Fan Post Registration Fan Post
So, it has been mentioned, many, many times that there are too many fan posts, and particularly too many on the same subjects. So, I would propose to use this Fan Post thread as an area where future fan posts topics can be vetted and approved by the community - so that we don't have to waste our precious time reading redundant fan posts - or even worse - berating those who "accidentally" post another fan post when a perfectly adequate one already exists.
I really think that having a forum where we can suggest and debate the validity of topics proposed before they actually appear as topics will substantially improve the signal-to-noise ratio of McCovey Chronicles.
Thanks for your time and consideration,
A concerned MCC net.denizen
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Well, can we really anticipate all the future breaking news stories that will come down the pike? Sure, there’s signing Posey, signing that Ramirez dude out of DR, the eventual explosion of Durham’s hamstrings et al, but news is simply news and can’t always be anticipated.

perhaps
we could have a matrix-like (not in the film sense) system or ontology where by we could pre-classify all possible topics.
For example:
Majors ---> Trades -------> Proposed -------> Actual (also a child of current events) ---> Current Events --------> Games --------> Non games ----->Injuries. ----->Bitching about the front office
etc,, etc., we could even break it down by postion:
Current Events ->Injuries -> Middle Infielders—> Ray Durham
And a similar one for minor leagues…

I disagree with the premise
The last fanpost on my screen was created 3 days ago. IMO, that’s about right.
If a discussion is interesting enough to last more than three days, then it’s probably gotten ridiculously long and unwieldy and needs a fresh start in a new fanpost anyway.

Yeah but...
There were 7 new posts yesterday and already 5 today. At this current frenzied rate, your “just about right” 3 days, will be no more.
I have no problem with new fanposts. Lord knows I’ve started my share, but I always try to make sure it’s not already being discussed and is discussion-worthy. I get a little annoyed with ones where people obvioulsy haven’t bothered to read what’s already in play. I hate to sound all elitest, but it’s often noobs who join up and immeditaely start pumping out new fan posts.

But yes, I agree with you. When I write a fanpost, I typically put a lot of thought into it (even if that thought only revolves around hating Jose Castillo).
A lot of the time I feel that people don’t. They have an idea spontaneously pop into their head and immediately t ype it out and hit submit.
It happens on every message board – I’m glad I am not the only one who get’s annoyed with it.

YES, dammit. I propose the following rules:
1. If your point is 50% related to a point already made in a fanpost in the previous week (with respect to Bhaakon and his point about 3 days), put it in THAT fanpost. Ruling: no new fanpost.
2. If you’re floating an idea or argument to challenge conventional wisdom or to encourage fresh or critical thinking, THANK YOU!! WELCOME!! But do understand that if you undertake that, you’re going to need to have either data or logic (if it’s a thought experiment not susceptible to data), or preferably both. Ruling: post… but with due diligence.
3. When in doubt, toss a coin. Ruling: if it lands, don’t post.

I’d rather not turn the FanPosts part of this site into another Digg. People will say stupid things and make posts they shouldn’t. Then they’ll get mocked for it and they’ll learn. That’s how it works. I mean, my first diary was this masterpiece. I got rightly called out for it. I learned not to be so stupid (however, I only applied that new knowledge to creating new diaries).
The way we get new members to contribute here is to let them say what they want and then react appropriately. This idea would be counterproductive to that.

Perhaps a refresher on the Plea to the McCoven is in order
A plea to all of the McCovenby irwin on Aug 12, 2006 2:00 AM EDT
Hello all,
I would like to make a few small requests of all the McCoven, myself included. [In no particular order]1.) Think before you post. Maybe even twice.
2.) If you make an assertion, please try to show facts/data to show why you assert it.
3.) Use punctuation and English grammar. It helps. A lot. I’m serious.
4.) Proofread and preview. [Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa] (but not in gameday threads)
5.) Try to add a new opinion, question, theory, fact, or observation to a conversation. Open a dialog is far more interesting than shouting matches.
6.) Be nice to each other – everybody here is a fan who wants to see the Giants in the World Series.
7.) Try not to complain without offering a reasonable, better idea. [I know, it’s tough these days]
8.) Remember that being a fan should be fun. If it isn’t, find another diversion. But nobody should expect you to act like an east coast fanboy moron. I’ve always thought Giants fans had a better base in reality than most others – and I am proud of it. I feel the ability to be a fan of a player while still recognizing his flaw is a mark of a true fan.
9.) Ignore 1-8 for any of my comments.

Suggestion...
Perhaps the Minor League Notes section could be either posted on the main page by Steve himself or moved there by Grant or another mod. I know the moving part is possible, I’ve seen it on other boards. Whether that clears the FanPost from that area or not I don’t recall. That way we could have it on the main page, be registered for the time it is relevant (a few days perhaps) and then it goes down the pipe. That way it would also get more attention I would bet. A reformatting would have to occur (slight, perhaps the scores up top, a continue reading and then the minor lines below it) but that I believe would get it also more attention.

I concur...
Nothing against Steve and all the Minor Lines readers…but at the clip we’re going, something really extraordinary must happen to have a non-Minor Lines recommended fan post stay up for more than a day or so.
Adoptive papa to Omar...so basically I'm screwed.

Some more suggestions...
...that I originally posted over in the contentious Minor Lines thread, which would require some amount of technical work from the SBNation folks:
- a more time-sensitive recommendations system, where today’s recs are worth more than yesterday’s. Threads that are continuing to get activity, and recommendations, would stay up longer than ones that get read only on the first day they’re posted.
- much more simply, increase the number of fan posts in the recommended and/or recent lists. Bump the rec list from 5 to 8. I’m not sure why the recent list currently only has 5 entries (it was 7 earlier today), while other SBNation blogs show 10. Keeping this at a minimum of 10 or bumping it up to 12 or 15 would be nice. (On some blogs, you can configure the number of recent posts you want to see on the front page.)
- A watch list would be helpful for individual users to track threads, although it doesn’t help with overall visibility to bring new participants into a discussion. There have definitely been times when I’ve wanted an easy way to ‘bookmark’ specific threads.
