minor lines, 6/27/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Las Vegas 5-4
Fresno: 3B Scott McClain: 2 for 3, 2B, BB
Fresno: PH Brett Harper: 1 for 1, HR
Fresno: RHP Victor Santos: 5.0+ IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 K--2 HR
Fresno: LHP Erick Threets: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K
McClain, one of three Grizzlies with two hits each, reached base three times. He continues to swing a hot bat in June, hitting .333/.410/.517 in 87 AB this month. Harper's pinch-hit, solo HR in the 7th inning was his 6th HR of the month.
Santos allowed 5 ER for the second consecutive start, pushing his ERA back above 4.00. Four of the five runs were in the 6th inning, with the final batter he faced connecting for a three-run HR. Threets was one of four Grizzlies relievers to pitch a scoreless inning while allowing one hit.
AA: Connecticut defeated Binghamton 4-2
Connecticut: C Pablo Sandoval: 2 for 3, BB, SO
Connecticut: SS Jake Wald: 2 for 3, 2 2B
Binghamton: CF Fernando Martinez: 3 for 5
Connecticut: RHP Dave McKae: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K--1 WP
Connecticut: RHP Brooks McNiven: 3.0 IP, 1 BB
Connecticut: RHP Osiris Matos: 0.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Connecticut: RHP Kelvin Pichardo: 0.2 IP, 1 K
Binghamton: LHP Jon Niese: 9.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--1 WP
Sandoval and Wald each had two of the Defenders' seven hits. After an 0 for 8 start in the upper minors, Sandoval got his first hits there. For Wald, the two doubles were his only XBHs in his last ten games. Martinez, the Mets' top prospect, had three hits in his first game for the double-A Mets in a month and a half as he returned from an injury.
McKae, who has returned to the rotation after four relief appearances, had an effective start. After an ERA close to 7.00 in May, his ERA for June is below 2.00. McNiven's three scoreless innings brought his Eastern League ERA below 2.00. Matos allowed his first run in exactly a month, and Pichardo kept the damage to just one run as he stranded all three runners bequeathed by Matos and earned his 3rd save. Niese, who has become the Mets' top pitching prospect, had perhaps his least effective start of the year against the Defenders but still pitched a complete game, which is all the more notable since he did not have more than 6.0 IP in any of his previous nine starts. In three starts in Norwich in May, he allowed just 2 ER against the Defenders. Last night he allowed 4 ER in the first four innings but then finished with five scoreless frames in which he faced the minimum fifteen batters as he induced three GiDPs.
A+: San Jose defeated Modesto 6-2
San Jose: 2B Brock Bond: 3 for 5
San Jose: C Jackson Williams: 2 for 3, 2 BB
San Jose: RHP Kevin Pucetas: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K--1 WP
San Jose: RHP Mike Musgrave: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K
In his Cal League debut, Williams, the Giants' second of three supplemental first rounders a year ago, reached base four times. He was promoted after a .179/.275/.263 line in 156 AB for Augusta. Bond, in his second Cal League game after being promoted from Augusta, paced the Giants offense with three hits, accounting for a quarter of the Giants' dozen hits, which were all singles.
Pucetas was fairly effective in four innings in his second start since coming off the DL. It was also just a couple days removed from pitching an inning in the all-star game. Musgrave has been dominant in seven June appearances, with a solo HR the only real blemish on his record in 17.1 IP (0.52 ERA).
A-: Augusta at Hickory was postponed by rain
(A makeup doubleheader is scheduled for today.)
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Everett 6-5
(with each team scoring a run in the 9th inning)
Salem-Keizer: CF Caley Curry: 3 for 5, SO, E
Salem-Keizer: RHP Wilbur Bucardo: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Curry, the Giants' 14th rounder this year, had three of the Volcanoes' nine hits to raise his AVG to .311.
After allowing just 1 ER in his first two starts, the 20-year-old Bucardo allowed 3 ER in his third start. He has gone exactly five innings in all three starts, while allowing 14 H and 2 BB. He has just 7 K but a 2.70 GO/AO ratio. FWIW, he has no strikeouts yet against a left-handed batter in 16 AB.
R: Giants defeated Rangers 8-4
Scottsdale: 2B Wladimir Frias: 3 for 4, CS
Scottsdale: LF Taylor Creswell: 2 for 4, HBP, SO
Scottsdale: RHP Kyle Nicholson: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K--1 HB, 1 WP
Scottsdale: LHP Nathan Pendley: 2.0 IP, 3 BB, 1 K--1 BK
Scottsdale: RHP Chris Wilson: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K
In his fourth pro game, Frias, the 30th round pick this year, had three of the Giants' eleven hits, raising his AVG to .375. Creswell, the 22nd rounder back in 2005, also reached base three times. From the 2005 draft, a draft in which the Giants did not pick until the fourth round, the Giants have had two players reach the major leagues--Hinshaw and Romo.
Nicholson, the Giants' 7th rounder a year ago, finally made his pro debut. Pendley, who has struggled since having Tommy John surgery in 2005, made his second appearance of the year. Wilson, the 38th rounder earlier this month, pitched three scoreless inning to be credited with the win.
DSL: Giants defeated Cubs #2 7-2
Dominican: DH Sundrendy Windster: 2 for 4, HR, SO
Dominican: RHP Argenis Sanchez: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K--1 HB
The 19-year-old Windster was the only Giant with multiple hits, including his 1st HR. The 18-year-old Sanchez has gone at least five innings in each of the first five starts of his pro career, through which he has a 2.77 ERA.

ay, el Pablito
Finally.
Me, I’m waiting to see if Edlefsen can get ground balls in double A, too. Or get back to his NWL glories of 3.5+ G/F.

Nice to see Jackson Williams with a nice game, at a higher level to boot.

Now see Pablito did just fine. He’ll be okay.
And wow I’m surprised to see Brock Bond moving up so quickly. As for Jackson Williams, I still don’t like that pick and I don’t know why he was promoted.

For what it’s worth, he seems to have good on base skills.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

I agree—where else do people get rewarded for failing? Besides show business, I mean.

Yours is a good point
I hope he responds to the promotion with a fire under his ass, but I don’t see it coming.

Did somebody say something about his swing being changed? I don’t know what happened, and the sample is small, but something happened:
April: .121/.150/.207 (.357 OPS in 58 AB, .154 BABIP)
May: .150/.246/.167 (.413 OPS in 60 AB, .191 BABIP)
June: .333/.480/.513 (.993 OPS in 39 AB, .375 BABIP)

It looks like his strikeouts and walks are trending right each month too:
BB:K
April – 1:17
May – 7:13
June 7:6
However, Minor League Splits has him with 3 line drives this month. That’s 3 out of 33 batted balls, or about 9%. His BABIP would seem very fluky for the month. But he’s walking more and striking out less, so that’s good.

His Swing
His swing was changed in Spring Training. He’s been struggling with the change early, but he’s obviously found a comfort zone with it.

I wasn’t a fan of the Williams pick, but I think he has a chance to be a #2 catcher in the Bigs one day. With his decent on base skills, if he can just hit for a little pop, and hit like .250 at best I’d take that for a backup catcher with his defensive skills.
I’m curious to see though what happens with Sandoval. If he keeps improving on his skills behind the plate (he’s already good at throwing guys out) and if he stays in shape if maybe Posey might be moved back to SS. SS is probably the weakest of all the positions for the Giants. Posey was a plus defender at SS, and was a Frosh All-American. I’m sure he’ll stay at C for the time being, but his versatility could be a good thing if Pablo can stick at C.

Posey is sticking at C unless he’s unable to, and I don’t think that’s a problem. Most of his value lies in the fact that he’s a great catcher.

No doubt. If you have two plus catchers, then just trade one.
