Open Draft Day Thread I
Teams drafting a player named Tim in the first round for three consecutive years have never not won a championship the following year. Yet another reason why we need to package our trade exception and Ray Durham's expiring contract to move up in this draft.

Smoak or Hosmer please.
If we draft Matusz or Crow, I think this board will be highly displeased. A lot of rumors flying around that the Giants may make a huge reach at #5 and pick a player at the end of 1st round at #5.
Jesse English: He is BAAAAAACCCCCKKKK!
I’m with you – Smoak or Hosmer, and try not to be too displeased if it’s Posey. Might cry if they take Gordon Beckham.

From what I know (and that's not much)
I’d be ecstatic with Smoak, Hosmer, or if by some miracle they’re available, Tim Beckham or Pedro Alvarez.
I’d be happy with Alonso. I’d be okay with Posey. Even Skipworth and G. Beckham I could live with.
I am simply NOT OKAY with a pitcher this time. The stakes are just too frigging high, and for the love of gawd, WE’VE GOT GOOD YOUNG PITCHERS ALREADY!
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
According to Keith Law’s latest we’re all lined up for Buster Posey.

PLEASE Don’t let the Orioles draft this guy. It’d be so nice to get a power-hitting 1B.

Me want Smoak, too
here’s more from the craptacular Dayn Perry (whom I dislike with a passion)
4. Justin Smoak, 1B, South Carolina
The switch-hitting Smoak is probably the best pure hitter in the draft not named Pedro Alvarez. Controls the strike zone, takes his walks, ridiculous power. And he’s done it all against SEC competition. His defense at first is acceptable, but it’s his bat that makes him a potential star. He’s the surest bet available.
Dayn Perry gets on his knees when Lasorda asks him to.

Players the Giants could draft who would not cause me great emotional distress:
T. Beckham
G. Beckham
Alvarez
Smoak
Hosmer
Alonso
Wallace
Posey
hell, probably even Skipworth, Matusz, and Crow
What’s been that common theme of Grant’s post for the week? “It would be pretty hard for the Giants to eff this up.” Which is exactly why I’m worried. Because these are the Giants we’re talking about here.
God, I hope it’s Smoak. That would just make everyone so happy, and I’m 99.9% sure we wouldn’t really regret it. While there could be better players picked after him, I think it would take a lot of bad luck for the South Carolinan not to pan out.

The Main reason that I (and I think everyone else) want smoak
Is that he has the highest probability of playing 1b for the ML team. He may not have the highest ceiling of players avaliable, but his combination of ceiling and probability is the best.

exactly
the floor is so solid with Smoak, it’s hard to imagine us really regretting that pick. Forgive my poor metaphor, but depending on who’s picked after him, drafting Smoak may not be viewed as a home run in a few years. But it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which it’s not at least seen as a solid double.

5. San Francisco Giants: Buster Posey, C, Florida State
The Giants would love for Hosmer to drop here, but barring that, Posey does make the most sense. Word of a big bonus demand could force the Giants to look elsewhere, perhaps to Justin Smoak, but the thinking is they’ll take the guy they feel is the best on their board and that will be Posey.
Last projection: Posey

by FairweatherFan on Jun 5, 2008 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions
Posey
I don’t get all the fuss about Posey. He could get bigger but doesn’t appear to have a great future as a power hitter. His arm according to the scouting report “plays below average”. His swing looks OK, but nothing to get excited about. Sure he could hit for average with decent walking skills, but I just don’t see him being an improvement over Pablito.
I don’t get all of the dissent on Posey. A .280/.380/.410 catcher hitter with Gold Glove defense is insanely valuable. In a BP chat, they would estimate something like that to be 8 WARP. And that isn’t crazy pie-in-the-sky forecasting, either. Crazy talk would be thinking that he’ll hit for a little bit of power, which he still might. Flip a coin for me for Smoak or Posey, but I’d be geeked on either one.
by Grant Brisbee on Jun 5, 2008 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions
I’d say more like 280/350/410 with average defense. I don’t see why people think his defense is that great when his scouting report says that his arm plays below average. I mean blocking balls is important, but I always thought the thing that separated good catchers from great ones was the cannon.
To clarify, I’ve not seen one scouting report that says his arm is on the weak side. Do you have a link?
Yeah, his arm is supposed to be ridiculously quick, especially considering that he is still learning the position.
by Grant Brisbee on Jun 5, 2008 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions
I don't buy it
I dunno, I’ve read that his arm is a plus from BA and I’m sure BP has said something similar. He came into college as a SS originally, so I’m thinking he had a good enough arm to play that position.
No
it’s actually blocking the balls in the dirt. You can have an average arm and still throw a lot of runners out if you have a good pitching staff and solid footwork, but turing sliders into wild pitches and lazy ass passed balls will kill a pitching staff. That’s what used to dive me nuts about Benito Santiago. Cannon arm, good athlete, no interest in getting his ass on the ground to take the ball off his chest. He would ole the ball every time.
Bust a Move
Posey would be a great addition to any team and clubhouse. Not only is the kid talented but he is also a leader.
I get the impression Posey is going to be a major bust to whoever picks him up.

5. SAN FRANCISCO. The Giants play the draft as close to the vest as anyone, so this is the hardest pick to read in the upper half of the first round. Word is that they covet Hosmer, so would they be willing to pay big money for Posey? San Francisco needs hitters, and they could get an elite bat like Smoak or Miami first baseman Yonder Alonso.

How about
Justin Smoak 1b South Carolina at 5
Connor Gillaspie 3B Wichita State at 37
Both have advanced bats although Connor’s ability to stay at third has been questioned. These could be the corner infield for the giants as early at 2010.

My dreaM world would somehow have Isaac Galloway still chilling in the 3rd Round … but that highly unlikely.
Cain is Able ...
I stick by Tyler Ladendorf
Ladendorf is going to be a monster, and the Giants should be upset they missed out on him last year.

Probably not. His draft stock has been shooting straight up.

I like Gillaspie's approach at the plate though ...
And Im not really on board with the idea of having another speedy middle inflieder in the system. We have a ton of those already.
I saw a comparison of Gillaspie as a 3b version of Paul O’neil. Sign me up for that

Ladendorf
Shortstop. Led all Juco players in steals (65 in 65 attempts) last season while hitting .425. This year, leads all Juco players with a .542 average, 31 steals out of 32 attempts, and he jumped his home run total from 1 to 16.
Giants took him in the 39th round, but didn’t meet his bonus demands, so they definitely know him.

Keith Law
Has him rated as the 65tyh best prospect. I guess he wont make it to the 3rd round.
Cain is Able ...
What makes you think he’ll be a monster? I think he’s athletic as heck, but he’s going to be more of a 7th placed hitter than a middle-of-the-order guy.
He’s a very good average hitter with elite speed and good plate discipline. His power is more questionable, but he’s got the four other tools in spades.

I am a Giants fan. Thus I enjoy my pain. Currently enjoying it more then usual.
trade exception
What trade exception are you talking about? I thought that you could not trade picks in baseball or did I miss something.
With the #5 pick

Im in agreement with most that getting a positional prospect
Is ideal … but Im not going to kill myself if we land a player of Matusz’ caliber. The guy is going to be very very good. We could always trade a Matt Cain in a few years before he reaches free agency and with the boys coming up i.e. Bum, Anderson, Matusz to get positional prospects.
Just a thought

trading pitchers for position players
not really this club’s forte

For you draft experts
Anybody know if anybody from Sonoma State University will be drafted? Our school made it to the D-II tournament and were one win away from going to the championship. Obviously nobody in the first or second round but anybody hear anything?
I haven’t seen any projections. Probably not likely to go first day (5 rounds).

It always gives me great pleasure to see the Rays fail miserably, have no fans, always be in last place, and have a shitty stadium, what with St. Petersburg trying to steal the Giants back in 1992.
Too bad about this season, though.
TB..Rays
I like to see them do well. When a team has done so miserably for as long as they have I want to see them do well.

no… just lurk. I think I tried to sign up for an account once there back like 5 years ago, but for some reason it didn’t work. Now I just scroll through the political threads for pictures.

I’m mad… I have a settlement conference that starts right at the same time as the draft.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
btw… do you ever visit the off topic or politics forums on warriorsworld? The off topic forum in particular is way better than the main one. Why don’t you ever post there?

I've got a weird feeling that TB
Will do something crazy and not pick T. Beckham.
Anyone else? It just seems odd to announce it before it happens. Maybe leverage against Posey?
Because I love my local high school baseball scene...
I want to draft LJ Hoes, subject of the front page article my morning newspaper: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/04/AR2008060403822.html
He’s #137 on BA’s Top 200.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
is it immature to make a joke about LJ having Hoes in different area codes? (and if that is immature then I don’t want to be mature)

That team is not only bad but clearly dysfunctional as well.
