Open Draft Day III
If everyone here liked the pick, I'd be terrified.
Welcome, Buster Posey.

This doesn’t worry me nearly as much as Matt Cain’s control issues.
No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball
I don’t get why everybody’s going bat nutty that a 23 year old is struggling with his command.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

It's not just his command
though that’s a big part of it. He’s getting hit more, he’s walking more guys and he’s giving up WAY more HR than he has the last 2 years. It’s because he’s not improving like one would expect, and he’s not even holding steady.
Alonso to Reds
wow, over Smoak. surprising.

Posey's Profile from BP
3. Buster Posey, C, Florida State
What He Is: An incredibly athletic catcher with a patient approach, decent power, and top-notch defensive potential.
What He’s Not: A true impact player.
In A Perfect World He Becomes: A Gold Glove catcher who hits .270-.290 with 15-20 home runs and 75 walks.
Backup Plan: He’s one of the safest picks around, so you don’t really need one, but he’s a pretty good infielder as well.
Open Issues: He’s still new to catching, so while he has the potential to be great, he’s not there yet. His ultimate power ceiling ranges from just average to well-above, depending on who you talk to.
you should change your handle to

go look. go ahead. that OBP is awesome. slugging is above average. and all this as a CATCHER
So does this mean I’ve officially adopted Posey? Can I get a ruling? (And if so, WHOOOO!)

Bengie: Like an Aurilia kidney stone, slow-moving and tough to get out.
My adopted son Matt Downs. Bill Mueller without the two-flap helmet .
I, for one, am psyched. Law had him as the second best overall player in the draft after Tim Beckham, he fits a positional need going forward, he is expected to move relatively quickly, and, umm, I guess his RBI total doesn’t bother me. snort
I wouldn’t have minded Justin Smoak but this is the first time I can remember where the Giants have taken the player left on the board who I wanted most.
Barry Zito: Mike Hampton with a guitar
I like the pick. Wanted Smoak too but this draft seems to be deep with college bats that project to first base. Pick up one of those at 37 and I think the Giants are in a way better position then when the day started.

nothing
Pray the team has to pick between the two with Sandoval tearing up the PCL in three years.
Sabes pretty much said a while back that Pablo, unless he totally falls off, will end this season in the PCL
triple A?
Seems a year ahead of schedule. I’d rather jump him to the PCL next spring.
Well, right now he’s producing too much to stay in SJ, and Sabean pretty much came out and said he’s not going to kill his bat and confidence in Dodd
he just had a hot April
monthly wOBA for the last year:
373
356
288
557
363
336
The 557 is April 2008. The remaining months are good, but not stellar. He stays in the Cal League until he starts producing more every month.
Here is a nice puff piece on Posey from ESPN that was written this April.Posey, the consummate student-athlete, key to Florida State’s success.
He can move around and most likely will. He’s only been playing Catcher for one year.
My adopted son Matt Downs. Bill Mueller without the two-flap helmet .
nothing. he’s probably gonna end up in AAA by the end of next year so he’s far ahead. posey will probably be at low A at the end of next year and high A at the best

by GiantsFanInExile on Jun 5, 2008 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions
Two reasons
1 – he’s not a catcher that does nor project to be average
and
2 – because he looks to be an above-average SS
Those are the two throwaway offense positions, but if you can get some good production, it is bonus. And one looks like a bigger threat than the other.

Someone will be happy he's dropped this far.
I was really surprised that Cincy took Alonso (and his $7M bonus demands) over Smoak.
Kevin Goldstein (11:40:10 AM PT): Lemme say I think Bryan is WAY low on Posey. Best case scenario is .290/.360/.475 catcher with Gold Glove defense. WAY better than Kendall.
Barry Zito: Mike Hampton with a guitar
Smoak will not last 3 more picks
Let alone close to 30

Rotoworld take
Giants selected Florida State catcher Buster Posey with the fifth pick in the draft.
A bit of a surprise. The Giants will have to spend big to sign Posey, but it should be worth it. He’s turned into a legitimate catcher prospect, and he has great on-base skills and modest power potential. His skill set resembles Joe Mauer’s, even if he is a right-handed hitter, but since he does lack polish behind the plate, he might not advance quite as quickly as Alvarez or a couple of the other top college players.
Kevin Goldstein (12:10:37 PM PT): 10. Astros—Jason Castro, C, Stanford.
Are you f-ing kidding me? Words can not describe how dumb this is. They just can’t. I’m utterly speechless. At least I get to rip Houston’s drafts once again. I’m rambling to myslef here it total disbelief.

From ESPN on Smoak...
This is the best pick in the draft so far. Smoak is the third-best player on my board. He’s a switch-hitting Adrian Gonzalez with more power. In the Rangers’ ballpark, he has a good chance to hit 40 home runs, if he develops. There are no major holes in his game. I saw this scenario possibly unfolding last night. A lot of things had to go right for them to get Smoak, and they did.
Well that explains why he wasn’t picked sooner. They’re comparing him to some chick name Adrian
