It's not just his command

though that’s a big part of it. He’s getting hit more, he’s walking more guys and he’s giving up WAY more HR than he has the last 2 years. It’s because he’s not improving like one would expect, and he’s not even holding steady.

Posey's Profile from BP
3. Buster Posey, C, Florida State
What He Is: An incredibly athletic catcher with a patient approach, decent power, and top-notch defensive potential.
What He’s Not: A true impact player.
In A Perfect World He Becomes: A Gold Glove catcher who hits .270-.290 with 15-20 home runs and 75 walks.
Backup Plan: He’s one of the safest picks around, so you don’t really need one, but he’s a pretty good infielder as well.
Open Issues: He’s still new to catching, so while he has the potential to be great, he’s not there yet. His ultimate power ceiling ranges from just average to well-above, depending on who you talk to.

by xanthan on Jun 5, 2008 11:50 AM PDT reply actions

I wouldn’t have minded Justin Smoak but this is the first time I can remember where the Giants have taken the player left on the board who I wanted most.

by GiantsFanInExile on Jun 5, 2008 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Two reasons

1 – he’s not a catcher that does nor project to be average

and

2 – because he looks to be an above-average SS

Those are the two throwaway offense positions, but if you can get some good production, it is bonus. And one looks like a bigger threat than the other.

Rotoworld take

Giants selected Florida State catcher Buster Posey with the fifth pick in the draft.
A bit of a surprise. The Giants will have to spend big to sign Posey, but it should be worth it. He’s turned into a legitimate catcher prospect, and he has great on-base skills and modest power potential. His skill set resembles Joe Mauer’s, even if he is a right-handed hitter, but since he does lack polish behind the plate, he might not advance quite as quickly as Alvarez or a couple of the other top college players.

From ESPN on Smoak...
This is the best pick in the draft so far. Smoak is the third-best player on my board. He’s a switch-hitting Adrian Gonzalez with more power. In the Rangers’ ballpark, he has a good chance to hit 40 home runs, if he develops. There are no major holes in his game. I saw this scenario possibly unfolding last night. A lot of things had to go right for them to get Smoak, and they did.

Well that explains why he wasn’t picked sooner. They’re comparing him to some chick name Adrian
