Bill Hall wants trade. Me wants Bill Hall
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/06/bill-hall-hopes.html
Mr. Hall is quite unhappy with his situation in Milwaukee. I actually don't think that it would take that much to snag him. Threets and Misch or something of the sorts? They have both Laporta and Gamel at 3rd in the minors. I know he's struggled, but he has definite power potential and he can play 3rd short and 2nd. Hall would be a great pickup for the Giants. Thoughts?

Gamel, Gamel, Gamel!!!
Er….I could be talked into that. Bill Hall, not so much.

+1 on Gamel
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' I would take
Bill Hall for garbage. He is the type of player the Giants should take a risk on.
But not at the expense of anything useful, Misch would be a good option.

I’m not a big fan of Hall but if he can handle short, he’d have some value. RZR had him as pretty bad at that position in ‘05 when he played 500-some innings there. But, the Fielding Bible had him as a +24 SS from ‘05-’07, which is respectable.
Also, you have to consider his contract.
Bill Hall 3b
4 years/$24M (2007-10), plus 2011 club option
* re-signed 2/07 (avoided arbitration, $4.125M-$3M)
* $0.5M signing bonus
* 07:$3M, 08:$4.8M, 09:$6.8M, 10:$8.4M,
11:$9.25M club option ($0.5M buyout)
* 1 year/$0.418M (2006), re-signed 3/06
* 1 year/$0.344M (2005), re-signed 2/05
* 1 year/$0.31M (2004), re-signed 3 /04
* agent: Gaylord Sports
* ML service: 4.099
He strikes out a ton and is already 28-years-old. I’ll have to think about it some more, maybe look at some of his other numbers. But, my initial reaction is, if he can handle SS still he might have some value.
by xanthan on Jun 3, 2008 8:25 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Is he that good?
08: $4.8M prorated to $2.4 for 1/2 season
09: $6.8M
10: $8.4M
11: $9.25M club option or $0.5M buyout
That is about $18M for 2.5 seasons.

It's a gamble.
If he returns to 2006 form? Absolutely. If he plays @ 2007 pace? Well, he’s a slightly better Jose Castillo who can play more positions, but I don’t know if that is worth the extra 7.5 M or whatever it works out to.
If the price were lower, I would say absolutely as Bill Hall is the exact type of player SF should be looking at picking up to spell the gap between the team of today and the fantasy team of 2012. (And he plays a position that we have no current or future answer for unless you think of Castillo as an answer for 3b.)
He is also 28, which makes him still “young” by SF farm standards (Castillo, Ort and Lewis are all 27).
I guess the ultimate question then lies in the details of whatever deal. Is he worth it strait up @ 18 million for the 2.5? eh – possibly not. If we can get the brewers to take up some of that salary or manage to swap them one of our guys who has an appreciable salary (henessey?) then it starts to make more sense.
I like the idea of Hall at the hot corner for the Giants, I just don’t know If I think it is the best use of 7-8m a year (IE, who else could we get @ that price).

You’d have to throw Frandsen in the mix for next year, as well. I guess Hall, Furcal (yes, I’m still on that bandwagon even though he can’t seem to find the field), Frandsen, and Mystery 1B would be an improvement over the current infield.

ooh
mystery 1B.
he sounds so . . . mysterious. Is he tall, dark and patient (at the plate)?

I certainly think he’d be worth taking a chance on, but i wouldn’t give up much to get him, it’d only be worth it if it were a low risk move.

Bill Hall for saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaale
I’d look at him only as a player that might be useful to trade if he turns it around. If we traded for him, he’d probably not have a big shot at starting time, mostly as a fill in ranking after Burris/Castillo on the roster. He’d probably steal some PT from Richie if we had another RH bat to place first.

Cost is a big issue for me. If we are going to trade anyone it would have to be Winn, IMO. I’m for getting him but he is owed over $15 million the next two years. Trade him for Winn now and it only costs roughly $5 million net ($2 mil this year, $15 the next two less the $12 mil owed Randy this year and next).
Now the question becomes can we get someone cheaper and/or with more upside for Randy. I have no clue on that one.

3 team trade
For the Giants to acquire Hall, I think another team is needed.
Brewers don’t need Winn or Durham, Giants probably need to move that money before acquiring Hall.
Any suggestions for a 3rd team?

I'm not so sure
It is my personal suspicion that in spite of the reported availability of money due to Morris and part of Bond’s money being off of the budget this year, and the infusion of 30M from MLB.tv that the Giants did not choose to look for more FA help this year in anticipation of lower ticket sales. And to see how the Giants are aggressively trying to sell ANY tickets at VERY discounted prices, I am only further re-enforced in this suspicion.
I think that there IS a money issue, and there will be until Roberts, Durham, and Aurillia are all gone and Bond’s contract is finally paid off. That will be starting next year.

Bonds
The Giants will continue to pay Bonds money for quite some time. Whether or not that money has already been set aside or if it’ll affect their year-to-year operations is something I’m unclear on, though.

I had only heard that it was for this year. I’m not aware of the details of the deal.

My understanding...
and I don’t remember where I read it, was that we owe Bonds for another 4 years or more. Does anybody remember the details on the Bonds contract?

I can’t agree with you on the FA theory. There were not any players on the market that could really be difference makers, I think. I was lukewarm on the Rowand signing, but he is a player who seems to bring a lot to a young team, and his numbers so far have been outstanding. I’m not sure who else the Giants’ should’ve really gone after this year.
by tyrannoman on Jun 3, 2008 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think there is a money issue like a set payroll limit that the ownership tells the baseball people they cannot exceed. I do think that money is always an issue for a rebuilding team and when you spend money stupidly (like $8.4 million in 2010 to a 3B hitting .225) it screws up the rebuilding process.

the responses over at traderumors (thanx for the link, travis) are all over the place. One person says Hall got benched against righties, in favor of Branyan, because Hall doesnt hit em well.
This yr 164 224 324 vs RHP, that’s brutal.
Another says with a more open stance that could be fixed.
I was pretty enthused about getting hall last winter, esp for Roberts or somebody pricey like that. But now, he’s griping and hitting has declined. Could be an albatross in 2010.
And just ‘cz a guy gripes doesn’t mean he gets the trade.

Personally, I’d rather have Jose Castillo for $650 grand and the flexibility of being able to DFA his ass at any given moment than commit to paying Bill Hall $6.8 million next year and $8.4 million is 2010.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 3, 2008 1:28 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree also, but think Castillo also has value in being able to back up all kinds of inflield positions. Stick some goggles on him and he’s a slightly tubbier version of Vizcaino.

I thought about posting something like this. However, I went against that idea for a number of reasons.
1. Bill Hall is signed to a lot of money. Like 18.1 for the rest of his contract from now.
Compromise: If for some reason Doug Melvin would be dumb enough to do this…I would get Hall along with cash(somewhere in the range of us only paying him league minimum…that would be good) Melvin is not that dumb.
2. He has had horrible fielding numbers this year, something like 13 errors. Jose Castillo is wayy better. I think he has half that.
3. Finally, do I want Pedro Feliz part 2 gone darker, for about a million or so more?? Prolly not.
While I agree that if Bill Hall returns to 2006 form, then by all means go after him. But the truth of the matter is, he batted well in 05 and 06. The power numbers only occurred in 06 and he has had below Feliz HR numbers all the other seasons. Why would I want to watch that? I also like the doubles machine that Castillo has turned into.
by Scronjsn on Jun 3, 2008 3:26 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
They’d have to eat a lot of salary. Was he decent as a SS? The Giants can afford to give him 600 AB’s between 3B/SS/2B and see if he can bounce back.
