Avery but further along in development. Sickels had him going at the end of Rd 1 before his injury.

by baseballjunkie on Jun 5, 2008 2:56 PM PDT reply actions

As long as it's not serious...

If he’s there, the Giants should take Tanner Scheppers. The stress fractures are a concern but if FSU beats Arizona state this weekend, it’s possible he could be available to pitch in the CWS…at least according to the Fresno Bee. As the old addage goes, you can never have too much pitching and he was top 10/12 before the injury.
