Open Draft Day IV

Can you imagine if the rumors heard by Kevin Goldstein came to pass?

There have been almost-daily rumors about (the Giants) taking a player who is nowhere close to the fifth pick overall in terms of value, including Arizona State’s Ike Davis and Vanderbilt’s Ryan Flaherty

Man. That would have been a legendary thread. This Posey dissent is nothin'.

Ultimate Role: Everyday player/middle of the order

Summary: (Watch scouting video) Gillaspie is a classic plays-like-his-hair’s-on-fire gamer type who has plenty of hitting ability to make him a legitimate late first-round prospect. Gillaspie has a very quick bat, almost a little too quick in and out of the zone, and great hand-eye coordination. He keeps his weight back well and drives through the ball, although his swing is more geared to contact than big power. There is some concern over whether Gillaspie can stay at third long-term, but he has a solid-average arm and is athletic enough to improve at the position with time and instruction, or would be a potential candidate to move to the keystone and become an offensive second baseman.

Uh-oh...
“He’s going to be a run producer with the bat,” Sabean said of Posey, “so it’s kind of like getting two players in one. It’s very, very difficult to get an all-around catcher, especially a run producer.”

Last time Sabes used the “It’s like getting X players” argument, it was to justify Neifi’s signing (“He plays 2nd and short and he’s a switch-hitter, so it’s kind of like getting four players”).

I did like this, though:

“He’s far more advanced than he gets credit for by people who have no business evaluating him,” Sabean said.
