Rainbow Sandals....Who Knew? (I didn't)
This is my first one of these, so here goes. Tim Lincecum is featured in this week in SI's "Pop Culture Grid." For those of you unfamiliar with this feature, they (SI) ask a bunch of different athletes the same five questions and put their answers in a table of sorts. I learned the following about Timmy:
1. He wants "nobody" to stop talking.
2. "That bat looks bigger than you" is the weirdest thing a fan has ever said to him.
3. His favorite shoes are rainbow sandals.
4. He has, apparently, never been to a concert of any kind in his entire life.
5. He doesn't leave home without his keys, wallet and cellphone.
This really seems like a lackluster interview. Timmy should stick to pitching (brilliantly) and forgo the prospective sportscaster job.
Now, to go find me some rainbow sandals...

I’ve never owned a pair but I do basically live in Old Navy flip flops from March-October. I saw Tim wearing flip flops at Fanfest.

Those look like the shoes Tim was wearing at Fanfest, except I think I remember his being black…
I’m a shoe fetishist, not a foot fetishist. I look at everyone’s shoes, everywhere, every day.

Me too. I didn’t see Tim at the fanfest, but I saw Brian Wilson (some kind of leather shoes, laceless, black I think, or maybe dark brown). Ishikawa was wearing some kind of nike air force 1s, IIRC.

IIRC he said he’s not a fan of grunge. I know that’s been over for a while, but that was the omg scene not that long ago. Which is good because hopefully this means he’s not one of those annoying scene kiddies who should go around wearing a nametag that says “Hello my name is Please Punch Me in the Face.”

well...
like most northwesterners, “we” realize that grunge was just a made-up catch phrase used by record label weasels to boil down a variety of northwest regional styles in order to sell to middle America as “the next big thing”, much like they did with “new wave”, “alternative”, and now “indie”.
plus, dig this: “grunge” was over in 1993. Timmy was, what two years old?

Yeah it is sort of a blah interview. He does a lot better on the KNBR shows. He deadpans a lot of jokes.

Bellevue is a suburb of seattle. I like to compare the “east side” where Bellevue is to Marin county.

Rainbow Sandals
Used to be a small company located in San Clemente, Ca. My friends turned me onto them in ~ 2000 @ college when they were still hand made in a small shop in San Clemente.
It used to be that you could drive to their “factory” and buy blemished sandals pretty much right off the assembly line for way cheap. It used to be that if you ever had a strap pull out of the sandal, you could send it back to them and they would replace it – for life.
Most awesome sandals ever. I’ve probably owned 10 pair in the last 8 years.
So, at some point they became popular. Demand went up and places like nordstrom and pacsun started carrying them.
I was just down there last year and now the sandals are made in China. The “factory” is little more than a storefront now and nothing appears to be made there. No more blemished sandal deals.
The quality of the sandals is also now lower, but the price is significantly higher.
Go figure.

Pacsun , lol
Some years ago (Maybe the grunge years!) I was struck by the irony that all I could see in the store was decidedly not sunny at all but rather drab.

Geez
I guess it’s time to dump my Teva flip flops. While we’re on the subject, I always wanted a pair of the Reefs with the bottle opener in them, until I was at AT&T (called SBC Park at the time) waiting to pee out some Guniess. Then it occured to me that I would be opening a beer after standing in the bathroom…anyway. Viva Rainbow Sandals.

hmmm
i have those bottle opener sandals and its never really occured to me that ive been walking around in bathrooms in them for quite some time. ......you just put a bad taste in my mouth i dont think ill be able to wash out AND made me feel like a retard AND made me throw away a perfectly good pair of sandals. thanks a lot tyrannoman!

Sorry sam! If you need another bottle opener, I have a broken Giants’ one that used to have Kuip calling a Bonds HR I can send you. Don’t throw away the flip flops, just never, ever open a bottle with them agian. I suggest a nice, cold Anchor Steam to rid your mouth of that awful taster.

Lincecum's favorite movie is Grandma's Boy
If that tells you anything about the guy. They gave that nugget of pothead goodness at a Giants v Reds game in April (I think)...It was when they gave out the poster from the West Coast opener at Seal’s stadium..whenever that was..
