Open Draft Day Thread I

Teams drafting a player named Tim in the first round for three consecutive years have never not won a championship the following year. Yet another reason why we need to package our trade exception and Ray Durham's expiring contract to move up in this draft.

Smoak or Hosmer please.

If we draft Matusz or Crow, I think this board will be highly displeased. A lot of rumors flying around that the Giants may make a huge reach at #5 and pick a player at the end of 1st round at #5.

I’m with you – Smoak or Hosmer, and try not to be too displeased if it’s Posey. Might cry if they take Gordon Beckham.

by GiantsFanInExile on Jun 5, 2008 8:43 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

From what I know (and that's not much)

I’d be ecstatic with Smoak, Hosmer, or if by some miracle they’re available, Tim Beckham or Pedro Alvarez.

I’d be happy with Alonso. I’d be okay with Posey. Even Skipworth and G. Beckham I could live with.

I am simply NOT OKAY with a pitcher this time. The stakes are just too frigging high, and for the love of gawd, WE’VE GOT GOOD YOUNG PITCHERS ALREADY!

here’s more from the craptacular Dayn Perry (whom I dislike with a passion)

4. Justin Smoak, 1B, South Carolina
The switch-hitting Smoak is probably the best pure hitter in the draft not named Pedro Alvarez. Controls the strike zone, takes his walks, ridiculous power. And he’s done it all against SEC competition. His defense at first is acceptable, but it’s his bat that makes him a potential star. He’s the surest bet available.

What would you expect from a guy that got put on waivers? I think people don’t mind Castillo because he’s the lesser of a great number of evils.

The last time the Giants had a good option at 3B was when Aramis went on free agency, but even then people were lukewarm to the idea.

Players the Giants could draft who would not cause me great emotional distress:

T. Beckham
G. Beckham
Alvarez
Smoak
Hosmer
Alonso
Wallace
Posey
hell, probably even Skipworth, Matusz, and Crow

What’s been that common theme of Grant’s post for the week? “It would be pretty hard for the Giants to eff this up.” Which is exactly why I’m worried. Because these are the Giants we’re talking about here.

God, I hope it’s Smoak. That would just make everyone so happy, and I’m 99.9% sure we wouldn’t really regret it. While there could be better players picked after him, I think it would take a lot of bad luck for the South Carolinan not to pan out.

Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

by Smoke on the Water on Jun 5, 2008 9:21 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Main reason that I (and I think everyone else) want smoak

Is that he has the highest probability of playing 1b for the ML team. He may not have the highest ceiling of players avaliable, but his combination of ceiling and probability is the best.

IMO.

We really need to draft a player that turns out.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Jun 5, 2008 9:25 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

exactly

the floor is so solid with Smoak, it’s hard to imagine us really regretting that pick. Forgive my poor metaphor, but depending on who’s picked after him, drafting Smoak may not be viewed as a home run in a few years. But it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which it’s not at least seen as a solid double.

Jonathan Mayo final mock draft.

5. San Francisco Giants: Buster Posey, C, Florida State
The Giants would love for Hosmer to drop here, but barring that, Posey does make the most sense. Word of a big bonus demand could force the Giants to look elsewhere, perhaps to Justin Smoak, but the thinking is they’ll take the guy they feel is the best on their board and that will be Posey.
Last projection: Posey

by wilriv21 on Jun 5, 2008 9:26 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Posey

I don’t get all the fuss about Posey. He could get bigger but doesn’t appear to have a great future as a power hitter. His arm according to the scouting report “plays below average”. His swing looks OK, but nothing to get excited about. Sure he could hit for average with decent walking skills, but I just don’t see him being an improvement over Pablito.

by Change Up on Jun 5, 2008 9:36 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t get all of the dissent on Posey. A .280/.380/.410 catcher hitter with Gold Glove defense is insanely valuable. In a BP chat, they would estimate something like that to be 8 WARP. And that isn’t crazy pie-in-the-sky forecasting, either. Crazy talk would be thinking that he’ll hit for a little bit of power, which he still might. Flip a coin for me for Smoak or Posey, but I’d be geeked on either one.

by Grant on Jun 5, 2008 10:05 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Goldstein has Posey as the #3 best player in the draft. I like Posey, too, athletic and if he stays at catcher, he’ll have a lot of value.

by xanthan on Jun 5, 2008 10:06 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’d say more like 280/350/410 with average defense. I don’t see why people think his defense is that great when his scouting report says that his arm plays below average. I mean blocking balls is important, but I always thought the thing that separated good catchers from great ones was the cannon.

by Change Up on Jun 5, 2008 10:10 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Below average arm?

He hits 94mph on the mound, his arm is a plus for him.

by xanthan on Jun 5, 2008 10:13 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To clarify, I’ve not seen one scouting report that says his arm is on the weak side. Do you have a link?

by xanthan on Jun 5, 2008 10:14 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, his arm is supposed to be ridiculously quick, especially considering that he is still learning the position.

by Grant on Jun 5, 2008 10:16 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't buy it

I dunno, I’ve read that his arm is a plus from BA and I’m sure BP has said something similar. He came into college as a SS originally, so I’m thinking he had a good enough arm to play that position.

by xanthan on Jun 5, 2008 10:23 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Posey

has all the tools needed to be a successful GG catcher and the versatility to move out from behind the plate.

by wilriv21 on Jun 5, 2008 10:24 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No

it’s actually blocking the balls in the dirt. You can have an average arm and still throw a lot of runners out if you have a good pitching staff and solid footwork, but turing sliders into wild pitches and lazy ass passed balls will kill a pitching staff. That’s what used to dive me nuts about Benito Santiago. Cannon arm, good athlete, no interest in getting his ass on the ground to take the ball off his chest. He would ole the ball every time.

5. SAN FRANCISCO. The Giants play the draft as close to the vest as anyone, so this is the hardest pick to read in the upper half of the first round. Word is that they covet Hosmer, so would they be willing to pay big money for Posey? San Francisco needs hitters, and they could get an elite bat like Smoak or Miami first baseman Yonder Alonso.

the 3-4 could be interesting

it makes sense to have an extra outfielder with all the ground in right center at Mays Field. the question is, which position do you remove from the infield? Maybe you have the SS play straight up the middle and don’t have a 2B?
