That's just wrong.

The Milk House just does not sound like a place for sports.

What it does sound like, I won’t say, since I’m posting from work.

Maybe your meeting is with Brian Sabean, and he’ll want to know which player the Giants should draft.

BA blog

We feel good about our first four picks on the last Mock Draft: Beckham, then Pedro Alvarez to the Pirates, Eric Hosmer to the Royals and Brian Matusz to the Orioles.

The problem with the mock draft is the Giants. They could go Justin Smoak, but BA’s Matt Blood reports from Orlando that he’s getting Buster Posey vibes at five. That would shake up our projected second half of the top 10 to look like this:

Catcher position

Do the Giants see Pablo Sandoval as a Major Leaguer at some position other than Catcher? Or are they simply thinking that depth at C is hugely important?

Pablo

From the BP Roundtable Chat

Bryan Smith (11:37:58 AM PT): Before the Giants pick, let me say that I think Justin Smoak is a better fit for this organization than Posey. Steven alluded to it a bit earlier—they need absolute impact bats. I like Buster Posey a ton, and I think he’s a sure-fire Major Leaguer. But absolute best case scenario is probably late 90s Jason Kendall, and we’ve all seen the other comparisons thrown around. Smoak has the potential to lead the Major Leagues in home runs and win Gold Gloves. Position scarcity shouldn’t concern a Giants team that is weak at every position offensively.

Plenty

I’m sure if you went back to the 2006 draft and picked out all the people who weren’t sure about Lincecum, they’d gladly admit they were wrong. Or going back to last year, even the current consensus about Bumgarner seems to be “I wish they’d taken a hitter, but for what it was that was a solid pick.”

Bryan Smith (11:44:34 AM PT): Kevin’s right in one area: Posey is far better than Kendall defensively, so the comparison is far from perfect. But let’s not forget how good Kendall was offensively: .310/.410/.480 for the years I’m talking about as his ceiling. It’s a good pick, and Posey has improved every year of college. And hell, I love him because he’s the first Cape guy to go.

The next pick a catcher

What does it tell you when the next pick is another highly touted catcher. I think that giants won’t go wrong with Posey. If he is anywhere close to Varitek then he is a solid pick.

by mlo on Jun 5, 2008 11:45 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Mike Matheny is a better comp, but without the arm.

by Change Up on Jun 5, 2008 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

..the real fear is that his college numbers are illusory (weak competeition, bandbox home park, aluminum bats), so the downside is out of baseball.

by positiveuphemism on Jun 5, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

KLaw seems to think highly of him...

Summary: Posey, like Jorge Posada, is a converted infielder who has found a home behind the plate. Unlike Posada, however, Posey is going to be a plus defender as a backstop, and combined with his offensive skill set, he’s one of the top talents in the draft pool. Posey has a quick, compact stroke with good bad control, covering the zone well and showing good recognition of balls and strikes. He doesn’t project to hit for more than average power with wood; he leaks slightly at the plate, and while he has some loft in his swing, he gets under balls when swinging a wood bat. Behind the dish, he has great energy, a plus arm, and soft hands. He’s the safest player in this draft, because he has the defensive skill set to play in the majors and enough bat to at least be a backup even if he never improves an iota, but his upside is as a No. 2 or No. 3 hitter who hits for average, gets on base, hits a ton of doubles with 15-20 homers, all while providing plus defense.

by tyrannoman on Jun 5, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

From ESPN
Posey is the best catcher in the draft, and he is likely to move quickly. There is very little downside to Posey. Defensively, he can play in the big leagues right now. Catching is a glaring need for the Giants in their farm system. And Posey is one of the best makeup guys in the draft.

That’s true about catching being a glaring hole.

Wow!

There is some serious crying going on in here that would rival pre-schoolers during a thunder storm after the lights go out. Give Posey a chance before what negative comments some of you read and what you haven’t seen for yourself, then take it as scripture. Posey wasn’t in the running for the #1 overall spot because he is a fraud without any talent. I certainly didn’t think we’d have the chance to draft him because I thought someone else would grab him ahead of us. Just because for some of you this isn’t the potential impact player of your dreams that you wanted, don’t show this guy the door less than 45 minutes into his career.

it's always noonan somewhere

Agree

I agree. A week ago many sites where predicting Posey going to the Rays at #1. So far three catchers have been picked with the top 10 picks. If the Giants believe the Villalona is the first baseman of the future then now pick the third baseman of the future or an outfielder with power. Forget focusing on speed and draft for power.
