OT: iPhone or PS3?
In my case, here are the pros and cons:
iPhone (the new one out 7/11):
Pros- Upgrades me from crappy, prehistoric Sony Ericsson. Aside from all the wonderful gimmicky features, the syncing capability of things like iCalendar, plus the internet anywhere aspect, would make it useful at home and work, plus I don't have an mp3 player at the moment.
Cons- All those gimmicky features could be a mighty big distraction, both at home and work, plus it will cost a lot each month to give me those features. Apple products are big on planned obsolence, so do I really want to board this merry-go-round? On the other hand, I'm a devoted Mac user. Hmmm
PS3:
Pros- Allows me to play the game that I love- Rock Band, which gives me a physical and mental workout, unlike most video games. Also, is good as a longterm investment because of it being the most economical BluRay player on the market. While it is more expensive than the iPhone upfront, it does not come with monthly fees.
Cons- I'm not really into video games in general, so this really would be almost entirely about Rock Band and BluRay. No work benefits (other than maybe helping me blow off steam). Doesn't help my Luddite phone/mp3 situation. Also, I don't have an HD TV, so BluRay benefits would come with the added expense of needing a new TV.

iPhone for me, because I’m with AT&T anyway and I still get my business discount from when I worked for a large soulless multi-national corporation. And I have a Wii that satisfies all my gaming needs.

I’m also with AT&T anyway, so add that to the pro column on the iPhone.
Wii is pretty cool (I love the bowling game), but without BluRay, it doesn’t fully do it for me.

I’m likely to be po’folks for the long run, probably for the rest of my life, so no HD TVs for me. Blu Ray therefore doesn’t mean much to me.

For me, an HD DVD is going to be a special credit card gift when I move out. Somehow I don’t care that I won’t be able to afford it….

Also, you could watch the soon to be released Batman: Gotham Knight “mini-series” on Blu-Ray. I made my pre-order already, but it was for regular DVD since my girlfriend owns the PS3 and I only ever see it on weekends for the time being.

Neither?
Rock Band is going to be released for Wii if you have a Wii already, and the iphone is still more expensive what with the recurring costs. PS3’s not going to be worth it unless you already have a nice TV already, and you’re planning on building a nice Blu-Ray library. Xbox 360 has a better game library if games is what you’re looking for.
(disclaimer: I own Apple and AT&T stock, and I own a PS3 and an Xbox 360.)

bough the PS3 for same reasons
BluRay + Rock Band…movies in HD are compeletely worth it, and Rock Band’s DLC constantly keeps the game fresh. That being said, Guitar Hero 4’s “full band” setup is supposed to rival/surpass Rock Band…i doubt you’ll want 2 sets of peripherals littering your living room if it turns out GH4 is the new, must own game.
To play devil’s advocate one last time:
As hometownboy started to say though, factor into the costs what it will take to rebuild a BluRay library.
Initial costs aside, the iPhone’s going to cost around $80/month in fees, that’s about $25/month more than my phone rate (thru AT&T) right now. That’s an extra $300/year over what I pay now.
That’s about 10 BluRay movies per year. Or, more realistically for your first year, Rock band and 5 BluRay movies.
And I’m not a big video game player either, but I still get probably the popular game of the year…so that’s another 50-60 bucks.

I’m totally on board with the GH4 for the Wii. It looks so amazing.

Rate Plans
Voice —I think you can pick the plan: I have a 700 anytime minute family plan for 2 phones that’s $60 month (Unlimited nights, etc.)
Date -- $30 per month per phone (internet at 3G data rate, plus e-mail)—this is $10 more than the 2G iPhone.
One thing that I haven’t heard is how the SMS msgs. (Text msgs) will be treated. —I hope they are counted in the Data expense and they don’t charge for a separate “Family Msg. Unlimited” package, or some other way to squeeze me.
Pretty expensive, but it’s the same as what I pay with a full Blackberry data plan today.
The really money starts when you start buying the Apps from Apple :-)

I don't plan on buying BluRay discs though
At least, not until my FastDVDCopy program catches up to that technology (I like to backup my movies). I tend to rent from Netflix. I still need to find out if the PS3 can play my backup DVDs.

PS3
There will be a new iphone every 6 months with new features, but they only make a new play station console every 4-6 years. The I Phone’s price will continue to go down but the PS3 will be the same for a while. Plus you could buy a used PS3 for the same price as an I Phone

Don’t be one of those douches that has an iPhone and wants everyone to know it. Those kinda people are lame beyond all belief. At least with the PS3 you can hide in your man-cave and never come outside in the daylight. Also, sitting shirtless on your couch with a bag full of cheezy-poofs in your hand isn’t a conducive iPhone environment. It does work well with a PS3 though.

I don’t have a hair trigger on this one. I have a problem with the dolts that hold their shiny new phone high up in the air for all to see. Nothing says pompous like some jackass showing off their soon to be outdated $400 phone. Look at any line of idiots in the queue, waiting to get theirs. They aren’t there for any reason other than to be able to say they have one, and other people don’t. Kinda lame if you ask me.

I'm biased, but...iPhone
Reasons why:
1. What’s the point of Blu-Ray without a high-def TV? It’s like buying a Porsche in a country with a 35 MPH freeway.
2. The price of a PS3 along with a good High-def TV will be about the same as the cost of the iPhone including two years of plan.
3. Yes, the iPhone will have new models, but you’ll get the new model right away. We’re halfway into the life cycle of the PS3, and by the time you probably save enough to get the High-def TV to enjoy it, the PS4 will probably be close to coming out.
4. If any part of your reasoning is because you hate the rich, high-profile and egotistical CEO of the company, don’t buy anything, because they all have them. At least the iPhone’s CEO is American.
5. If any part of your reasoning is because you hate idiots who have some one to show off that they have it, well, there goes getting just about anything in the world. The only difference with a PS3 and an iPhone in that regard are people (usually) don’t carry the PS3 around. But those who wish they could just use a PSP as a surrogate as the shiny tool they always show off. (Nintendo DS’s are the same way.)
6. $4.99 for the new MLB iPhone app, which for the rest of the season, will let you get instant replays of big plays in a game, just after they happen. Great if you love baseball, but can’t watch games all the time, and don’t want to sift through a Comcast replay for a few plays. No subscription fees for that (though it appears you’ll need to pay again if you want it next year).
7. In all seriousness, you put it bluntly. You don’t care much for video games. You need a new phone. And the main ‘other’ thing that attracts you to the PS3 is something you won’t be able to enjoy. Stop listening to what other people would enjoy themselves the most if they were spending your money, and get what’s more practical for you.

Uh, color me wrong here, but isn’t Sony shooting for a minimum 10 year life cycle for the PS3? And it’s only been out what, two years or so here in the states? Also, an HD TV can be had for around $1,000, expect this to also drop in price around Christmas and into next year. That sounds fairly affordable if you ask me.
If any part of your reasoning is because you hate idiots who have some one to show off that they have it, well, there goes getting just about anything in the world.
In the interest of full disclosure, shouldn’t you state here that you’re an iPhone owner as well? Of course you’re going to convince the guy to ignore the “look at me” idiots out there….because you’re one of them!

PS3
I have a very basic phone. How basic, you ask? So basic, it came free with the plan. I have no interest in upgrading it either, because it does all the things I need it to:
1. I can make outgoing phone calls on it.
2. I can receive inbound calls
3. I can text message my wife
4. It’s a company phone, so I don’t pay a dime.
The iPhone is kind of neat, my brother in law has one. I’ve used it to pull up a couple videos on YouTube. Hooray! In the past, I’d used a Treo 650, and it synchronized my email very nicely via Goodlink. Later, I ditched the Treo and got a Samsung Blackjack. It was cool. Once I learned the interface, it worked beautifully. And I was able to see my Outlook calendar, contacts, and email in real time. I’ve recently worked a little bit with Blackberrys, and they’re practically the same damn thing as the Treo. So as a corporate drone, I’d rather stick with the goodlink or Blackberry service. It’s far more business friendly than the iPhone will ever be.
I’d love to get the PS3, and that’s the option I chose… But to be perfectly honest, I don’t have a need for one. So I think I’d choose option C: Put the money in my 401K.

How’s that the case? From everything I’ve heard, the iPhone is the most unfriendly corporate phone/pda out there. Blackberry and Treo pretty much have that market cornered, don’t they?

You might be right…I’d just look into it closely, because I know a guy in our office who can’t get his to sync with our system at all. If I remember correctly, he has to route everything through gmail and then it’ll work….but to go directly from our office server to his iPhone is a no-go.

Yes, if...
There are two ways to sync remotely:
1. If your work uses Microsoft Exchange, it will work natively with that.
2. There is MobileMe, which is a service Apple provides for $99 a year (you get a discount $30 for the first year if bought with the phone.) That will do push syncing with your computer (Mac or PC), and also will push-sync all your computers, Mac or PC, with regards to contacts, calendars, etc.
FWIW, the iPhone does currently sync with Outlook as is, just not remotely.

Not sure if you have made your choice yet however if you have not there are rumors Microsoft will be announcing a price cut for the xbox 360 at e3 (the biggest video came conference of the year) mid July. It will most likely be 50 bucks putting them at 299.
If they do Sony is expected to match it putting the PS3 at 349 for the 40mb version.
