Open Draft Day Thread I
Teams drafting a player named Tim in the first round for three consecutive years have never not won a championship the following year. Yet another reason why we need to package our trade exception and Ray Durham's expiring contract to move up in this draft.

Smoak or Hosmer please.
If we draft Matusz or Crow, I think this board will be highly displeased. A lot of rumors flying around that the Giants may make a huge reach at #5 and pick a player at the end of 1st round at #5.

I’m with you – Smoak or Hosmer, and try not to be too displeased if it’s Posey. Might cry if they take Gordon Beckham.

From what I know (and that's not much)
I’d be ecstatic with Smoak, Hosmer, or if by some miracle they’re available, Tim Beckham or Pedro Alvarez.
I’d be happy with Alonso. I’d be okay with Posey. Even Skipworth and G. Beckham I could live with.
I am simply NOT OKAY with a pitcher this time. The stakes are just too frigging high, and for the love of gawd, WE’VE GOT GOOD YOUNG PITCHERS ALREADY!

Smoak on the Water
PLEASE Don’t let the Orioles draft this guy. It’d be so nice to get a power-hitting 1B.
I predict that if a pitcher is taken by the Giants at 5, this board will go into full on meltdown mode.

Me want Smoak, too
here’s more from the craptacular Dayn Perry (whom I dislike with a passion)
4. Justin Smoak, 1B, South Carolina
The switch-hitting Smoak is probably the best pure hitter in the draft not named Pedro Alvarez. Controls the strike zone, takes his walks, ridiculous power. And he’s done it all against SEC competition. His defense at first is acceptable, but it’s his bat that makes him a potential star. He’s the surest bet available.

I recently updated my comparison between Castle and Happy Pete on my blarg. He might not be hitting into those double plays as frequently, but he sure strikes out a hell of lot – I think the rate has increased over the last few weeks.

He strikes out a lot because he swings out of the zone a lot and makes contact at a little under league average when he’s outside of the strike zone.

Nice write-up. I suspect that many of his stats have deteriorated since then – I did a surface analysis around May 12, which I revisited over the weekend, and while some stats are similar, many are worse. I don’t think any are better.

What would you expect from a guy that got put on waivers? I think people don’t mind Castillo because he’s the lesser of a great number of evils.
The last time the Giants had a good option at 3B was when Aramis went on free agency, but even then people were lukewarm to the idea.
