TRAVEL DAY PONDERING: All-likable team? Favorite Non-Giants?
If you could compose a lineup of players who never played for the Giants, but you WISH did at some point, what would that lineup look like?
This doesn't necessarily mean that these players were the greatest players of their era. It could just be that they signed a ball in a parking lot for you or dated your mom. It could be that they grew up in the Bay Area and would have made an interesting storyline if they suited up in the black and orange.
1) Players past or present
2) Never played for the Giants
3) Oddball choices - say why! (E.g. if Tom Niedenfuer shows up, you got some 'splainin' to do.)
Here's mine:
C - Izzy Alcantara (karate-kicking cathcer, dude can fight)
1B - Mark Grace (my mom babysat him when he was in elementary school, no joke)
2B - Ryne Sandberg
SS - Barry Larkin (solid player, always seemed like a good guy)
3B - George Brett (gamer)
LF - Carl Crawford (met him at San Diego Zoo, actually took a picture of my son since he was wearing his Devil Rays Little League hat)
CF - Grady Sizemore (we have the same birthday, hustles like a MF)
RF - Roberto Clemente (no explanation needed)
SP - David Wells (was a great tipper when he came to the bar I used to work at)
RP - Turk Wendell (just for being a nut)
CP - Jeff Reardon (signed a bunch of cards for me when I was a kid...this was pre-armed robbery arrest)

I like
Peanut butter and Jelly.
Eugeniooooooo!!!!
My Team
C – Mickey Tettleton – You had the coolest batting stance and you were pretty damned good. Career OPS+ of 121
1B – Fred McGriff – Major League Super Star!
2B – Akinorwi Iwamura – Versatile, does a little bit of everything.
SS – Adam Everett – I like rangey, all-glove, no-hit shortstops.
3B – Chipper Jones – I’ve always slightly disliked the Braves, but, I’ve always been a fan of Chipper Jones. Sweet swing and a future HoF’er.
OF – Lance Berkman – His nickname is Fat Elvis. He’s pretty good, too.
OF – Ichiro – Who doesn’t like Ichiro?
OF – Curtis Granderson – I’m a big Granderson fan, I love his mix of power and speed. I think he’s underrated.
SP – Tim Wakefield – Love knuckleballers.
RP – Chad Bradford – Love funky submariners.
CL – Joakim Soria – Dominates with a low-90’s fastball and a big, slow, looping curve in the mid-60’s.
not too old . . .
to be called Chipper though?

rp- rob dibble (he loves heavy metal, so do i)

I would buy season tickets for this team, even if I needed a mortgage
C: Dave Duncan (for some reason one of my favorite baseball cards was him on the O’s)
1B: Boog Powell
2B: Mike Gallego, one of my all-time favorites: great fielder and .250 hitter, but the 1 for 4 always came when it counted
SS: Rob Sperring (cf. Duncan; this time a Cubs card)
3B: Brooks Robinson
OF: Reggie Smith (while getting a beer poured on his head in Candlestick)
OF: Rickey
OF: Matt Stairs (probably my favorite current player not in SF)
DH: (sorry) Jack Cust (I had him at LF but I’ve seen him playing OF this year…)
SP: Luis Tiant (if you don’t know why you never saw him pitch- 19 CG in ‘68 with .8
WHIP- not a typo- I only saw him on the Red Sux unfortunately)
RP: Grant Jackson (another baseball card favorite)
CL: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE Come on, he pitched one season for every team and nobody thinks of him as a Giant
Manager: Billy Martin
Off the top of my head...
C – Bruce Benidict
1B – Keith Hernandez (favorite player ever)
2B -Ryan Sandberg
SS – Cal Ripkin Jr. (already looks good in orange and black)
3B – George Brett (best non Bonds hitter I’ve seen in person)
LF – Rickey
CF – Dale Murphy
RF – Dave Parker (pre-fat version)
SP – Dwight Gooden (rookie version)
RP – Goose Gossage
Manager – Earl Weaver
I'm only chiming in with one name...
I always wished the great Greg Maddux pitched for the Giants. I love his style, and just that he’s smarter than everyone else in baseball. He’s pretty much awesome.
"He called the sh** POOP!" -- Adam Sandler
C- Johnny Bench. Why has no one listed him yet. Bench made me want to be a catcher.
1B-Boog Powell.
2B-Akinori Iwamura. Standard Japanese Player. Solid, versitile, consistent
SS-Chin-lung Hu. Potential to be a very good ML SS
3B-Brooks Robinson. All Glove, All the Time.
RF- Dave Winfield. Saw him throw a guy out from the RF wall as rookie. Huge Bat
CF-Curtis Granderson. Good Guy. Good Speed. Good Glove. Good Arm
LF-Carl Crawford- Speed,Bat,Speed
SP-Maddux. When you need it done. Guy can just straight up “pitch”.
RP- Al Hrabosky. 1975 Version
My adopted son Matt Downs. Bill Mueller without the two-flap helmet .
No Bench
My dad always played the Reds (imitating batting stances, etc.) during backyard baseball, so I always didn’t like them (his Johnny Bench always seemed to hit homers off whoever my pitcher happened to be).

C Charles Johnson. I really liked him back in the day, as he was great with the bat and the glove.
1B Willie Stargell, how can you not like him? He’s from the area and a Hall of Famer.
2B Harold Reynolds. I’d hug him.
3B Robin Ventura was pretty cool. Just a consistently good hitter. Sucked when he went to the Dodgers though.
SS Jimmy Rollins. He’s a pretty cool guy plus a top notch shortstop. Though Omar was my favorite for years before he came to the Giants, otherwise he’d be on this list.
OF Ichiro. Simply the best I’ve ever seen
OF Griffey, Jr. was one of my favorite players since the beginning of my baseball fandom
OF Kirby Puckett. It was a real drag when I found out about his off the field trouble. When he lost his eyesight, gained all the weight and when he died, all the problems just about broke my heart. I just plain liked him.
SP Sandy Koufax. Don’t care if he was a Dodger. Just dominant on the mound, and if you’ve read Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy, you’ll know what I mean by saying he’s a very fascinating figure. I regret that I was born too late to see him pitch.
RP Jesse Orosco because he’s older than dirt
CL Ambiorix Burgos, great name
