Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

minor lines, 6/28/08

AAA: Fresno lost to Las Vegas 7-4

Fresno: CF Clay Timpner: 2 for 4, HR, SO, SB
Fresno: SS Ivan Ochoa: 3 for 5, SB, E
Las Vegas: 1B John Lindsey: 3 for 5, 2 HR, GiDP

Fresno: LHP Pat Misch: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K--1 HR, 2 HB, 1 BK
Las Vegas: RHP Jason Schmidt: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K--1 HB

Ochoa's three singles paced the Grizzlies' eleven-hit attack and raised his team-leading AVG to .316.  He had his 18th SB but also committed his 13th E.  Timpner connected for his 2nd HR to lead off the 9th inning.  The Dodgers' 31-year-old Lindsey connected for his 16th and 17th HR of the years.

Misch has effectively made seven starts now for Fresno, and his last two have been his shortest two.  His PCL ERA rose above 5.00.  After four rehab appearances in the Cal League, the last of which was May 31st, the ex-Giant Schmidt made his first appearance with Las Vegas, throwing 45 pitches (24 strikes).

AA: Connecticut lost to Binghamton 5-4

Connecticut: RF Ben Copeland: 2 for 4, 2B
Connecticut: C Pablo Sandoval: 2 for 4, 2B
Binghamton: CF Fernando Martinez: 1 for 3, HR, BB, SO, GiDP

Connecticut: LHP Ben Snyder: 3.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--1 HR,1 HB
Connecticut: RHP Josh Sharpless: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K--1 WP
Binghamton: RHP Eddie Kunz: 1.0 IP, 3 K

With two hits each, Copeland and Sandoval accounted for four of the Defenders' five hits.  The 19-year-old Martinez, the Mets' top prospect, connected for his 4th HR.

Snyder, the Cal League ERA leader, was roughed up for 5 ER in his upper minors debut.  Sharpless threw two scoreless innings in his first appearance in a week.  Kunz, a supplemental first rounder for the Mets a year ago, struck out all three batters he faced in the 9th inning for his 21st save.  That improved his K/BB to an unimpressive 1.50.

A+: San Jose lost to Modesto 7-4
(allowing five runs in the 8th inning)

San Jose: LF Bobby Felmy: 2 for 2, 3B, 2 BB, HBP, CS
San Jose: CF Mike McBryde: 3 for 3, HBP

San Jose: LHP Jesse English: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K--1 HB
San Jose: RHP Craig Whitaker: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
San Jose: RHP Danny Otero: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K

Felmy and McBryde combined to reach base safely in all nine trips to the plate. improving upon the .329 and .357 OBPs with which they entered the night.

Allowing just 1 ER, English shaved a few more points off his ERA, lowering it to 2.40.  Whitaker's ERA ballooned to 5.70, with three of the four runs charged to his record scoring after he left the game as Otero allowed a 3-RBI triple and then an RBI single to the first two batters he faced.

A-: Augusta defeated Hickory 6-3 (7 innings) in game 1

Augusta: CF Shane Jordan: 2 for 2, BB, SF, SB
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 1 for 4, HR, E
Augusta: SS Charlie Culberson: 2 for 3, SH, 2 E

Augusta: LHP Madison Bumgarner: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K--1 HR

Batting leadoff, Jordan reached base in three of four trips to the plate.  Culberson was one of four other GreenJackets with two hits, but he also committed his 27th and 28th errors.  Villalaona connected for his 10th HR, the GreenJackets' only XBH in the first game of the doubleheader.

Bumganrer had perhaps his least effective start in over two months, although only one of the runs he allowed was earned.  After 10 K in each of his previous two starts, he had just 2 K in this start.  He got most of his outs via the flyball with a 2/10 GO/FO line.  His GO/AO ratio for the season is 0.90.  The 3 BB is also noteworthy in that he had not issued more than one walk in any of his past eight starts and in that he had issued just two walks over his past five starts combined.

A-: Augusta defeated Hickory 9-1 (7 innings) in game 2

Augusta: 2B Nick Noonan: 2 for 5, 3B
Augsuta: SS Charlier Culberson: 2 for 4

Augusta: LHP Craig Clark: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Noonan and Culberson, the two teenage middle infielders for the GreenJackets, were two of the three GreenJackets with two hits each, raising their respective AVGs to .302 and .232.  Noonan had his 7th triple.

Clark had one of his better starts of the year, including a 9/3 GO/FO line.  He improved his ERA to an even 4.00.

ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Everett 9-4

Salem-Keizer: LF Casey Bond: 3 for 5, 3B, SO

Salem-Keizer: RHP Gib Hobson: 3.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Salem-Keizer: RHP Kelvin Marte: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K

Bond, who managed a .709 OPS last summer in the AZL, had his second multi-game of the year, improving his AVG to .234 through 47 AB.

Hobson, who had allowed just 1 ER through his first two starts, was roughed up for 5 ER in his third start.  An 11th round pick two years ago, he missed all of last season with an injury.  The 20-year-old Marte, who had dominant stats last summer in the DSL, was the only one of five Volcanoes pitchers not to allow an earned run.  Making his fourth appearance, he doubled his strikeout total.

R: Giants defeated A's 13-0

Scottsdale: SS Ehire Adrianza: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, BB

Scottsdale: RHP Jose Casilla: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K--1 WP
Scottsdale: RHP Trey Webb: 2.0 IP, 1 BB, 4 K

The 18-year-old Adrianza, who slugged just .325 last summer in the DSL, connected for his 1st HR and 3rd double in six games this year.

The 19-year-old Casilla, who had a 3.76 ERA in nearly 70 IP last summer in the DSL, has now pitched very well in both starts this season.  Making his third pitching appearance, Webb had 4 K to double his strikeout total.

DSL: Giants lost to Yankees #1 9-4

Dominican: 2B Julio Izturis: 1 for 3, BB, GiDP
Dominican: LHP Diego De La Cruz: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K--2 HR

The 18-year-old Izturis was one of two Giants to reach base twice.  Not afraid to take a walk, he has the unusual line of .231/.464/.256.  The 19-year-old De La Cruz has a very nice 15/1 K/BB line over his last two starts, but 4 ER today raised his ERA to 3.80 through five starts.

Who the hell is Jason Schmidt???

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Never heard of him.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

Man, Culberson’s actually been hitting lately. That’s a good sign.

Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.

He’s been hitting for like a month straight.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 29, 2008 2:34 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s why his BA is all the way up to .230 and his OPS is in danger of cracking .600!

Actually it just seems like he’s hitting because he tends to get multiple hits in his hit games, he’s still adding in a lot of 0 fers. Consequently, though he’s gotten multiple hits 4 times in his last 10 games, overall he’s still only hitting ;280 in that stretch (he’s also slugging .280 in that sretch with an OBP of I believe .303 if my math is correct.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

It’s all relative. Considering his wretched April line of .104/.155/.179, his last two months have been pretty good.

May – .286/.369/.375
June – .313/.324/ .403

Was at the Grizzly game

Those HR’s hit by Lindsay were BOMBS.

Misch was hardly stellar. In the 1st he had 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, then proceeded to walk Jason Schmidt and balk in a run. And then give up two more hits to score runs.

Ochoa got doubled off of first on a fly ball to the warning track which cost Fresno a run. How the hell do you get doubled off of first on a fly ball to the warning track?

Anyway, don’t know if I wanna go to any more games involving the 51’s. Half the crowd are pissant Dodger fans.

Misch balked in a run?

I’m starting to think something is wrong in his head.

Only 891 games until the end of Zito's contract
