The Only Buy This Trade Deadline I Want To Make
And it ain't for a bat it is for an arm. I want to trade for Greg Maddux. Yes, I still want to sell Ray Durham and Randy Winn but I also want to buy the Mad Dogg. We are only 5 games out of first place in the NL West. We still probably won't win it but I think we could make things mighty interesting with a starting Rotation of Lincecum, Sanchez, Cain, Maddux, and Zito. Move Correia to the bullpen and trade Yabu who is not part of our future.
By selling Durham and Winn we can open up RF for Nate Schierholtz and give Rich Aurilia an everyday job at 3B moving Castillo to 2B. I would also like to see Omar accept that he is at then end of his Hall Of Fame Career and willing to be a bench player until he retires at the end of the year. This would then give us the following lineup and bench that I think could both compete this year in the very weak NL West and build for the future in 2009 and beyond.
Lineup:
Fred Lewis LF
Jose Castillo 2B
Aaron Rowand CF
Bengie Molina C
John Bowker 1B
Rich Aurilia 3B
Nate Schierholtz RF
Manny Burriss SS
Bench:
Omar Vizquel SS
Dave Roberts OF
Dan Ortmeier 1B/OF
Brian Horwitz 1B/OF
Steve Holm C
Note:
Travis Denker returns to Fresno to play every day.

you’re forgetting Kevin Frandsen who was supposed to be the starting 2nd baseman this year.

He is on the 60 Day DL and is very unlikely to be ready for Rehab in time to play in the minors in August and their are no Minors in September.

I think Frandsen was more likely to start at 3B this year had he not been hurt. If he hadn’t been hurt, Castillo probbaly wouldn’t have even been on the roster.

Because
1. It takes Correia out of a starting role, where he belongs
2. It has two of our most valuable trading chips failing to bring in any value for the future of our team
3. Maddux won’t put the Giants nearly over the top
4. What the hell are some examples of prospects not part of our future but possibly in the Padres’?

because Maddux won’t put the Giants at a level where they could compete for a World Series. The prospects that we get for Winn and Durham could someday be contributors to a World Series team.

Competition isn't the only reason maddux signed with SD
It’s close to his home in Vegas.
The Giants are closer to contention than SD, but so is just about every other team in baseball, many of which are also more legitimate contenders than the Giants .

There are no contending teams that need pitching?
That’s hard to believe. Just because they have a better team ERA than the Giants doesn’t mean they aren’t looking for an arm.
Besides, the key to fixing the rotation isn’t so much addition as subtraction: bouncing Zito to the pen. Acquiring Maddux wouldn’t make Zito’s contract smaller.

I said that none of the contenders that need pitching are as close to Vegas as the Giants are.
With regards to Ztio, I think his last start is truely the beginning of a real turn around. I am not trying to solve the issue of his contract. I am rather trying to compete this year (adding Maddux) while still building for the future (subtracting Durham and Winn).

The Giants aren’t as close to a playoff berth as the contenders farther away from Vegas are. If Maddux wants to compete, he’ll demand a trade to a team that’s actually good instead of one that’s barely clinging to life because of how bad its division is. If Maddux doesn’t want to compete, he’ll stay put.

Agree with Burriss at SS, Castillo to 2b and trade of Durham. Moving Correia pack to pen is intriguing however the Giants will have to deal with the number of innings Sanchez will pitch this season so another starting pitcher is going to have to take some of Sanchez’s starts. Do not want Maddux.

We still probably won’t win it
GRM, you yourself admit that even if we make all the moves you suggest, we STILL probably won’t win the West. And in following your hare-brained scheme to rent an old, washed-up starter, we trade away prospects that might be part of competitive future Giants teams? And the alleged upside is that it’ll be good for the young kids to be in a pennant race?
Seriously? Do even you believe the stuff you’re saying here?
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
by delorean on Jun 29, 2008 8:01 PM PDT 0 recs
Linguistic thanks.
Just wanted to take a second to thank you for saying HARE-brained, rather than the erroneous but more common HAIR-brained. Hair-brained doesn’t even make sense—just because a brain has hair on it, while unusual, there is nothing that would necessarily render that brain weaker or crazed. Hare-brained, on the other hand, fits the long metaphor of rabbits being capricious (a word that itself refers to goats, thus Capricorn) or crazed or liable to pretend to be a barber so as to humiliate Elmer Fudd.
Thank you.
Oh, and giving up ANYthing, even a box of pencils or a bag of that lime paste they use to make the foul lines on the field, in order to get a summer rental for THIS team in THIS season is, to invoke the third animal in this post, a dumbass idea.

o. Stupid idea. Why get Maddux for the sake of throwing Correia into the bullpen? He’s a good starter. He should stay in the rotation. We have nothing to gain by doing this. He won’t get us any good draft picks when he becomes a FA again, he won’t help at a playoff push because we’re not going to the playoffs, and we’d have to give up some talent to get him. Rebuilding teams aren’t supposed to give up their talent. That talent is what makes them good again. We can’t assume Schierholtz will do good at the major league level, so we shouldn’t be giving up any outfielders. Not that we have any to give up, anyways.
by boonitez on Jun 29, 2008 8:53 PM PDT 0 recs
You say you want to trade Yabu away because he’s not part of our future, yet you want to trade for Maddux?
by Natto on Jun 29, 2008 9:37 PM PDT 0 recs
Lost in ALL this madness...
is the notion that you’ve subtracted Ray Durham (the team leader in OBP), and Randy Winn (2nd in OBP, 3rd in OPS) from the lineup, replacing them with Jose Castillo/Rich Aurilia full time, and Nate Schierholtz.
And in the shuffle of “trading people because they aren’t apart of the future,” Dave Roberts looks like he’s still there to pirate playing time away from Lewis and Schierholtz (as is Ortmeier and Horwitz), thus further watering down the offense that you expect to keep the Giants in “the chase.”
Greg Maddux will not make this fact better.
by ExcuseMeSwing on Jun 29, 2008 10:05 PM PDT 0 recs
not to mention
trading those said people hurts our already sad offense and getting maddux (over Correia in the rotation) is probably an upgrade, but not enough to be an overall improvement to the team.
getting madux is the equivalent of having a painful broken leg and trying to stop the pain by breaking your finger.

Maddux isnt going anywhere
I live in SD and watch plenty of Pads games. Maddux isn’t what he once was. He is a good guy to have on the team but at this point he is semi-retired. Nothing more than a solid 4-5 starter who probably knows more about baseball than any pitching coach in the league. While I would like to have him around to help out the kids its just never going to happen. He only signed with SD because of location. If they didn’t make an offer he was going to retire. I don’t remember but I don’t think the Dodgs even made an offer.
Bring me the head of Barry Zito!

If Maddux goes anywhere it’s to the Braves for his last hurrah with Glavine and Smoltz. He’s said he won’t go back to the Cubs, and they’re a legit contender in need of pitching; there is no way in hell he’ll approve a trade to the Giants for a half year. None.
(On a side note, Maddux has actually been one of the Padres more durable pitchers, leading the team in innings pitched and sporting the best ERA and ERA+. Course, a lot of this has to do with the home ballpark, and I’m not sure he can post these numbers all year, but he’s not as washed up as many think.)

Hmmm...
GRM does say some stupid things. And although I disagree with it, his idea of getting Maddux isn’t as bad as some of his others.
What gets me though is that this is what was suggested:
1) Trade OF prospects for Maddux. Which OF prospects? “Any that aren’t part of our future.” So phantom, random OF prospects that you can’t name? Except for the good ones? And Whale’s Vagina is going to take them and give up Maddux? And Maddux will waive his no-trade clause to come here to a 35-46 team that is 6 games out, but not to another team that can legitimately claim to be a contender?
2) “Sell” Durham and Winn. Not for anything in particular – just sell them. For some other team’s OF prospects that aren’t in their future plans? Also, don’t sell Aurilia – just Durham and Winn. You can’t sell Aurilia, because he needs to play 3B so that RallyKiller can play 2B, even though his defense sucks there. OK. And keep Dave Roberts to be an integral part of the bench. Supposedly, this is to build for the future – and to contend this year! See, Aurilia, Roberts, and Castillo are there to build for t
