Lack of execution

As a Giants fan, I rarely watch any A's baseball or American League baseball for that matter, the only time I watch American League baseball is on FOX during the postseason, if I am intrigued enough by the Sunday Night Baseball matchup on ESPN, or when the A's play the Giants at the Oakland Collesium.  That being said, I don't know much about the strategy that is played in the American League in terms of sacrifice bunting, hitting and running, and stealing, that whole moving the runners type of deal. I've absolutely seen "small ball" played by numerous American League teams, most especially by the Angels with Mike Scocia at the managing helm, and more recently at AT&T Park this season when the Giants were swept by the Chicago White Sox in mid May.  However, tonight's ballgame was a distinct example of the lack of execution in the American League due to Oakland's Bobby Crosby's inability to lay down a sacrifice bunt with Kurt Suzuki at second base and nobody out. The following hitter, Carlos Gomez drove a deep flyball that landed in the mitt of right fielder Randy Winn, which would have scored Suzuki, if Crosby had executed the bunt. The point I'm getting at is that how many hitters in the American League are asked to lay down a sacrifice bunt? I know they are major league hitters and bunting should be apart of their repitoire, but Bobby Crosby looked terrible attempting to sacrifice Suzuki to third base. I guess I just prefer the low scoring, scratch out one run, 1-0, 2-1 types of games. Go Giants! Go Sanchez.

Lack of execution?

Hit balls hard and on a line and you’ll start scoring more runs.

You score more with a runner on 2nd and no outs than a runner on third with one out.

The Aim of the Game is: DON’T MAKE OUTS.

regardless, i’m against capital punishment.

Also, Boston Redsox: 38 Sacrifice Hits last year. LAA: 30; CHIWS: 31.
weiiiiiird.

Fail

The aim of the game is trade outs for runs intelligently within the context of the game state.

With two baserunners as slow as Suzuki and Cust you may not get any runs at all if you leave them where they were on second and first.

Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.

Wrong

It doesn’t matter if you have Suzuki, Cust, Molina, or JT Snow with a backpack full of bricks. HRs will score them. Doubles will score them. And yes, sometimes, singles will score them from second base.

There are times where you play for one run because that’s what you need, but at that point, Dave Roberts or Rajai Davis would pinch run anyway.

I agree

But the best (“most intelligent”) ratio is X runs / 0 outs. i.e, don’t make outs.

SUPERFAIL

the only time when you “intelligently”[sic] trade outs for runs is when the batter is a proven poor hitter, as in a pitcher who bats under like .177.

taking away outs is just giving .300 batters less chances to move them over.

3 chances at 30% success > 2 chances at 35% (taking into account sac flies)

early in the game i agree. late in the a 1 run game, you want to score at the highest probability. yes you will score more runs in the long if you dont sacrafice (i.e. better shot at a 3-4 run inning), but you will score less often if you dont. thats why its called situational hitting

It's okay

Some people don’t understand the difference between in general and specifically.

In general, you will score more runs w/ a runner on 2nd and no outs than with a runner on 3rd with 1 out.

Specifically, you have to realize the game state – something the statisticians can’t quite figure out.

However, I kinda think Crosby bunting there was retarded.

Besides

That botched bunt was just the baseball gods making up for Cust’s bullshit hit.

Actually

Statisticians are excellent at figuring out game state, creating complex tables of specific inning/out/score/baserunner situations is a perfect example of applied baseball statistics. It’s just that the overwhelming majority of us aren’t statisticians.
